Fertilizer And Fungicides: Effects On Wild Blueberry Growth, Insect Attack, And Leaf Spot Disease Incidence, Judith A. Collins, Francis A. Drummond

North American Blueberry Research and Extension Workers Conference

The goal of our three-year field study (two replicated two year trials) was to evaluate the influence of fertility and disease management practices commonly implemented by Maine wild blueberry growers during the prune year. Our treatments reflected grower practices. We tested applications of chlorothalonil (formulated as Bravo®), pyraclostrobin and boscalid (formulated as Pristine®), pyraclostrobin and boscalid with diammonium phosphate fertilizer (formulated as DAP®), and a non-treated control. Measured responses included sap-feeding hemipteran insects, fungal leaf spot pathogens, premature flowering, stem growth characteristics, flower bud cluster production, leaf retention, foliar nutrients, and yield. Among plant …

Vaccinium Corymbodendron Dunal As A Bridge Between Taxonomic Sections And Ploidies In Vaccinium: A Work In Progress, Mark K. Ehlenfeldt, James J. Polashock, James R. Ballington Aug 2018

Vaccinium Corymbodendron Dunal As A Bridge Between Taxonomic Sections And Ploidies In Vaccinium: A Work In Progress, Mark K. Ehlenfeldt, James J. Polashock, James R. Ballington

North American Blueberry Research and Extension Workers Conference

The species V. corymbodendron of section Pyxothamnus has shown value as a potential bridge between taxonomic sections and ploidies in Vaccinium when involved as either a first generation or second generation parent. Tetraploid V. corymbodendron has hybridized successfully with 2x and 4x section Cyanococcus species and with 2x section Vitis-idaea. Hybridizations with other sections are currently being tested. Second generation allotetraploid V. corymbodendron - V. vitis-idaea hybrids have hybridized successfully with 4x section Oxycoccus (cranberry), 4x section Cyanococcus (blueberry), and 2x section Vitis-idaea (lingonberry). It appears that these allotetraploid hybrids may allow gene movement …

Comparison Of Multiple Post-Emergence Callisto Applications For Spreading Dogbane (Apocynum Androsaemifolium L.) Control In Wild Blueberry Fields, Jennifer L. D'Appollonio, David E. Yarborough Aug 2018

Comparison Of Multiple Post-Emergence Callisto Applications For Spreading Dogbane (Apocynum Androsaemifolium L.) Control In Wild Blueberry Fields, Jennifer L. D'Appollonio, David E. Yarborough

North American Blueberry Research and Extension Workers Conference

Spreading dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium L.) is a major weed pest in wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) fields and is difficult to control. In a 2016 trial conducted in a prune year wild blueberry field, spreading dogbane was sprayed post-emergence with mesotrione (Callisto) at 146 mL/ha or 219 mL/ha product per application to 1 x 4 m split plots, with one half also receiving pre-emergence hexazinone (Velpar). Dogbane emergence and growth were monitored, and plots were sprayed when dogbane reached the 3-5 leaf stage and again after regrowth for a total of three Callisto applications for each rate. Although …

Monilinia Vaccinii-Corymbosi Sensitivity To Demethylation Inhibitor Fungicides And Its Effect On Monilinia Blight Control In Wild Blueberry Fields, David Percival, Sherin Jose, Ling Guo, Annemiek Schilder, Randall A. Olson Aug 2018

Monilinia Vaccinii-Corymbosi Sensitivity To Demethylation Inhibitor Fungicides And Its Effect On Monilinia Blight Control In Wild Blueberry Fields, David Percival, Sherin Jose, Ling Guo, Annemiek Schilder, Randall A. Olson

North American Blueberry Research and Extension Workers Conference

Monilinia vaccinii-corymbosi (Reade) Honey (M.vc), the causal agent of Monilinia blight of wild blueberry, is controlled primarily by fungicide applications. Demethylation-inhibiting fungicides (DMIs) have been used for over 30 years for Monilinia blight control due to flexibility of use (i.e., ability to use after an infection period) and disease control effectiveness and consistency. In the present study, the sensitivity of ten M.vc isolates to three DMIs- propiconazole, difenoconazole and prothioconazole-desthio were evaluated in vitro by a mycelial growth inhibition assay. In addition, four field trials were conducted during two crop seasons: 2012 and 2013, to examine the efficacy …

Phosphorus Mobility In Acidic Wild Blueberry Soils In Québec, Canada, Jean Lafond, Noura Ziadi Aug 2018

Phosphorus Mobility In Acidic Wild Blueberry Soils In Québec, Canada, Jean Lafond, Noura Ziadi

North American Blueberry Research and Extension Workers Conference

In the province of Québec, about 35,000 ha of land are devoted to growing wild lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.). Blueberry fields are located on acidic, well-drained soils with low nutrient levels. To ensure high crop productivity, fertilizers are applied in the spring of the sprout year. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of phosphorus (P) fertilizer applications on soil P mobility under field conditions. Experiments were conducted in commercial stands of wild blueberries between 2004 and 2008 in the Lake St. Jean area, Québec, Canada. Four P rates (0 to 90 kg P2 …

Susceptibility To Botrytis Blight At Different Floral Stages Of Wild Blueberry Phenotypes, Joel Abbey, David Percival, Samuel K. Asiedu, Annemiek Schilder Aug 2018

Susceptibility To Botrytis Blight At Different Floral Stages Of Wild Blueberry Phenotypes, Joel Abbey, David Percival, Samuel K. Asiedu, Annemiek Schilder

North American Blueberry Research and Extension Workers Conference

Botrytis blossom blight is an important disease of wild blueberries with yield losses in excess of 20% frequently occurring. Two field experiments were conducted in 2016 and 2017 to determine the susceptibility of four phenotypes (Vaccinium angustifolium, V. angustifolium f. nigrum, V. myrtilloides and V. angustifolium var. Fundy] at different floral stages [(Bud break (F5); bud prebloom; (F6), corolla fully open (F7), and senescent corolla (F8)] to Botrytis infection. Specific flower clusters on tagged stems from different phenotypes were inoculated with Botrytis cinerea conidial suspension (106 conidia·ml-1). Disease development were assessed eight days after …

Floral Bud Cold Hardiness Of Southern Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium Corymbosum L. Interspecific Hybrids) In Response To Late Season Fertilization, Erick Smith, Lauren Redpath

North American Blueberry Research and Extension Workers Conference

The objectives were to identify the effects of late season fertilization on southern highbush blueberry (SHB) dormant floral bud cold hardiness, flower timing, and plant nutrient uptake. Treatments included two fertilizers 10-10-10 (Super Rainbow) and 46-0-0 (urea) and two cultivars, ‘Emerald’ and ‘Star’, grown in pine bark media. There were four late season fertilization treatments: 1) August: 10-10-10 fertilization (28 g/container applied in August); 2) September: 10-10-10 fertilization (20 g and 10 g/container applied August and September, respectively); 3) October: 10-10-10 fertilization (10 g/container applied monthly; August-October); 4) Urea: 46-0-0 fertilization (3 g/container applied August and September). Dormant root and …
