To evaluate the effects of alendronate (ALN) and risedronate (RIS), which are agents for preventing and treating postmenopausal osteoporosis, on hepatic antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation in ovariectomized rats. Materials and methods: Thirty-two female rats were randomly assigned to 4 separate groups. All of the groups, except the control group, were ovariectomized. Included in the 4 groups were a control group (C), an ovariectomized group (OVX), an ovariectomized group treated with alendronate (OVX-ALN), and an ovariectomized group treated with risedronate (OVX-RIS). To investigate the association between the 3 most frequently observed single nucleotide polymorphisms of the NAT2 gene and the risk of developing prostate cancer in the Turkish population. Materials and methods: A total of 110 unrelated patients with prostate cancer were included in this case-control association study and constituted the study group. The control group also consisted of 150 unrelated but healthy men. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood leukocytes of all patients and analyzed with a sensitive real-time PCR method. Serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) level is used for prediction of cancer, but this approach suffers from weak sensitivity and specificity. We applied binary-split decision tree (DT) algorithm to prostate cancer prediction problem. Materials and methods: Quick, Unbiased and Efficient Statistical Tree (QUEST) algorithm was used in 750 patients who had a serum PSA levels between 0 and 10 ng/mL. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), non-tuberculosis pulmonary disease (non-PTB) and healthy subjects. Materials and methods: Serum ADA activity was measured using the Giusti and Galanti method, and the total antioxidant capacity of plasma was determined by the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) test. Results: The serum ADA levels were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in pulmonary TB (PTB, 19.78 ± 7.09 U/L), as well as in non-PTB patients (14.78 ± 4.65 U/L) when compared to healthy controls (10.02 ± 1.99 U/L). The sensitivity and specificity were found to be 71.7% and 63.3%, respectively, in distinguishing PTB from non-PTB. In distinguishing PTB from healthy subjects, the sensitivity and specificity were 87% and 93.3%, respectively. The TAC was significantly lower in PTB (485.2 ± 190.0 µM) and non-PTB patients (588.3 ± 195.8 µM), when compared to the controls (784.3 ± 190.0 µM; P < 0.001). Plasma antioxidative activity decreased in PTB and non-PTB patients when compared to the controls. Conclusion: We concluded that serum ADA activity is not a useful test to differentiate pulmonary TB from other respiratory diseases. The TAC is low in pulmonary TB, therefore supplementation with a suitable anti-oxidant may be useful.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of chronic pain and its relationship to depression. The present study was designed to elucidate the pharmacological and biological effects of Sargassum muticum extracts on the production of inflammatory mediators in macrophages. S. muticum was extracted with 80% EtOH. The extract was then successively partitioned with n-hexane, CH_2Cl_2, EtOAc, BuOH, and water. The results indicate that the CH_2Cl_2 fraction of S. muticum extract was an effective inhibitor of LPS-induced NO and PGE_2 production in RAW 264.7 cells. Ghrelin, a recently isolated hormone, has been reported to have modulatory effects on smooth muscle contractility. In this study, we investigated the effects of ghrelin on spontaneous contractions in the rat uterus in vitro. Myometrium strips were removed from Wistar rats following decapitation and placed in a jacketed tissue bath. After initiation of spontaneous contractions, control contractions were recorded for 10 min and various concentrations of ghrelin were added to the tissue bath cumulatively. Enantiomerically pure, fluorinated compounds have an important role in medicinal chemistry. Alternaria alternata isolates were used for the synthesis of (S)-2^'-fluorophenylethan-1-ol 1b and (S)-3^'-fluorophenylethan-1-ol 2b. Biocatalytic syntheses of optically active 1b and 2b were achieved by asymmetric reduction of 2^'-fluoroacetophenone 1a and 3^'-fluoroacetophenone 2a in the batch culture of A. alternata containing ram horn peptone (RHP). The present study examined the effects of Bacillus pumilus, Pseudomonas alcaligenes, and Rhizobium sp. on wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lentis and on the growth of lentil. Inoculation with F. oxysporum caused significant wilting, and reduced plant growth, the number of pods, and nodulation. Inoculation with B. pumilus together with P. alcaligenes caused a greater increase in plant growth, number of pods, nodulation, and root colonization by rhizobacteria, and also reduced Fusarium wilting to a greater degree than did individual inoculation. The present investigation was conducted to study the effects of auxin and cytokinin on callus induction from leaf blade, nodal, and runner segments of 3 strawberry clones. Among the 32 media combinations tested, 4.0 mg/L NAA + 1.5 mg/L IBA yielded the highest percentage of callus in all types of explants. The rate of adventitious shoot regeneration from callus was also influenced by explant type and concentration of BA in MS medium. The compositions of the essential oils of 5 Turkish Salvia species, namely Salvia aucheri Bentham var. aucheri (endemic for Turkey), Salvia aramiensis Rech. fil., Salvia fruticosa Mill., Salvia tomentosa Mill., and Salvia verticillata L. subsp. amasiaca (Freyn & Bornm.) Bornm., were studied. Water distilled essential oils from the aerial parts of Salvia species from Turkey were analysed by GC and GC/MS. The aim of the present research was to investigate the genotoxic potency of benzoyl peroxide (BPO), a whitener of flour and cheese, using in vitro sister chromatid exchange (SCE), chromosome aberration (CA), and micronucleus (MN) tests in human peripheral lymphocytes. Cells were exposed to 25, 50, 75, and 100 µg/mL concentrations of BPO for 24 and 48 h. BPO induced SCEs only at the highest concentration (100 µg/mL) for 48 h treatment. A pot experiment was conducted during the winter season of 2006, on 2 cvs. of periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus L.), namely "rosea" (Pink) and "alba" (White), to investigate their performance in terms of growth, yield, and alkaloid production, as well as other physiological and biochemical attributes. The plants were harvested at 60, 90, and 150 days after planting (DAP) and the yield was recorded at 210 DAP. The genetic diversity of 11 bread and durum wheat varieties was estimated using germination characteristic and molecular analysis. The phenotypic data showed highly significant differences between cultivars for germination speed, germination percentage, seedling length, fresh weight, and dry weight. Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were used to examine the genomic diversity of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. and Triticum durum L.). White bread loaves prepared from wheat flour and the addition of different levels of acidulants, i.e. acetic and lactic acid with calcium propionate, were evaluated for their microbial shelf life as well as sensory quality characteristics during 96 h of storage. Among the sensory characteristics for the different treatments, volume of bread, color of crust, symmetry of form, crust characteristics, grain, and crumb color differed significantly, and the scores were 6.5-7.4, 5.8-6.8, 2.9-3.4, 2.7-3.1, 10.6-11.8, and 6.8-7.4, respectively, whereas evenness of bake, aroma, taste, and texture were not significantly different. Fifteen species belonging to 3 genera (Onobrychis, Hedysarum and Sartoria), collected from different geographical regions of Turkey were studied for the polypeptide patterns of their seed storage proteins. The variability of seed storage proteins was analysed by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). As many as 72 bands were scored and a dendrogram was constructed using UPGMA (unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean). The dendrogram of the electrophoretic protein profiles of seeds showed 2 main clusters. While the first cluster with further subclusters included Onobrychis species, the second cluster included Sartoria and Hedysarum species present in 2 separate subclusters. …

The protein patterns of 47 Centaurea species from Turkey were obtained using SDS-PAGE methods. Relationships between Centaurea species and related genera were evaluated via use of a dendrogram. SDS-PAGE provided protein profiles for an important and applicable selection within Centaurea, particularly for the section Cheirolepis and its relatives. We determined that the technique could be used to resolve taxonomic and evolutionary problems in the genus Centaurea, as most of the Centaurea species studied exhibited special protein profiles and patterns.

Glucose sensing and signaling processes require a variety of membrane-bound and cytoplasmic sensor proteins. Pho85p is a cyclin-dependent protein kinase that controls different metabolic events upon binding to its cyclin partners in the cytoplasm of yeast cells. Sampling was accomplished in and around the city of Faisalabad, especially at the Khadija Mahmood Trust Hospital and at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan.
