Marine Sciences Faculty Scholarship
The diurnal fluctuations in solar irradiance impose a fundamental frequency on ocean biogeochemistry. Observations of the ocean carbon cycle at these frequencies are rare, but could be considerably expanded by measuring and interpreting the inherent optical properties. A method is presented to analyze diel cycles in particulate beam-attenuation coefficient (cp) measured at multiple wavelengths. The method is based on fitting observations with a size-structured population model coupled to an optical model to infer the particle size distribution and physiologically relevant parameters of the cells responsible for the measured diel cycle in cp. Results show that the information related to size …

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series
This program brings three distinguished editors of leading journals to campus to discuss the scholarly publishing process: Robert Wilson of Phi Beta Kappa's The American Scholar, Stephen Depoe of Environmental Communication, and R. Brooks Hanson of Science. Each will give a public lecture and Q&A session in the Stodder Hall Graduate Commons on the scholarly publishing process in (respectively) humanities, social science, and science. Although intended primarily for graduate students and faculty, these events will be free, open to the public, and widely advertised. CETA will assist in organizing and advertising. The events will take place at 4 pm on …

Girls Engineer Maine Seminar, College Of Engineering
Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series
The under-representation of women in engineering continues to be a cause of grave concern, particularly as international competitiveness focus attention on the need to increase native participation in the U.S. science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce. Engineering as a career is being promoted to girls through a new College of Engineering initiative called Girls Engineer Maine (GEM). GEM is an educational outreach program designed to increase the number of women studying engineering in Maine.
Emergent Behavior In A Coupled Economic And Coastline Model For Beach Nourishment, Eli D. Lazarus, D E. Mcnamara, M D. Smith, S Gopalakrishnan, A B. Murray
Emergent Behavior In A Coupled Economic And Coastline Model For Beach Nourishment, Eli D. Lazarus, D E. Mcnamara, M D. Smith, S Gopalakrishnan, A B. Murray
Publications
Developed coastal areas often exhibit a strong systemic coupling between shoreline dynamics and economic dynamics. "Beach nourishment", a common erosion-control practice, involves mechanically depositing sediment from outside the local littoral system onto an actively eroding shoreline to alter shoreline morphology. Natural sediment-transport processes quickly rework the newly engineered beach, causing further changes to the shoreline that in turn affect subsequent beach-nourishment decisions. To the limited extent that this landscape/economic coupling has been considered, evidence suggests that towns tend to employ spatially myopic economic strategies under which individual towns make isolated decisions that do not account for their neighbors. What happens …

Legal Needs Assessment Of Older Adults In Maine: 2011 Survey Findings From Key Populations Of Older Adults, Lenard Kaye, Jennifer Crittenden
Maine Center on Aging Research and Evaluation
The purpose of this report was to provide guidance to Legal Services for the elderly in developing outreach and services for older adults. Participants in the survey included 96 older adults who had recently experienced a benefits denial with assistance from the Maine Office of Elder Services, 125 homebound individuals, and 125 adults 70 years or older. Respondents were generally females over the age of 70 who were living with a disability and have lower incomes. The key legal issues in evaluation for future efforts include scams, obtaining or keeping government benefits, home repair problems, debt collection, and getting medical …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Catalysts For The Selective Transformation Of Biomass-Derived Materials, Isaac Tyrone Ghampson
Synthesis And Characterization Of Catalysts For The Selective Transformation Of Biomass-Derived Materials, Isaac Tyrone Ghampson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The experimental work in this thesis focuses on generating catalysts for two intermediate processes related to the thermal conversion of lignocellulosic biomass: the synthesis and characterization of mesoporous silica supported cobalt catalysts for the Fischer-Tropsch reaction, and an exploration of the reactivity of bulk and supported molybdenum-based nitride catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol, a lignin model compound. The first section of the work details the synthesis of a series of silicasupported cobalt Fischer-Tropsch catalysts with pore diameters ranging from 2-23 nm. Detailed X-ray diffraction measurements were used to determine the composition and particle diameters of the metal fraction, …

Development Of A Scale Model Wind Turbine For Testing Of Offshore Floating Wind Turbine Systems, Heather Rae Martin
Development Of A Scale Model Wind Turbine For Testing Of Offshore Floating Wind Turbine Systems, Heather Rae Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the development of a 1/50th scale 5 MW wind turbine intended for wind and wave basin model testing of commercially viable floating wind turbine structures. The design is based on a popular 5 MW wind turbine designed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) commonly utilized in numerical modeling efforts. The model wind turbine is to accompany generic floating model platforms for basin model testing. The ultimate goal of the model development testing program is to collect data for validating various floating wind turbine simulation codes such as those developed by NREL. This thesis will present an …
Adsorption And Diffusion Of Light Hydrocarbons In Ddr Zeolite, Adam Vidoni
Adsorption And Diffusion Of Light Hydrocarbons In Ddr Zeolite, Adam Vidoni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reports the results of an experimental study aimed at characterizing the transport properties of DDR crystals (a pure silica zeolite analog) by the “zero length column” technique. This material is potentially useful as a size selective molecular sieve adsorbent for separation of CH4 – CO2 in the upgrading of low grade natural gas (or biogas) as well as for the separation of C3H6 - C3H8 for production of polypropylene. In both these applications pure silica zeolites (such as DDR) have important practical advantages over the traditional cationic zeolites since they …
Characterization Of Mesoporous Materials Via Fluorescent Spectroscopic Methods, Raymond Russell Kennard
Characterization Of Mesoporous Materials Via Fluorescent Spectroscopic Methods, Raymond Russell Kennard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are three components that need to be understood to create new porous membranes for industrial applications. 1.) To understand appropriate synthesis conditions to create a successful membrane system. 2.) To understand how the microstructures generated in synthesis affect the transport properties of that system. 3) To be able to characterize the heterogeneity of the fabricated membrane’s transport and physical structure.
Presented within this manuscript are new characterization methods to increase the understanding in membrane technology. It will be demonstrated that the novel application of standard fluorescent methods and the development of new fluorescent methods techniques allows for the measurement …

Spatial Population Models In Spatiotemporally Structured Environments, David Hiebeler
Spatial Population Models In Spatiotemporally Structured Environments, David Hiebeler
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Spatial effects, such as habitat fragmentation and the location and size of disturbance events, play a key role in the dynamics of populations. This is true in natural populations (such as herbs living under a forest canopy) as well as human-dominated systems (for example, crop pests in agricultural landscapes). Focusing on the development of spatial population models, the project seeks to better understand how and why spatially autocorrelated disturbances affect the dynamics of populations with mixtures of short- and long-distance dispersal. A variety of disturbances are considered, including (1) static disturbance, representing habitat heterogeneity across a landscape; (2) short-term disturbance …
