The composition and abundance of phytoplankton and the corresponding environmental conditions were investigated during a mucilage event (October 2007-February 2008) in the Sea of Marmara. The mucilage producers Gonyaulax fragilis, Skeletonema costatum, and Cylindrotheca closterium were identified as abundant species. Thallassiosira rotula was also identified in large numbers. The maximum number of G. fragilis was observed at 83,600 cells L^{-1} in November 2007 during the first sampling occasion on the surface layer of İzmit Bay, and T. rotula was the most abundant diatom species, with 131,040 cells L^{-1} in the same period. The Wnt signaling pathway is evolutionary conserved and controls many biological processes like cell proliferation and differentiation. It also provides planar polarity, regulation of the cell cycle, and cell adhesion during both the embryonic and adult period. However, it has been widely considered in the literature that some pathological alterations in various biomolecules involved in this pathway, and aberrant activation of signaling have important roles primarily in the genesis of colorectal and cervical cancer and several other serious diseases. The genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects of Aloe vera leaf extract (AV) were investigated using the chromosome aberrations (CAs) test for the bone marrow cells of rats, sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) and micronucleus (MN) and CAs tests for human lymphocytes, and the Ames Salmonella/microsome test system. In the bone marrow cells of rats, AV extract significantly induced structural and total CAs at all concentrations and in all treatment periods. In human peripheral lymphocytes, AV did not increase the mean SCE; however, it significantly induced the MN frequency and structural CAs. Conventional and GTC, CTC, and AgNO_3 banded karyotypes of brown hares (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778) from Turkey are described for the first time. All specimens possessed a diploid number of 2n = 48 chromosomes and a fundamental autosomal number of NFa = 88. The chromosome set consisted of 8 metacentric and submetacentric pairs and 15 subtelocentric and acrocentric pairs decreasing in size from large to small. The effects of incubation time, temperature, pH, and agitation on indole-3- acetic acid and gibberellic acid production in Aspergillus niger were studied. For indole-3-acetic acid production, 6 days of incubation at 25 °C and pH 6.0 was found to be optimum. Optimum conditions for gibberellic acid production were 12 days of incubation at 30 °C and pH 5.0. Agitation increased both indole-3-acetic acid and gibberellic acid production.

Rhizoctonia solani isolates obtained from common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were included in an AG4 anastomosis group in accordance with hyphal anastomosis. In the subgrouping of AG4 isolates, PCR-RFLP patterns in the rDNA-ITS were used. After obtaining the genomic DNA belonging to R. solani AG4, an approximately 700 bp amplification product of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region was obtained with PCR, using ITS1 and ITS4 universal primers. The PCR products were digested with MseI, HincII, AvaII, and MfeI restriction endonucleases, and different PCR-RFLP patterns were obtained for the AG4 HGI and AG4 HGII subgroups. The objective of this study was to assess the genetic diversity and genetic relationships among 59 Turkish barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) germplasm lines (maintained for scald disease resistance breeding) using sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) markers. Seventeen SRAP primer combinations produced 83 polymorphic markers, with a mean polymorphism of 73.5%. The dendrogram created based on Nei's unweighted-pair group method using arithmetic average (UPGMA) indicated that there were 4 main clusters, which was supported by principle component analysis (PCA). In this study, weekly distributions of inorganic nutrients and phytoplankton cell volumes were investigated in relation to the hydrology of the Dardanelles. The data were collected between March 2001 and March 2002. NO^{-}_{2}+NO^{-}_{3}, PO_{4}^{-3}, and SiO_4 concentrations ranged between 0.050-6.887 µM, 0.051-1.152 µM, and 0.64-10.74 µM, respectively. During the study, the highest nutrient values were measured between late fall and mid-winter. Inorganic N:P and Si:P ratios in the surface water were lower due to high PO_{4}^{-3} concentrations. This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity of 102 lines of doubled haploid wheat (obtained from CIMMYT) using the acid-PAGE method, morphological traits, and baking quality. Cluster analysis of the morphological traits separated all the genotypes into 4 groups, such that the genotypes with high yield were placed in 1 group. However, based on cluster analysis of their qualitative traits, the genotypes were classified into 3 main groups, while the genotypes with high protein content were placed in a distinct group. Two metal complexes were synthesized as [Hg(L)](ClO_4)_2 and [Cu(L)](ClO_4)2 by the template reaction between 2,6-bis(2 aminothiophenoxymethyl)pyridine and 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxaldehyde in the presence of Hg(II) and Cu(II) perchlorate salts. The structures of the compounds were elucidated by IR, 1H-NMR, MASS, and Elemental Analyses values. Cytotoxicity of the compounds were investigated by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay in normal and cancerous rat fibroblasts. Both compounds showed cytotoxicity on 2 cell lines as a dose-dependent manner. Compound [Hg(L)](ClO_4)_2 was more cytotoxic than [Cu(L)](ClO_4)2. The in vitro effect of certain fungicides, insecticides, and biopesticides on mycelial growth of Trichoderma harzianum was evaluated. Seven systemic fungicides, 2 contact fungicides, and 4 biopesticides were tested. A progressive increase in percent inhibition of radial growth in the fungus was observed as the concentrations of the fungicides increased. Among the systemic fungicides, hexaconazole was the most toxic, followed by propiconazole and triflumizole. Toxicity of the contact fungicides was lower than that of the systemic fungicides, among which copper oxychloride and copper hydroxide were highly compatible; no inhibition was observed at lower concentrations. Soil samples were collected from an industrial area in Kazanlı, Mersin, Turkey. Six heavy metals, Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, Cd, and Zn, were tested. ICP-AES analyses were carried out to detect the heavy metal levels of the soil samples. The analysis of test samples revealed high levels of Ni and Cr. A total of 272 Pseudomonas spp. and 161 Bacillus spp. strains were isolated from soils from 4 different sampling locations. Fatty acid compositions of total lipids in the muscle of 9 freshwater fish species were examined via gas chromatography. Palmitic acid and oleic acid were the predominant saturated (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in all the species analyzed. The highest value of total SFA was detected in Liza abu (48.94%). Alburnus mossulensis had the greatest percentage of total MUFA (55.56%). Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were the most abundant PUFA in all the species analyzed. Seventy soil samples were collected from 25 different plant varieties grown in fields in Aydın province. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were found in 59 soil samples; 58 of these were identified as Glomus sp. and 1 as Gigaspora sp. Due to its adaptation characteristics, growth rates, and colonization properties, Glomus sp. was selected for further study. The effects of Glomus sp. and BioOrganics (Glomus aggregatum, G. clarum, G. deserticola, G. intraradices, G. monosporus, G. mosseae, Gigaspora margarita, and Paraglomus brasilianum) on tomato, pepper, and cucumber plant development were evaluated. The antioxidant activity of the methanolic extracts of 4 plants from genus Helichrysum Mill. (Asteraceae) [H. arenarium (L.) Moench subsp. erzincanicum Davis & Kupicha, H. arenarium (L.) Moench subsp. rubicundum (C.Koch.) Davis & Kupicha, H. armenium DC. subsp. araxinum (Kirp.) Takht., and H. plicatum DC. subsp. pseudoplicatum (Nab.) Organic tobacco is a new industrial crop. Field experiments were conducted, during 2005-2006, to determine the effects of irrigation system and green manure on weed flora in organic tobacco crops (Nicotiana tabacum cv. NC 71). The experiments were designed as a split plot design with 4 replicates, 2 main plots (drip and sprinkler irrigation), and 3 sub-plots (vetch and red clover as green manure, and control). The greatest number and dry weight of weeds was observed in sprinkler irrigation. The synthesis of ethyl [3-(cyanomethyl)-5-alkyl-4H-1,2,4-triazol- 4-yl]carbamates (2a-d) was performed starting from ethyl 2-[ethoxy(4- (aryl)methylene]hydrazinecarboxylates (1a, 1b). The treatment of 2a with thiosemicarbazide afforded ethyl [3-[(5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazol- 2-yl)methyl]-5-(4-nitrophenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl]carbamates (3a), whereas compound 2b produced 5-{[4-amino-5-(4-methylphenyl)- 4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]methyl}-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine (3b) in the same reaction conditions. The treatment of tert-butyl 2-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-ethoxyethylidene]hydrazinecarboxylate (5) with malonohydrazide or cyanoacethydrazide gave the corresponding 1,2,4-triazol-ylcarbamate derivatives (6 or 9); then the hydrolysis of these compounds resulted in the formation of 3-{[4-amino-5-(4- chlorobenzyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]methyl}-5-(4-chlorobenzyl)-4H- 1,2,4-triazol-4-amine (7) and [4-amino-5-(4-chlorobenzyl)-4H- 1,2,4-triazole-3-yl]acetonitrile (10), respectively. A convenient route to synthesize some new medicinally important 7-hydroxy-3-pyrazolyl chromones (3a-i) is described. The interaction of 7-hydroxy-3-formyl chromone (1) with various substituted acetophenones and further cyclization with hydrazine hydrate in an aprotic solvent followed by condensation with 2, 3, 4, 6-tetra-o-acetyl-\alpha-dglucopyranosyl bromide afforded 2, 3, 4, 6-tetra-o-acetyl-\beta-d-glucopyranosyloxy-3-(3-aryl-1H-pyrazol-5- yl)-4H-chromen-4-ones (4a-i). Later deacetylation with anhydrous zinc acetate in methanol gave 7-o-\beta-d-glucopyranosyloxy-3-(3-aryl- 1H-pyrazol-5-yl)-4H-chromen-4-ones (5a-i). These compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial and anti-oxidant activity. The structures of these newly synthesized o-glucosides were established by IR, NMR, mass spectra, elemental analysis, and chemical analysis.

The vanadium(III) complexes of composition [VCl_{3-n}(OAr^{1,2})_n.(THF)_2] (OAr^1 = 2-phenylphenoxo and OAr^2 = 4-phenylphenoxo, THF = tetrahydrofuran; n = 1 /to 3) were prepared by in situ reaction of VCl_3.(THF)_3 with sodium salt of respective phenols in tetrahydrofuran. The complexes were characterised by elemental analysis, molar conductance, FTIR, UV-Vis, and FAB-mass spectral and magnetic studies. The thermal behaviour of some of the complexes was studied by TG-DTA. The dinuclear phenoxy bridged octahedral structures for the complexes were inferred from the spectral and magnetic studies.

The species of Gugolzia (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Pteromalidae) in Europe and Turkey were reviewed, and an identification key for differentiating the species is provided. Newly discovered diagnostic characters of the genus were added to the diagnoses given by earlier authors. Species were recorded as parasitoids of phytophagous Eurytomidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea). New host and distributions are for Gugolzia harmolitae, which was reared from Tetramesa romana feeding on shoots of Arundo donax (Poaceae), Gugolzia karadagae n.sp. from Eurytoma plotnikovi feeding on fruits of Pistacia vera together with Megastigmus pistaciae (Chalcidoidea: Torymidae) in Gaziantep province, and Gugolzia melengicia n.sp. from fruits of Pistacia terebinthi …

Data are given on the distribution of 40 species belonging to the subfamilies Exoristinae and Tachininae that were collected by the first author in Fars province, Iran, during 2006-2007. In all, 22 species were recorded for the first time from Iran and 34 species from Fars province. Erynniopsis antennata (Rondani, 1861) was reared for the first time on the host Diorhabda elongate (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Distributional data and the chorotype of all known taxa of Turkish species of the subgenus Microlaccobius Gentili, 1974 are summarized. The taxonomic position of Laccobius gracilis persicus Gentili, 1974 is discussed and L. persicus is elevated to the level of valid species and new record for the Turkish fauna. A short identification key of Turkish species of the subgenus is also given.

Histology Of The Androgenic Gland In Eriphia Verrucosa (Forskål, 1775) (Decapoda, Brachyura), Meli̇ke Erkan, Yasemi̇n Tunali, Serap Eki̇nci̇, Si̇mge Kara

This study investigated the histology of the androgenic gland in Eriphia verrucosa (Forskål, 1775). The results obtained with light microscopy show that the androgenic gland in this species consists of 2 cell types. Type 1 cells are small and do not contain a secretory product. Type 2 cells are considerably larger and may produce a proteinaceous secretion. This study identified the location and structure of the androgenic gland in Eriphia verrucosa, which is an economically important brachyuran crab, and revealed the chemical nature of the secretions produced by its cells.

Between April 2007 and October 2008 we collected 1995 horse mackerel specimens from the territorial waters of the Bulgarian Black Sea. Age, length, and weight of these specimens were determined to estimate length-weight relationships and age composition. The present study utilized otolith characterization to determine age. The sex ratio was 1:1.36686 (M:F). The prevalent age classes were 2+, 3+, and 4+. The exponent b of equation resulted in the value 3.3046, which indicates that the weight growth is positive allometric. Age, growth, length-weight relationship and reproduction were investigated for striped seabream (Lithognathus mormyrus L., 1758) collected from Beymelek Lagoon (Antalya, Turkey) between February 2006 and January 2007. The ages of striped seabream ranged from 0 to 3 years for males and from 0 to 4 years for females. Their total lengths and weights ranged between 14.4 and 26.4 cm and 42 and 297 g for males and 14.3 and 27.4 cm and 40 and 329 g for females, respectively.
