Mono-, Di- And Trinuclear Copper(Ii) Complexes Of A Schiff Base Ligand, 2-{(E)-[(6-{[(1e)-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)Methylene]Amino}Pyridin-2-Yl)Imino]-Methyl}Phenol, Nevi̇n Karaböcek, Serdar Karaböcek, Fatma Kormali
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A Schiff base ligand, 2-{(E)-[(6-[(1E)-(2-hydroxyphenyl) methylene]amino}-pyridin-2-yl)imino]-methyl} phenol (H_2PySAL), was prepared by condensation of 2,6-diaminopyridine and salicylaldehide in EtOH. The Schiff base ligand was checked by elemental analyses, ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, IR, UV/Vis, and mass spectral studies. Three new mono-, di-, and trinuclear copper(II) complexes of the Schiff base ligand, formula [Cu(H_2PySAL)]Cl_2, [Cu_2(PySAL) (Phen)]Cl_2, [Cu_3(PySAL)_2]Cl_2, were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moment, and IR, Uv/Vis, and mass spectral studies. The spectroscopic data of the complexes indicate that the copper(II) ions are coordinated by the oxygen atoms and nitrogen atoms (C=N) of the ligand. In the dinuclear complex, in which the …

A series of acylhydrazones (2a-f) were synthesized by the condensation of iminoester hydrochlorides (1a-f) with acyl hydrazines. 2,5-Dialkyl 1,3,4-oxadiazoles (3a,c,e) were obtained in the same reaction media. The treatment of acylhydrazones with hydrazine hydrate afforded 4-amino-3,5-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazoles (4a-c). The acetylation of 4-amino-3,5-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazoles produced N-[3,5-dialkyl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl] acetamides (5-7). The treatment of compounds 4a and 4c with various aromatic aldehydes resulted in the formation of 4-arylidenamino-3,5-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazoles (8a,d, e, and 10a-e). Sodium borohydride reduction of 4-arylidenamino derivatives afforded 4-alkylamino-3,5-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazoles (9a,d, e, and 11a-e). Compounds 4b, 4c, 7, 8d, and 11c showed good antifungal activity only against yeast-like fungi, while compounds 3e, 6, 8e, and 9e …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Field experiments were carried out at the Agricultural Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tabriz, in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. Three winter oilseed rape cultivars (Okapi, Licord, and SLM046) with 12 weed interference durations were evaluated in a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The experiments consisted of 2 sets of treatments. In the first set, the crop was kept weed-free until the growth stages of 4-leaf, 8-leaf, stem elongation, flowering, and podding. In the second set, weeds were permitted to grow within the crop until the above-mentioned growth stages. Weedy and weed-free checks …

To achieve the synthesis of azasugar derivatives with the utilization of singlet oxygen, pyridine was used as the starting material. The reduction of pyridine followed by a singlet oxygen reaction afforded cyclic aza-endoperoxides (14 and 16). However, many attempts were made to convert the aza-endoperoxides to the corresponding di- and triacetates without success. However, the base-catalyzed rearrangement of 14 gave unprecedented rearrangement products 23 and 24.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Two novel vic-dioxime (L^1H_2, L^2H_2) compounds bearing hydrazone side groups and their transition metal complexes Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) were synthesized. The vic-dioxime ligands bearing hydrazone side groups were synthesized by reacting anti-glyoximehydrazine (GH_2) with 4-nitroacetophenone and 4-methylacetophenenone, respectively. Ligands form mononuclear complexes [(LH)_2M] with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:2 with M=Co(II)(H_2O)_2, Ni(II), and Cu(II). Zn(II) forms complexes [(LH)(H_2O)(Cl)Zn] with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:1. The Co(II) complexes of the ligands are proposed to be octahedral with water molecules as axial ligands, the Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes are proposed to be square planar, and the …

Food Restriction Affects Locomotor Activity In Mongolian Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus), Alper Karakaş, Erdi̇nç Seri̇n, Bülent Gündüz
Turkish Journal of Biology
The circadian rhythm of the locomotor activity is regulated by at least 2 external pacemakers, environmental photoperiod and food availability. In the present study, the effects of short-term (2 weeks) food restriction on locomotor activity rhythm in adult male and female Mongolian gerbils were investigated. Animals were fed ad libitum with no restriction during the first week of the experiment and their daily ad libitum food consumptions were determined. Then the food was restricted 40% of ad libitum for the next 2 weeks. At constant temperature, locomotor activity was monitored by running wheel in animals exposed to a long photoperiod …

The present work examined the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil and methanol extract from Achillea biebersteinii Afan. (Asteraceae). The essential oil exhibited antimicrobial activity against 8 bacteria, 14 fungi and the yeast C. albicans, whereas methanolic extract remained inactive. The antioxidative capacity of the samples was evaluated by using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and b-carotene/linoleic acid assays. In both assays, the extract showed better antioxidative capacity than the oil. The extract reduced the stable free radical DPPH with lower IC50 value (89.90 µg/ml) than the oil (8900 µg/ml). In the b-carotene/linoleic acid assay, the samples were not …

Identification Of A Lactic Bacterium Strain Used For Obtaining A Pollen-Based Probiotic Product, Adrian Vamanu, Emanuel Vamanu, Manuel Drugulescu, Ovidiu Popa, Gheorghe Campeanu
Turkish Journal of Biology
This study concerns the identification of a Lactobacillus acidophilus strain by conventional taxonomic techniques (cultivation at different temperatures, different pH values, use of different carbon sources, development on different media and determination of antibioresistance) and by molecular genetic techniques (determination of G and C content). The strain is used for inoculation in media with ground or unground pollen and honey, in order to obtain a probiotic product. Over 72 h the glucid consumption, cell viability and acid production is measured.

Full fat flaxseed flour was supplemented with wheat flour @ 5, 10, 15, 20,25 and 30%. Cookies were prepared from composite flours. Cookies prepared without flaxseed flour were kept as control. The mean quality score of the cookies decreased with the increase in the level of the flaxseed flour supplementation. Colour and crispiness of the cookies showed a declining trend as compared to flavour and texture of cookies. Cookies containing 20% and lower level of the full fat flaxseed flour were acceptable in relation to their overall acceptability. Significant reduction in the spread factor of the cookies was observed. Addition …
