Roles For Maine’S Physicians In The Climate Crisis, Gail Carlson, Megan Andersen May 2024

Roles For Maine’S Physicians In The Climate Crisis, Gail Carlson, Megan Andersen

Maine Policy Review

Physicians have important roles to play in the climate crisis because they deal with the health impacts of climate change. We surveyed physicians in Maine about climate change and health, and of the 108 respondents, 84 (78 percent) believe that climate change poses a threat to the health of their patients, particularly for asthma, vector-borne diseases, heat-related illnesses, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and mental health problems. Most reported that these conditions are becoming more prevalent, and they identified children, older adults, and patients with chronic health conditions as those most at risk. Despite this awareness, most respondents did not discuss …

The Trouble With ‘Delivering Feedback’: Reflections Of A Supervision Scholar, Helen M. Hazi May 2024

The Trouble With ‘Delivering Feedback’: Reflections Of A Supervision Scholar, Helen M. Hazi

Journal of Educational Supervision

As a scholar of supervision and after years of teaching principals, I have begun to rethink what it means for principals to deliver feedback to improve teachers’ instruction. I realized that I held many troubling assumptions. In this essay, I describe the contexts within which my assumptions had taken root, then use selected literature to look more closely at each. In the final section, I address the question: What do principals do if they no longer deliver feedback? This inquiry helped me understand that commonly held assumptions about “delivering feedback” promote an oversimplified view of teaching and its improvement, keep …

Characteristics And Motivations Of Passengers On Board A Puffin Tour Boat In Maine, Skye Howard

Honors College

The Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) is a visually attractive seabird found in the North Atlantic Ocean. While research in the Eastern North Atlantic indicates that Puffins attract visitors to areas where the species can be viewed, less is known about visitor interest in Atlantic puffins in the Western North Atlantic. This study helps fill a gap in the literature regarding visitor interest in Atlantic puffins in the Western North Atlantic. The purpose of this study is to provide an understanding of the characteristics of passengers on board a puffin tour boat visiting Petit Manan Island, Maine, and the importance of …

Using The Tarot To Heal: A Study Of The Use Of Tarot In Therapeutic Settings And The Creation Of A Major Arcana, Venae Demarte May 2024

Using The Tarot To Heal: A Study Of The Use Of Tarot In Therapeutic Settings And The Creation Of A Major Arcana, Venae Demarte

Honors College

The purpose of this project is to determine whether the use of Tarot has merit in clinical use of mindfulness techniques. Both mindfulness and Tarot alike have been used to help those who struggle with their mental health (Nehra, et al., 2013; Semetsky, 2010). This study aims to combine these two notions by researching the use of Tarot readings as a mindfulness technique.

With Tarot already being used as a healing method to those who are open to its use, it makes sense to bring Tarot into a more empirical light, rather than limit its use to those who are …

Creating Interpretable Deep Learning Models To Identify Species Using Environmental Dna Sequences, Samuel Waggoner May 2024

Creating Interpretable Deep Learning Models To Identify Species Using Environmental Dna Sequences, Samuel Waggoner

Honors College

This research aims to develop an interpretable and fast machine learning (ML) model for identifying species using environmental DNA (eDNA). eDNA is a technique used to detect the presence or absence of species in an ecosystem by analyzing the DNA that animals naturally leave behind in water or soil. However, there can be millions of sequences to classify and the reference databases are sizeable, so traditional methods such as BLAST are slow. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been shown to be 150 times faster at classifying sequences. In this work, we create a CNN that achieves 92.5% accuracy, surpassing the …

Effects Of Ecologically Relevant Concentrations Of Nitrate On Behavior In Betta Splendens, Sarah Janson May 2024

Effects Of Ecologically Relevant Concentrations Of Nitrate On Behavior In Betta Splendens, Sarah Janson

Honors College

Nitrate is a ubiquitous pollutant that is becoming more prevalent in both fresh and saltwater environments. Short term effects are often studied, but an organism’s response to stress can change due to whatever the stressor is. In order to research this, a study was run using environmentally relevant nitrate treatments (0 mg/L, 10 mg/L NO3-N, and 100 mg/L NO3-N) to see the effect of nitrate on scototaxis behaviors, a measure of anxiety. This study used Betta splendens because they are easy to rear and have very well documented behaviors. In addition to the scototaxis, the effect of temperature on mortality …

Winging It Through Unprecedented Times: A Study Of Avian Admissions To Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers In The Eastern United States Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic, Thea Tengstrom May 2024

Winging It Through Unprecedented Times: A Study Of Avian Admissions To Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers In The Eastern United States Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic, Thea Tengstrom

Honors College

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has brought new research that examines the many ways in which humans impact wildlife. Wildlife rehabilitation is a tool that attempts to mitigate some negative effects of anthropogenic activity (domestic cats, window strikes), through specialized care to aid injured and orphaned animals. This study sought to investigate if the ‘Anthropause’, which saw a massive change in human behavior, demonstrated an influence on wild bird admissions to wildlife rehabilitation centers. Twelve centers were selected including both urban and non-urban centers throughout the eastern United States. Bird admission data between 2018 and 2021 were …

Ghost Connect-Net: A Connectivity-Based Companion Network To Enhance Pruning Methods, Mary Isabelle Wisell May 2024

Ghost Connect-Net: A Connectivity-Based Companion Network To Enhance Pruning Methods, Mary Isabelle Wisell

Honors College

Deep neural network (DNN) approaches excel in various real-world applications like robotics and computer vision, yet their computational demands and memory requirements hinder usability on advanced devices. Also, larger models heighten overparameterization risks, making networks more vulnerable to input disturbances. Recent studies aim to boost DNN efficiency by trimming redundant neurons or filters based on task relevance. Instead of introducing a new pruning method, this project aims to enhance existing techniques by introducing a companion network, Ghost Connect-Net (GC-Net), to monitor the connections in the original network. The initial weights of GC- Net are equal to the connectivity measurements of …

Determining The Viability Of Marine Sensor Construction, Roman Sequeira May 2024

Determining The Viability Of Marine Sensor Construction, Roman Sequeira

Honors College

I intend to determine the viability of building a sensor that can be deployed in marine environments. Viability is defined as a summary of economic affordability, practicality of construction and deployment, knowledge required, and effectiveness. In order to get the best results, our sensor must be able to be modified to suit individual circumstances, constructed out of easy to obtain materials, be robust enough to withstand less than lab grade environments, and most importantly function well enough to be worth the effort of building it. I have built a sensor using the cheapest and most widely available options available. It …

Sexuality Education In Central Maine High Schools: What's Happening Now And What's Changed In Two Decades?, Morgan Inman

Honors College

This qualitative study aimed to examine sex education in Central Maine high schools. Through interviews with seven teachers who are directly involved in instruction, this study sought to understand the current state of sex education in those schools. Interviews with teachers explored their background and experience, as well as their goals, the topics they cover, and any other sexuality-related programs or services available in their schools. Findings from these teacher interviews were compared to those of a similar study conducted over two decades earlier to look for trends and changes across time. Finding revealed that teachers share many of the …

The Impact Of Prejudice On Women's Wellbeing: A Moderated-Mediation Rejection Identification Model On Feminist Identity, Liana Shaw May 2024

The Impact Of Prejudice On Women's Wellbeing: A Moderated-Mediation Rejection Identification Model On Feminist Identity, Liana Shaw

Honors College

The study’s purpose was to assess sexism’s impact on women’s wellbeing based on the Rejection-Identification Model (Branscombe et al., 1999), in which perceived prejudice increases group identification, which in turn buffers the negative consequences of prejudice on wellbeing. Surveys were administered via Qualtrics. Using PROCESS analyses in SPSS, Study 1 (n = 1,083) investigated whether or not these relationships between prejudice, group identification, and wellbeing were moderated by feminist identity (Model 59; Hayes, 2018). Results showed that while women higher in feminist identity do experience greater depression in response to perceived prejudice, they also have a significantly stronger relationship between …

Decadent Gothic: The Horrors Of An Urban World, Kyle Willis May 2024

Decadent Gothic: The Horrors Of An Urban World, Kyle Willis

Honors College

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and understand the rapid popularity of horror literature in the 1880s and 1890s through a literary style known as decadent Gothic. To do this, I will analyze two keystone texts of the style: Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Oscar Wilde’s 1891 novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. This analysis will be done using a framework of London’s nineteenth-century urbanization to understand the represented fears in both texts. This thesis shows that urbanization created a decentralized environment full of frightening stimuli, and that decadent …

Evaluating The Effects Of Parasite Infections On Reproductive Ability In Maine Moose, Isabella Costa May 2024

Evaluating The Effects Of Parasite Infections On Reproductive Ability In Maine Moose, Isabella Costa

Honors College

Despite conservation efforts, moose have experienced increasing mortality rates. Winter ticks are known to cause anemia and lower reproductive potential in moose. Moreover, a genus of bacteria, Anaplasma spp., is known to cause a reduction in reproductive efforts in other animals, such as cattle. Because both winter ticks and Anaplasma spp. may affect female reproductive ability, the overall goal of this research was to determine if Anaplasma bacterial infections could be impacting female moose reproduction within the state of Maine. To address this, samples and biological data from moose were collected during hunter harvest, in collaboration with hunters and the …

Exploring Non-Traditional Assessments For Use In High School Stem Courses, Gwenneth Turgeon May 2024

Exploring Non-Traditional Assessments For Use In High School Stem Courses, Gwenneth Turgeon

Honors College

Summative and Formative assessments are essential aspects of education and have been for many years (Guskey, 2005). The use of assessments helps educators check in with students to see where they fall in terms of understanding content and where they could use additional help. Formative assessments are used more to assess students' understanding as they learn the topic (Bloom et al., 1971). In contrast, summative assessments represent the student's mastery of the topic. This text explores and examines a form of summative assessment that uses something other than what has been determined to be the traditional assessment tools, such as …

A Phenomenological Approach To Classic Maya Kingship, Griffin Dever May 2024

A Phenomenological Approach To Classic Maya Kingship, Griffin Dever

The aim of this Honors Thesis project is to describe the experience of the Maya kingship of the Classic period and its role in Maya culture. The thesis takes a phenomenological approach and draws primarily on the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Martin Heidegger, John Russon, and Walter Benjamin. The archaeological record of the Maya world, especially the city of Palenque, is the primary resource upon which this analysis is based, including monumental art and public architecture, ritual, courtly art and stonework, and stelae. However, some focus is also given to existing background literature to provide the reader with some historical …

Ecological, Molecular, And Electron Microscopical Investigations Of The Distribution Of Shell-Boring Polychaetes Along The Coast Of Maine, Emma Tomasetti May 2024

Ecological, Molecular, And Electron Microscopical Investigations Of The Distribution Of Shell-Boring Polychaetes Along The Coast Of Maine, Emma Tomasetti

Honors College

Blister worms are polychaete worms that live in various calcareous materials such as dead shells, red algae, limestone, and cinder blocks, along with cultured shellfish, such as oysters or sea scallops. These worms can be considered a pest due to their nature to burrow into their host’s substrate and create blisters that then fill with mud and detritus. In chapter 1, I worked closely with an oyster farm looking at the reproductive status of one species of blister worm, P. websteri, and the efficacy of cold storage as a method of ridding oysters of P. websteri. For chapter 2, I …

Understanding The Connection Between Water, Fish, And Pfas Concentrations: Implications Of Fish Diet And Species-Specific Variability, Ece Yeldan

Honors College

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS or “forever chemicals,” have emerged as a significant concern for both human health and the environment. These persistent compounds permeate various aspects of commerce, leading to widespread exposure and the cycling of these compounds through environmental feedback routes. Among the sources of exposure to humans, fish consumption stands out prominently. Recreational and sustenance fishing, cherished by Maine residents and indigenous communities alike, underscores the need to comprehend PFAS dynamics in fish and water. To explore the variability of PFAS accumulation in fish, water, and sediment, I conducted a comprehensive literature review. The …
