Preparation And Characterization Of Anticancer Drug-Loaded Implantable Plga Microparticles, Meltem Çeti̇n, İmran Vural, Alptuğ Ati̇la, Yücel Kadioğlu

This article describes the preparation and characterization of anticancer drug-loaded poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microparticles. PLGA microparticles loaded with doxorubicin HCl (DOX) were prepared via o/w emulsion solvent evaporation. The release characteristics, encapsulation efficiency, size, and morphology of the PLGA microparticles were also determined. A cytotoxicity test was performed by using Glioma RG2 cancer cells to investigate the cytotoxicity of DOX-loaded PLGA microparticles. The DOX-loaded PLGA microparticles had an average diameter of 500 \pm 9 nm. The DOX encapsulation efficiency and drug loading were 22.75% and 0.78%, respectively. 2-(4-Amino-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-oxo-4,5--dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol- 1-yl)-N'-[(2,6-dihalogenophenyl)-methylene]acetohydrazides (3a,b) was obtained via the formation of 2-(4-amino-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-oxo-4,5- dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)acetohydrazide (2), which was obtained starting from 4-amino-5-(4-chlo\-rophenyl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-one (1) in 2 steps. 2-{[4-amino-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-oxo-4,5--dihydro-1H- 1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]acetyl}-N-phenylhydra-zine carbothioamide (4), which was prepared starting from 2, was converted to the corresponding 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivative (5) in acidic media. Moreover, the basic treatment of 4 resulted in the formation of 4-amino-5-(4-chlorophenyl)- 2-[(4-phenyl-5-thioxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)methyl]-2,4- dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-one (7). The reactions of compounds 5 and 7 with methyl iodide in the presence of sodium ethoxide afforded the corresponding N-methyl (6) and S-methyl (8) derivatives, respectively. Compounds 2 were synthesised via the reaction of 4-amino-5-thiophen-2-yl-methyl-2,4-dihydro-[1,2,4]-triazol-3-one (1) with aldehydes. Compounds 3 and 4 were obtained from compounds 2 with bromo acetophenone and ethyl bromoacetate, respectively. The synthesis of compounds 2, 3, and 4 and crystal structure of compound 2a are being reported. The molecular structures were identified by IR, ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, MS, and elemental analyses. The essential oils of mosses [Tortula muralis Hedw. (Pottiaceae), Homalothecium lutescens (Hedw.) H. Rob. (Brachytheciaceae), Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. (Hypnaceae), and Pohlia nutans (Hedw.) Lindb. (Mniaceae)] were investigated by means of GC-FID/MS techniques. The major components were nonanal (18.3%) and tetradecanol (4.3%) in the oil of T. muralis, nonanal (36.8%) and tricosane (6.5%) in the oil of H. lutescens, nonanal (12.5%) and 2E-tetradecen-1-ol (6.9%) in the oil of H. cupressiforme, and nonanal (7.8%) and 2E-tetradecen-1-ol (7.1%) in the oil of P. nutans. A simple and fairly fast capillary zone electrophoresis method has been developed for the determination and separation of ceftriaxone, ceftizoxime, paracetamol, and diclofenac sodium in a mixture, in pharmaceutical formulations, and in blood serum. A 50 mM sodium tetraborate background electrolyte solution (pH 9.0) was found to be suitable for separation of all the drugs. An uncoated fused-silica capillary of a total length of 57 cm (effective length 50 cm) was used for separation. First Reported Case Of Chironomid Midge Larva Infestations In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss Walbaum 1792) Eggs, Şevki̇ Kayiş, İlhan Altinok, Fi̇kri̇ Balta

Six days after transfer of eyed stage rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) eggs into an incubator, egg mortality occurred during the winter of 2007. During the outbreak, approximately 30% of the eggs died. Rheocricotopus fuscipes (Kieffer, 1909) and Eukiefferiella claripennis (Lundbeck, 1898) (subfamily Orthocladiinae), Chironomid midge larvae were observed on the eggs by examining the eggs under the microscope. Histological sections of the infested eggs exhibited midge bite marks. This is the first report of Chironomid midges preying on fish eggs.

Extracellular calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) is a recently discovered G-protein-coupled receptor that may play a key role in regulating parathyroid hormone secretion and calcium homeostasis. In the present study, based on the reported sequence of the chicken CaSR gene (GenBank accession: XM_416491), specific primers were designed and synthesized, and CaSR gene mRNA expression and tissue distribution in chickens were analyzed using semiquantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. It was observed that CaSR mRNA was expressed in the kidney and parathyroid to a greater degree than in the small intestine, oviduct, and brain (P < 0.01). Sequence analysis of the PCR products obtained from the 5 tissues showed that these cDNAs shared 100% homology with each other and the corresponding region of the reported CaSR cDNA. The results may provide a basis and additional insight for understanding the physiological function of CaSR in chickens.

The present study examined the haematological effects of ichthyophthiriasis in common carp. Blood was collected from 4 groups of juvenile carp: 1. healthy; 2. with minor symptoms of ichthyophthiriasis; 3. with severe symptoms of ichthyophthiriasis (moribund); survivors of ichthyophthiriasis after a 3-week recovery period. Blood was subjected to a standard haematological procedure and the following parameters were evaluated: haematocrit (Ht), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), erythrocyte (RBC) and leukocyte (WBC) counts, mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell haemoglobin (MCH), and mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC). Elymus sosnowskyi, a rare endemic species known from East Anatolia, Turkey, was first collected by D. Sosnowsky in 1912. After that it has been collected only one other time, by F. Sorger in 1981. During the "Taxonomic revision of tribe Triticeae in Turkey" project, which was supported by TÜBİTAK, E. sosnowskyi was recollected from 3 populations in Oltu and Narman (A8 Erzurum, Turkey) in 2007 and 2008. Anomodon longifolius (Schleich. ex Brid.) Hartm. is reported for the first time from Turkey, bringing the total number of Anomodon species known from Turkey to 6. This record extends its distribution range to the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. The nearest localities to Turkey for this species are in Bulgaria, Greece, the Caucasus, and Iran. This submeridional species was collected from 3 different localities (in Bolu and Bartın provinces) in Turkey. A site description, illustrations, and diagnostic characters of the Turkish specimens are given, together with notes on its distribution and ecology.

The ovule ontogenesis and the megasporogenesis events in Onobrychis schahuensis Bornm. were studied with light microscopy. The primordium is tetra-zonate and gives rise to an anatropous ovule. The archesporium may consist of one or more archesporial cells, but only one of them undergoes meiosis, forming a linear shaped tetrad. Normally, only a single megaspore is functional, which is located in the chalazal position, while the others degenerate very soon. The young ovule is hemianatropous but the mature one is anatropous, crassinucellar, and bitegmic; integuments form a zig-zag micropyle. The taxonomic study of 382 samples collected from Hatila Valley National Park (Artvin, Turkey) revealed 126 taxa of macromycetes, belonging to 34 families and 60 genera. Two of them, Arrhenia acerosa (Fr.) Kühn. (Tricholomataceae) and Entoloma politum (Pers.: Fr.) Donk. (Entolomataceae), are new records for Turkey.

In this article we consider a version of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm which is appropriate for search tasks of multi-agent systems consisting of small robots with limited sensing capability. The proposed method adopts asynchronous mechanism for information exchange and position (way point) updates of the agents. Moreover, at each (information exchange) step the agents communicate with only a possibly different subset of the other agents leading to a dynamic neighborhood topology. The mechanism(s) by which Zn alleviates NaCl stress was investigated in Pistacia vera L. 'Badami'. Pistachio seedlings were treated with 0, 800, 1600, 2400, and 3200 mg of NaCl kg^{-1} of soil, along with Zn (0, 5, 10, and 20 mg kg^{-1} of soil). NaCl stress induced high oxidative stress, increasing lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, and lipoxygenase (LOX, E.C. 1.13.11.12) activity to high levels. Zn supplement efficiently reduced all these adverse effects of salt stress. However, there were no significant differences among the above parameters in plants treated with Zn only. NaCl stress significantly increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes. …

Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIP) play important roles in the defense against plant pathogens, especially fungi. The sequence of strawberry PGIP gene was obtained using reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and its expression in different tissues was studied by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. A cDNA fragment of FaPGIP gene was cloned and the sequence analysis shows that the fragment contains a full ORF of 999 bp encoding 332 amino acids. The FaPGIP gene from genomic DNA shows a single 168bp intron that is efficiently spliced out of the FaPGIP pre-mRNA transcript. In this study, relationships among the 15 taxa of the genus Crocus L. distributed in Turkey were analysed using 29 morphological and 4 anatomical characters. Analysis of the data set utilising maximum parsimony criterion with Branch-and-Bound search algorithm yielded 32 most parsimonious trees. Bootstrap analysis with the majority rule consensus algorithm generated a consensus tree supporting some branches. Our data mostly did not agree with the previous sectional and serial treatments. The lack of reliable diagnostic methods is a setback in the effective control of diseases. Diagnosis of Trypanosoma evansi infection (surra) in livestock is of considerable economic importance. Detection of trypanosomes in blood has been the "gold standard"; however, finding the organisms or establishing patency of parasitaemia has not always been possible even in symptomatic infections. As a consequence of low dose infection, the pre-patent period in Trypanosoma evansi may be longer and, even when symptoms have developed, trypanosomes may still not be demonstrable in blood, thus delaying treatment and thereby increasing morbidity and mortality. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited haemoglobin (Hb) disorder associated with vaso-occlusive events, oxidative stress, high energy demand, and endothelial dysfunction. CD10 has been suggested as a useful prognostic marker for urothelial carcinoma, but there are only a few studies of CD10 in urothelial tumors and they have shown varying results. To determine the psychosocial and demographic factors related to marital adjustment and emotional symptoms in infertile couples according to gender differences. Materials and methods: The study sample, consisting of 60 primary infertile couples, was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The scores derived from men and women were compared according to infertility factor. Multiple regression analysis models were used to explore the linkages between emotional symptoms and marital adjustment. Results: Statistically significant gender differences were noted in affectional expression and sexual satisfaction domains of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (P < 0.05). Our analyses showed that various aspects of marital adjustment have predictive power on anxiety and depressive symptoms of infertile men, especially when the infertility is due to male factor. Conclusion: Results of this study emphasize the importance of psychological and sexual counseling in the course of infertility treatment.

We aimed to investigate the renal effects of meloxicam, a preferential cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor nonsteroidal antiiflammatory drug, and lornoxicam, a nonspecific cyclooxygenase inhibitor, in rats. We wanted to test the hypothesis that preferential cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors have a higher renal safety profile when compared with the nonspecific cyclooxygenase inhibitors. To determine the sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics of adolescents who attempt suicide and evaluate them by different scales. Materials and methods: The study was conducted with 116 adolescent suicide attempters and 98 age-matched healthy controls. Results: The mean age of all adolescents was 13.8 ± 1.2 years, with ages ranging from 11 to 16 years. Of these adolescents, 82.7% were girls. To investigate the effects of ingesting Fructus vitis minuta (black grape) on plasma and erythrocyte antioxidant parameters in elderly subjects. Materials and methods: Thirteen subjects (mean age 74.67 ± 0.58) participated in the study. They consumed 1 g/kg body weight per day of dried black Maraş grapes for 1 month. Before and after these periods, fasting blood samples were obtained, and oxidant (as MDA) and antioxidant (as SOD) parameters were studied in erythrocytes. Also, plasma samples were obtained from the subjects. Results: In the erythrocyte hemolysate, MDA (malondialdehydes) levels and SOD (superoxide dismutase) activities were found to be lower (P < 0.01) in the second samples compared to the first ones. Conclusion: We think that because free radical production was decreased SOD activities were not increased. Our results show that reduced peroxidation processes caused by Maraş grape consumption suggest that grape consumption has beneficial effects in elderly subjects.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent antigen-presenting cells crucial for initiation of cell-mediated immune responses to foreign antigens. They also contribute to the innate resistance against microbial pathogens. The present study examined the effect of microorganisms such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS), and Candida albicans (C. albicans) on cytokine secretion in bone marrow-dendritic cells (BM-DCs). Chronic fluorosis results in tubular degenerations, inflammation, fibrosis, parenchymatous nephritis, cloudy swellings, and dilations of convoluted tubules.
