Vaccine-Associated Feline Sarcoma (Vafs) With Multiple Recurrences In A Turkish Van Cat, Yilmaz Aydin, Babür Bi̇li̇r

Vaccine-associated feline sarcoma (VAFS) with multiple recurrences was diagnosed in the specimens at the injection site of a Turkish Van cat that had been vaccinated four months previously. The original tumor consisted of two compartments each 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm in diameter. It recurred five times following surgery and local recurrences necessitated five more radical resections within two years. Euthanasia was performed when pleural effusion developed, but evidence of metastatic disease was not observed. Bioluminescent imaging (BLI) is particularly well suited for imaging small animals, and it can be readily used by scientists who are already routinely using the luciferase gene as a reporter in cell-based assays. This strategy relies on ATP and an O_2 dependent photochemical reaction between luciferin and luciferase, resulting in the release of photons from only live cells. In BLI, the intensity of the light detected by the device is proportional to the intensity of light emitted and the relationship is quantitative. Expressed sequence tag (EST) technology has spurred targeting the functional portion of genomes for several organisms. Constructed redundant complementary DNA (cDNA) libraries have targeted a majority of constitutive and over-expressed genes. However, the majority of lowly expressed and un-induced genes have not been able to be easily tagged and cloned. The objective of this study was to clone low and rarely expressed transcripts in wheat. Using a combination of a polyacrylamide gel and a motif-based PCR amplification, we cloned 144 bands containing 189 wheat fragments. Phytoplankton Biomass And Species Composition Of Lake Gölbaşı (Hatay-Turkey), Mehmet Naz, Mustafa Türkmen

Seasonal distributions of phytoplanktonic organisms in Lake Gölbaşı were investigated in samples collected from 2 stations between May, 2001, and April, 2002. At each station, monthly sampling was performed from the surface water. The flora consisted of 41 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta (24), Chlorophyta (12), Pyrrophyta (2), Cyanophyta (2) and Chrysophyta (1). During the 1-year study period, the most dominant group was Chrysophyta followed by Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Pyrrophyta. The highest numbers of Chrysophyta were observed in both stations in May, 2001, January, 2002 and April, 2002. The epipelic and epilithic algae of Küçükgöl Lake were studied between June and September 2002. Fifty-five taxa (26 belonging to Bacillariophyta, 23 to Chlorophyta, 3 to Cyanophyta and 3 to Euglenophyta) were determined. Closterium lunula var. biconvexum, Cosmarium asphaerosporum var. strigosum, C. garrolense, C. rectangulare, Euastrum ansatum var. dideltiforme, E. denticulatum and E. pseudotuddalense are new records for the algal flora of Turkey.

Effects Of Carbon Sources And Various Chemicals On The Production Of A Novel Amylase From A Thermophilic Bacillus Sp. K-12, Özlem Eren Kiran, Uğur Çömlekçi̇oğlu, Burhan Arikan

The amylase producer thermophilic Bacillus sp. K-12 was isolated from soil samples from Zeytinli hot spring in Kahramanmaraş. Enzyme synthesis occurred at 20-55 ºC with an optimum of 42 ºC. There was a slight variation in amylase synthesis within the pH range 4.5-10.5. Effects of various carbon sources and chemicals on a-amylase production were examined and maximum a-amylase production was obtained in a medium containing 1% starch in 60 h. MnSO_4, ZnSO_4 and EDTA inhibited a-amylase production of Bacillus sp. K-12.

The effects of salinity on the growth, chemical composition and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POX) activities of 2 malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars (Kaya and Scarlet) were studied. In 10-day-old seedlings, salinity stress was initiated by applying an appropriate amount of NaCl to water, and it lasted for 30 days. Salinity decreased growth of the cultivars significantly. Scarlet restricted entry of Na^+ and Cl^- into root and translocation to leaves more efficiently than did Kaya. As a whole Scarlet produced a higher amount total chlorophyll under salinity than did Kaya. POX activity of the cultivars decreased with salinity …

The main objective of this paper is to assess the spatial variability of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) spore numbers in following two contrasting soil uses. Adjacent plots, one irrigated farmland and the other dry farmland, were marked on a transect (300 m long), with 10-m spacing. Soil samples were collected at 0-30 and 30-60 cm depth and were then analyzed for AM spore numbers and some other soil properties. Entomophaga aulicae was monitored in populations of noctuid lepidopteran pests of soybean during the 2000, 2001, and 2002 growing seasons in South Carolina and infected only Plathypena scabra larvae. No infection by E. aulicae was detected in 2002. Average infection levels of E. aulicae in P. scabra populations in Blackville were 6.0% and 20.0% in 2000 and 2001, respectively. At Clemson, infection was 15.0% and 23.3% for the two sampling weeks in 2000, and infection reached a high of 50.0% in 2001. Further phytochemical studies on the aerial parts of Phlomis viscosa (Lamiaceae) led to the isolation of 24 compounds: 3 iridoid glycosides, 10 phenylethanoid glycosides, a megastigmane glycoside and a hydroquinone glycoside, as well as 2 lignan glucosides and 7 neolignan glucosides, 1 of which is new (17b). Compound 17b was obtained as a minor component of an inseparable mixture (2:1) of 2 neolignan glucosides (17a/b), and characterized as 3',4-O-dimethylcedrusin 9-O-\beta -glucopyranoside. Full NMR data of the known 8-O-4' neolignan glucoside, erythro-1-(4-O-\beta-glucopyranosyl-3-methoxyphenyl)- 2-{2-methoxyl-4-[1-(E)-propene-3-ol]-phenoxyl}-propane-1,3-diol (18) are also reported. The kinetics of the adsorption of lead ions on active carbon from aqueous solutions was studied at room temperature at different lead ion concentrations (i.e. 0.1-0.5 g/L). Phthalic anhydride was reacted with L-Valine and L-Leucine in a mixture of acetic acid and pyridine at room temperature, and then was refluxed at 90-100 °C and N-phthaloyl-L-valine or N-phthaloyl-L-leucine were obtained in quantitative yields. The imide-acids were converted to N-phthaloyl-L-valine acid chloride and N-phthaloyl-L-leucine acid chloride by reaction with thionyl chloride. Then 2 new derivatives of the chiral isocoumarin with L-valine and L-leucine moieties were synthesised by the condensation reaction of homophthalic acid with respective imide-acid chloride. 3-Phenyl-6-methyl-4(3H)-quinazolinone-2-yl-mercaptoacetic acid hydrazide (3) was reacted with substituted aldehydes in absolute ethanol to obtain a new series, 3-phenyl-6-methyl-4(3H)-quinazolinone- 2-yl-mercaptoacetic acid arylidenehydrazides (4a-q). The structures of 4a-q were elucidated by elemental analyses and from spectrometric (UV, IR, ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR and EIMS) data. Then 4a-q were evaluated for antibacterial, antifungal and antitubercular activities. No significant activity was observed against the selected microorganisms.
