This study examined the effects of acid shock and acid adaptation on acid tolerance of E. coli O157: H7 932 strain. E. coli O157: H7 were exposed to acid at pH 4.5, 5.0 or 5.5 for acid adaptation or acid shock in tryptic soy broth (acidified with 6 N HCI). Acid shocked cells were incubated for 1, 2, 3 or 4 h while acid adapted cells were incubated for 18 h at 37°C and then acid tolerance of acid shocked and acid adapted cells were determined by exposing to acid challenge of pH 2.5 or 3.0 in tryptic soy broth. …

Twelve medicinal plants were screened, namely Abrus precatorius L., Caesalpinia pulcherrima Swartz., Cardiospermum halicacabum L., Casuarina equisetifolia L., Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., Delonix regia L., Euphorbia hirta L., Euphorbia tirucalli L., Ficus benghalensis L., Gmelina asiatica L., Santalum album L., and Tecomella undulata (Sm.) Seem, for potential antibacterial activity against 5 medically important bacterial strains, namely Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC12228, Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes ATCC17440, Proteus vulgaris NCTC8313 and Salmonella typhimurium ATCC23564. The secreted glycoprotein vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent and specific mitogen for vascular endothelial cells, capable of stimulating angiogenesis during embryonic development and tumor formation. Despite intensive research, the functions of several VEGF family members remain a mystery. A procedure for the separation and preconcentration of trace amounts of copper is proposed. It is based on the adsorption of copper(II) ions solution onto a column of Amberlite XAD-2 resin loaded with disodium 1-nitroso-2-naphthol-3, 6-disulfonate (nitroso-R salt). Copper is quantitatively retained on the column in the pH range 5.5-7.8 at a flow rate of 2 mL min^{-1}. The copper complex eluted with 5 mL of dimethylformamide (DMF) and copper was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) at 324.8 nm. A new series of 12 complexes of oxovanadium(IV) with hydrazones of isonicotinic acid hydrazide, namely N-isonicotinamido-3',4',5'-trimethoxybenzalaldimine (INH-TMB) and N-isonicotinamido-2'-furanaldimine (INH-FUR) with the general formula VOX_2.nL (X = Cl, Br, I, NCS, NO_3, n = 1; X = ClO_4, n = 2; L = INH-TMB or INH-FUR) were synthesized and characterized on the basis of analytical, conductance, molecular weight, magnetic moment, infrared and electronic spectral data. The infrared data of the complexes reveal the bidendate nature of both ligands and coordination to carbonyl-oxygen and azomethinic-nitrogen atoms. Aphidophagus coccinellid (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) species were determined in cultivated and uncultivated fields in Kahramanmaraş. Furthermore, aphid species preyed upon by each coccinellid species were also specified. Adult coccinellids observed feeding on the aphid species were collected by suction tube while immature stages were collected with their preys and cultivated in order to obtain adults. This study yielded 33 coccinellid species feeding upon 59 aphid species. This study was conducted to determine some biological characteristics of Calosoma sycophanta L. under laboratory conditions between 2001 and 2003 in Kahramanmaraş. The adult emergence period of C. sycophanta started at the end of February and extended until the first week of March (from soil). When they emerged, they fed on caterpillars of the pine processionary moth. After 1-1.5 weeks of feeding, adult beetles copulated and deposited their eggs into humid soil. The oviposition period continued for 20-25 days. The first instars hatched from eggs within 6-13 days. The first instars were 7-8 mm in length and dirty whitish–yellow, but …

Taxonomical states and the distribution of 40 Telescopus fallax specimens collected from various regions of Turkey over the past 35 years were evaluated. Information relating to a female Vipera barani and its 2 male juveniles, which were collected 35 km south of the provincial capital Adapazarı is presented. Biological information regarding the latter species is provided for the first time.

This study was conducted in Lake Eğirdir in 2001 and 2002, to investigate some biological characteristics, i.e. sex and length compositions, length-weight relationship and reproduction, of the crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus Eschscholtz, 1823) population. Sex ratios of crayfish caught with fykenets of 34 - mm mesh size (stretched mesh) were 65.2% male and 34.8% female. The total body lengths of both sexes ranged from 40 to 150 mm and the majority were in the 110 mm length class. Although the average lengths of both sexes were nearly the same, the average weight of male crayfish was higher than that of females. …

Growth; length-weight, standard-, fork-, and total length relationships; age composition; sex ratios; age at first maturity; and fecundity of the himri, Barbus luteus, from different sites along the middle reaches of the Euphrates River were investigated. Von Bertalanffy's growth models were L_t = 54.71 (1-e^{0.110 (t+0.163)}), W_t = 1252.833 (1-e^{0.127 (t+1.825)})^{2.454} in males, and L_t = 56.93 (1-e^{0.105 (t+0.377)}), W_t = 1395.363 (1-e^{0.107 (t-1.81)})^{2.545} in females. Isometric growth was identified from length-weight relationships. Younger age groups dominated the catches, with identifiable ages ranged from II to VII years. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of geometrical and positional isomers of linoleic acid (C18:2, cis-9, cis-12). In contrast to linoleic acid, double bonds in CLA are usually located at positions 9 and 11 or 10 and 12 and each double bond can be either in the cis or trans configuration. Meat and dairy products from ruminant animals (such as milk, butter, yogurt and cheese) are the principal natural sources of CLA in the human diet. The biology of the tub gurnard, Chelidonichthys lucernus (Linnaeus, 1758), has been studied on data collected between November 1996 and November 1997 from the Sea of Marmara. Totally, 224 tub gurnards were sampled. The age, growth, length-weight relationship, condition factor, male to female ratio, first sexual maturity age, length and reproduction period were examined. The age composition of samples ranged between 1 and 6 years. Total length ranged between 12.3 and 41.5 cm, while weight varied from 15 to 617 g. Reproductive Biology Of The Common Cuttlefish Sepia Officinalis L. (Sepiida: Cephalopoda) In The Aegean Sea, Bahadir Önsoy, Alp Salman

The common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is known as one of the economically important species in the classis Cephalopoda. In this study, from October 2000 to April 2002, 674 cuttlefish were collected monthly from the surroundings of Homa lagoon (in the Aegean Sea). In order to determine reproductive behaviors and spawning season of S. officinalis species, the gonad stages of both sexes and the seasonal gonadosomatic index values were determined. It was observed that the spawning period of S. officinalis covers the whole year with two maximum peaks in March and June.

In this study, carried out between November 2000 and October 2001, the annual spawning period, first maturity length, length frequency distribution and length/weight relationship of Parapenaeus longirostris that inhabit most commonly the Sea of Marmara were investigated. Analysis of the data obtained from this study revealed that although the mature individuals with fully developed eggs were found almost every month throughout the year, the highest gonadosomatic index values were obtained in September, October, December, April and May. The total length at which 50% of the population reaches maturity is calculated to be 9.7 cm. Among the individuals caught, females at …
