New complexes of chloro-salicylidene aniline with Co(II) and Cu(II) were synthesised and screened for antibacterial activity against several bacterial strains, namely Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The metal complexes showed enhanced antibacterial activity compared to uncomplexed ligands.

The Efficacy Of Spinosad On Different Strains Of Spodoptera Littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Hi̇lal Aydin, M. Oktay Gürkan

The cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval), was collected from commercial cotton production fields in Adana, Turkey, and tested for susceptibility to the insecticide spinosad. The susceptibility of the field strain was also compared to the susceptible strain (S) of S. littoralis. Lethal dose bioassays were performed with third instar larvae using the leaf dip method. The LC50 values for field and susceptible strains were 43.691 and 10.037 ppm, respectively. When LC50 values and 95% confidence intervals were compared with a susceptible laboratory reference strain, the field strain was approximately 4.4-fold less sensitive than the susceptible strain. A pot experiment was performed according to a factorial randomized design at Aligarh to study the effect of 4 levels of gibberellic acid spray (0, 10-8, 10-6 and 10-4 M GA3) on the growth, leaf-NPK content, yield and quality parameters of 2 tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), namely Hyb-SC-3 and Hyb-Himalata. Irrespective of its concentration, spray of gibberellic acid proved beneficial for most parameters, especially in the case of Hyb-SC-3.

Specimens of Silene multifida (Adams) Rohrb. were collected in the vicinity of Yomra, Trabzon, Turkey. The fresh plants were air-dried and chopped. This material was extracted with cold chloroform (CHCl3). The chloroform extract was dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), and, following column chromatography, 6 fractions were obtained. The serial dilutions (0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 10 mg/ml) of these fractions were prepared in 5% Tween 20. The fractions were tested for antimicrobial activity using the agar diffusion technique against 6 bacteria, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Esherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae and Proteus vulgaris, and 1 fungus, Candida albicans. Isolation And Characterization Of Four Isoinhibitors From Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata (L.) Walp.) Seeds, Reda Helmy Ahmed Sammour

Four isoinhibitors of trypsin have been isolated from the cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., in a highly purified state, as indicated by Urea-SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, equilibrium chromatography, and amino acid analysis. The amino acid composition was characterized by the absence of free -SH groups, high half-cysteine, and the absence of tryptophan and methionine in isoinhibitors II and III. Isoinhibitor II contained 96 amino acid residues, whereas isoinhibitor III contained 80. Isoinhibitor II had lysine in the reactive site, while isoinhibitor III had arginine. Digestion of biological materials is very important for trace element determinations. Although the microwave technique is mostly used, there are cases where open wet digestion is needed. This study examined the optimum conditions for the minimum loss of trace elements during the wet digestion of a sample. The effect of acid composition and digestion time for about 21 ions was investigated. The trace element concentrations were determined by differential pulse polarography. On The Taxonomy Of Plantaginaceae Juss. Sensu Lato: Evidence From Sem Of The Seed Coat, Azza Ahmed Shehata, Mohamed Hesham A. Loutfy

SEM of the seed coat was studied in 41 taxa of the Plantaginaceae sensu lato. The study included 31 taxa of Plantago L. and 10 taxa that were formerly assigned to the Scrophulariaceae, representing the genera Antirrhinum L., Digitalis L., Linaria Mill. and Veronica L. The obtained data were analysed by the NT sys-PC program package using the UPGMA clustering method. The study showed that Veronica possessed certain affinities to Plantago species, thus giving extra support to earlier views that Plantaginaceae sensu stricto and Scrophulariaceae sensu lato are allied through Veronica. The karyotypes and morphology of 98 specimens of the subterranean mole rat Spalax leucodon Nordmann, 1840 across 18 localities in and around Kastamonu province were analysed. It was determined that S. leucodon has 2n = 54, NF = 72; 2n = 56, NF = 74; 2n = 58, NF = 74; 2n =60, NF = 74 in the populations from the Kastamonu region. According to these karyological findings based on chromosome morphology the diploid chromosome numbers of 2n = 56, 2n =58, and 2n = 60 determined here are new for Spalax leucodon in Turkey. This study was conducted to determine the mass production of Calosoma sycophanta L. under laboratory conditions (23 °C, 60%-65% RH and a photoperiod of 8:16 (L:D) h, 85%-90% soil humidity) between 2001 and 2004 in Kahramanmaraş. The adult emergence period of C. sycophanta started on 21 February and extended until 7 March (from soil). When they emerged, they fed on caterpillars of the pine processionary moth. A survey of parasitoids of the citrus leafminer, Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), was carried out in the citrus orchards in the east Mediterranean region of Turkey during 1995-2001. Their relative abundance and rate of parasitism were also determined. Ten species of parasitoids were identified: Cirrospilus sp. nr. lyncus (Walker), C. pictus (Nees), C. variegatus (Masi), C. vittatus Walker, C. ingenuus Gahan, Ratzeburgiola incompleta (Boucek), Diglyphus isaea (Walker), Semielacher petiolatus (Girault), Citrostichus phyllocnistoides (Narayanan), Neochrysocharis formosa (Westwood) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). The Feeding Biology Of Ophisops Elegans Menetries, 1832 (Reptilia: Lacertidae) Populations Of The Bursa Region, Abdulmüttali̇p Akkaya, İsmai̇l Hakki Uğurtaş

The feeding biology of Ophisops elegans inhabiting Bursa was investigated. Stomach contents of 66 adult (28 males, 38 females) specimens collected from 3 localities were investigated by numerical analysis. Most of the foods of the Ophisops elegans specimens were insects (64.58%), the majority of which were of larval form (19.44%). Two specimens that were collected from Gürsu were maintained in a terrarium to observe their feeding behaviors. During observations, Ophisops elegans exhibited various feeding behaviors depending on the type of prey and sometimes bit and ate pieces of its prey (legs, wings, etc.).

This research was carried out at 35 stations in 16 different streams on the Biga Peninsula during the spring and summer of 2000 and 2001 to determine the freshwater ichthyofauna and community features. In addition, some physical and chemical parameters of the streams were determined in their natural environment. Fourteen taxa belonging to 5 families were determined. Leuciscus cephalus, Petroleuciscus borysthenicus, Rhodeus amarus, Phoxinus phoxinus, Chalcalburnus chalcoides, Barbus tauricus escherichi, Gobio gobio, Capoeta capoeta bergamae, Vimba vimba, Cobitis fahirae and Neogobius fluviatilis are recorded for the first time from the Biga Peninsula. The present study is based on species collected and observed in Kazdağı National Park and its surroundings. Field collections yielded 40 mammal species from 6 orders: Insectivora (4), Chiroptera (14), Lagomorpha (1), Rodentia (11), Carnivora (8), and Artiodactyla (2), Of the species recorded in this study, 6 were new records from north-west Anatolia: Sorex volnuchini, Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis emarginatus, Eptesicus serotinus, Hypsugo savii, and Microtus subterraneus.

This study is based on the records of gestation and lactation periods of 17 bat species (Rousettus aegyptiacus, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, R. hipposideros, R. euryale, R. blasii, Myotis myotis, M. blythii, M. emarginatus, M. nattereri, M. mystacinus, M. capaccinii, Eptesicus serotinus, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P. kuhlii, P. savii, Plecotus auritus, and Miniopterus schreibersii) caught from various localities in Turkey and of the development stages of embryos belonging to Myotis species. This study is based on 62 Sciurus anomalus specimens obtained from Konya, Karaman, Kütahya and Çorum provinces between 1997 and 2002. Some ecological and biological features of the species, including habitat, nest-sites, fur colour, baculum and phallus were investigated. In this species, the chromosome number (2n) is 40. For the taxonomical evaluation of Sciurus anomalus, morphometric data of the specimens were used. The specimens were discussed at the subspecies level, comparing to the relevant literature, and it was concluded that our specimens represent the nominate form.

One of the major hurdles in implementing chaotic communication schemes is the synchronization of chaotic systems. For the last two decades, numerous contributions of varying successes have been made by researchers from different disciplines for the synchronization of chaotic systems.
