Retrieving Marine Inherent Optical Properties From Satellites Using Temperature And Salinitydependent Backscattering By Seawater, P. Jeremy Werdell, Bryan A. Franz, Jason T. Lefler, Wayne D. Robinson, Emmanuel Boss
Marine Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Time-series of marine inherent optical properties (IOPs) from ocean color satellite instruments provide valuable data records for studying long-term time changes in ocean ecosystems. Semi-Analytical algorithms (SAAs) provide a common method for estimating IOPs from radiometric measurements of the marine light field. Most SAAs assign constant spectral values for seawater absorption and backscattering, assume spectral shape functions of the remaining constituent absorption and scattering components (e.g., phytoplankton, non-Algal particles, and colored dissolved organic matter), and retrieve the magnitudes of each remaining constituent required to match the spectral distribution of measured radiances. Here, we explore the use of temperature- and salinity-dependent …

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
The goals of the project were to increase the level and volume of information technologies in the classroom and to promote inquiry-based learning. The project was tightly integrated with the Maine Learning Technology Initiative that puts a laptop computer into the hands of every 7th and 8th grade student and teacher. It was also tightly integrated with the University of Maine Supercomputer. Through the use of technology, students were able to ask “what if questions and find and visualize the answers to their questions. The focus of the inquiry was dynamic Earth modelling. This included geological evolution of the earth …

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
This project will connect researchers at the University of Maine with students and middle school teachers, both at the University (during a summer workshop) and at participating schools (during the academic year) to utilize computer modeling and visualization of geological processes in the classroom. The proposed project will have 60 participating teachers each with 120 contact hours at the University of Maine, as well as 180 students, each with 20 contact hours at the University of Maine. The focus of this project is to integrate computational modeling with the existing science curriculum at the middle school level. This will be …

Maine Town Documents
The Wiscasset Bath Road Master Plan seeks to maximize development opportunities along Bath Road through the strategic coordination of traffic infrastructure improvements, land use policies and design standards while maintaining or improving the mobility and safety of U.S. Route 1. By planning for growth, Bath Road will increase safety, reduce congestion and enhance the visual character. Ultimately, this Master Plan is intended to help Wiscasset (the Town) shape a future for Bath Road and surrounding areas that reflects the needs and values of the community and preserves the Midcoast Region’s most important arterial highway. The Plan covers the areas adjacent …

Faculty Forum : Signature And Emerging Programs, University Of Maine Office Of Academic Affairs
General University of Maine Publications
On December 3, 2013, University of Maine Provost Jeffrey E. Hecker held the first of three Academic Affairs Faculty Forums. The forums are designed as an opportunity for faculty to discuss and provide input on various Academic Affairs initiatives arising from the Blue Sky Project. The December 3rd forum focused on "Signature and Emerging Programs".

Formalizing Spatiotemporal Knowledge In Remote Sensing Applications To Improve Image Interpretation, Christelle Pierkot, Samuel Andrés, Jean François Faure, Frédérique Seyler
Journal of Spatial Information Science
Technological tools allow the generation of large volumes of data. For example satellite images aid in the study of spatiotemporal phenomena in a range of disciplines such as urban planning environmental sciences and health care. Thus remote-sensing experts must handle various and complex image sets for their interpretations. The GIS community has undertaken significant work in describing spatiotemporal features and standard specifications nowadays provide design foundations for GIS software and spatial databases. We argue that this spatiotemporal knowledge and expertise would provide invaluable support for the field of image interpretation. As a result we propose a high level conceptual framework …

Multi-Scale Window Specification Over Streaming Trajectories, Kostas Patroumpas
Journal of Spatial Information Science
Enormous amounts of positional information are collected by monitoring applications in domains such as fleet management cargo transport wildlife protection etc. With the advent of modern location-based services processing such data mostly focuses on providing real-time response to a variety of user requests in continuous and scalable fashion. An important class of such queries concerns evolving trajectories that continuously trace the streaming locations of moving objects like GPS-equipped vehicles commodities with RFID's people with smartphones etc. In this work we propose an advanced windowing operator that enables online incremental examination of recent motion paths at multiple resolutions for numerous point …

Journal of Spatial Information Science
Computational measures of semantic similarity between geographic terms provide valuable support across geographic information retrieval data mining and information integration. To date a wide variety of approaches to geo-semantic similarity have been devised. A judgment of similarity is not intrinsically right or wrong but obtains a certain degree of cognitive plausibility depending on how closely it mimics human behavior. Thus selecting the most appropriate measure for a specific task is a significant challenge. To address this issue we make an analogy between computational similarity measures and soliciting domain expert opinions which incorporate a subjective set of beliefs perceptions hypotheses and …
