Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The electrochemical oxidation of anodic Ti, Fe, Cd, Sn, and Pb (=M) into acetonitrile solutions of N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-o-phenylenediamine [SalophH_2] gives the corresponding M(Saloph) complexes in high yield. The mechanism of the electrochemical reactions is discussed. SalophH_2 forms complexes (1:1 molar ratio) with titanium, iron, cadmium, tin, and lead ions. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivity measurements, and infrared and electronic spectral data. The SalophH_2 complexes of iron(II) and cadmium(II) have been further identified by ^1H-NMR and mass spectra.

Comparative Genotoxic Potential Of Mercury And Cadmium In Soybean, Girjesh Kumar, Priyanka Rai Jan 2007

Comparative Genotoxic Potential Of Mercury And Cadmium In Soybean, Girjesh Kumar, Priyanka Rai

Turkish Journal of Biology

Genotoxic effects of two heavy metals viz. mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) on somatic and gametic cells of soybean were investigated. Seeds were treated with different doses of these heavy metals. Treatments with Hg and Cd not only reduced the frequency of dividing cells but a wide spectrum of chromosomal abnormalities were also recorded. Pollen fertility was found to be significantly correlated with meiotic irregularities found in the metal treatment sets. It was found that both of these heavy metals are capable of inducing chromosomal aberrations, but Hg is much more genotoxic than Cd, since it induces greater abnormalities.

Life In The Absence Of Oxygen: Alternative Electron Acceptors For Anaerobic Microorganisms In A Petroleum Environment, Meli̇ke Balk

Turkish Journal of Biology

Anaerobic microorganisms derive energy by transferring electrons from an external source or donor to an external electron sink or terminal acceptor and often have the capacity to reduce 2 or more terminal electron acceptors. The well-known type of microbial respiration, in which oxygen serves as an electron acceptor for the oxidation of organic carbon and/or hydrogen, has been studied elsewhere in detail. Anaerobic microorganisms are widely distributed in oil-producing vents, hydrothermal vents, volcanic hot springs, non-volcanic geothermally heated subsurface aquifers, and soil. In this study, anaerobic, thermophilic, and fermenting microorganisms in a petroleum sample from the Adıyaman region of Turkey …

In Vitro Antibacterial Studies Of Ciprofloxacin-Imines And Their Complexes With Cu(Ii),Ni(Ii),Co(Ii), And Zn(Ii), Muhammad Imran, Javed Iqbal, Shahid Iqbal, Nazia Ijaz

Turkish Journal of Biology

Some new transition metal complexes of ciprofloxacin-imines derived from ciprofloxacin and p-substituted anilines were synthesized and characterized on the basis of physical properties, conductance measurements, elemental analysis, UV/Vis., infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These ligands as well as their metal complexes were also evaluated for their antibacterial activity against several bacterial strains, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilus, Salmonella typhae, and E. coli. It was found that metal complexes are more antibacterial as compared to uncomplexed ligands. The present study was carried out in search of a target antibiotic instead of a broad spectrum one.

Turkish Journal of Biology

We investigated whether photoperiodic information is transferred from mother to young and whether the pineal gland and its hormone, melatonin, are involved in this transfer in Mongolian gerbils. Adult female gerbils were paired with males and housed in photoperiods of 12L:12D or 8L:16D. Three groups of pregnant gerbils in each photoperiod were prepared: one group was the sham-operated control, one group consisted of pinealectomized gerbils, and one group consisted of pinealectomized gerbils that were treated with melatonin. Pinealectomy was performed before pairing the animals and melatonin injections were applied to the pinealectomized group from day 8 of gestation until parturition. …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Electrochemical polymerization of 1,4-diaminobenzene in the KCl aqueous electrolyte at a potential of 0.600 V versus Ag/AgCl produces adherent poly(1,4-diaminobenzene) film on a gold electrode. The electrochemical behavior of dopamine and ascorbic acid at the polymer electrode prepared in this manner was examined by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. Voltammetry studies showed that polymeric film with a thickness corresponding to a 7-mC charge exhibited selective permeation for dopamine while retaining ascorbic acid. All the polymerization parameters affecting the permselective characteristics were systematically investigated and the optimum values were determined. The results showed that a polymeric membrane, owing to its permselective …
