During the past 40 years, the United States has experienced several strategic material shortages prompted by crises such as World War II and the Korean War. Historically, the issue of a critical materials policy by the United States was not addressed until shortages of materials hindered the manufacturing capabilities of industry. The latency of evoked response waveforms has become an important clinical parameter. Latency is defined as the time between stimulus onset and a specific peak of the evoked response waveform. The latency of the visual evoked response (VER) waveform is a measure of neural conduction time in diagnosing multiple sclerosis (Regan, 1979). Slowed conduction shown by abnormally increasedpeak latencies in different sensory evoked responses can also help locate tumors and other structural lesions of the nervous system, areas of ischemia, and infarction (Grundy, 1983). Computers are becoming an integral part of routine clinical medicine. Recently, with the advent of the microcomputer, it has become possible to move this new technology into the operating room and, therefore, into the anesthesiologist's domain.Anesthesiology is a very dynamic field: some research in this field is making the practice of anesthesia a more precise science.
