A series of solid-liquid phase change materials, thiourea derivatives, were prepared via condensation of thiourea with the respective carboxyl chlorides (lauroyl chloride, myristoyl chloride, and palmitoyl chloride) and were then characterized by using FT-IR, ^1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The thiourea derivatives (1,3-didodecanoyl thiourea, 1,3-ditetradecanoyl thiourea, and 1,3-dihexadecanoyl thiourea) were structurally symmetric and had long alkyl groups to crystallize. Thermal analysis by DSC and spectroscopic investigation by FT-IR spectroscopy were performed on the samples before and after thermal cycling tests to determine thermal reliability. Orthoptera And Mantodea Fauna Of Kazdağı (Ida) National Park With Data On The Calling Songs Of Some Bush-Crickets, Hasan Sevgi̇li̇, Ali̇ İsmet Demi̇rsoy, Yusuf Durmuş

The Orthoptera and Mantodea fauna of Kazdağı National Park (Balıkesir) were investigated. Field studies were conducted between 2004 and 2005. During this study, 34 species of Orthoptera (16 Tettigoniidae, 1 Oecanthidae, 2 Pamphagidae, 1 Tetrigidae, and 14 Acrididae) and 3 species of Mantodea were investigated. Isophya cania, Poecilimon luschani egrigozi, Anadolua schwarzi, Rhacocleis acutangula (Tettigoniidae), Paranocaracris rubripes burri (Pamphagidae), and one recently described species, Chorthippus (Glyptobothrus) kazdaghensis (Acrididae), are endemic taxa. Metrioptera (Broughtonia) arnoldi,, known from the Balkan fauna until now, is a new record for Turkish fauna. Fetal electrocardiograms (FECG) contain important indications about the health and condition of the fetus. In this respect, it is crucial to apply a robust algorithm to ECG data for extraction of the FECG signal. Most of the independent component analysis (ICA) algorithms used for this purpose rely on simple statistical models. Such algorithms can fail to separate desired signals when the assumed statistical model is inaccurate. Statistical models can be estimated accurately using kernel density estimation methods. Fruit And Seed Morphology Of The Fumaria L. Species (Papaveraceae) Of Iran, Fatemeh Ebrahimzadeh Araii, Maryam Keshavarzi, Masoud Sheidaii, Parinaz Ghadam

The macro and micro fruit and seed morphology and surface ornamentations of 21 populations of 6 Fumaria L. species were investigated using stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy. These data are shown to support data from the general morphology. The results indicate that the fruit and seed characters of the genus Fumaria are valuable for taxonomic applications and are useful for classification. F. officinalis show a different shape in their fruit. The close relationships are observed for F. parviflora and F. vaillantii. F. indica, as a hybrid between F. asepala and F. parviflora, shows intermediate micro-morphological features.

In this article, an attempt has been made to establish the qualitative composition of macromycetes in the communities of scale-leaf juniper, Juniperus excelsa M.Bieb. and J. foetidissima Willd., distributed in Turkey. A total of 127 species of macrofungi were registered, 2 belonging to Ascomycota and 125 to Basidiomycota. Of those, 69 species were collected in Juniperus excelsa stands, 23 in J. foetidissima stands, and 35 species in both juniper stands. Ocimum basilicum L. seedlings were exposed to different concentrations of Cr (0-8 mg L^{-1} of Cr^{3+}) to evaluate the cellular localisation of chromium, plant accumulating capacity, and potential cellular defence mechanisms against Cr stress. Dried plant tissues (roots and shoots) were exposed to X-ray microanalysis for element determination (including Cr, Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, and Mo). Results showed that the highest amount of Cr had accumulated in the roots of the plants treated with 8 mg L^{-1} of Cr^{3+}, while less Cr was transported to the shoots. The material of this study comprises macrofungi specimens collected from different localities in Kemaliye district (Erzincan, Turkey) in 2006 and 2007. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 106 taxa under 35 families belonging to the classes Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes are described: 3 of them, namely Psathyrella panaeoloides (Maire) Arnolds, Galerina stylifera var. stylifera (G.F.Atk.) A.H.Sm. & Singer, and Inocybe amblyspora Kühner, are new records for Turkey.

Conservation of genetic diversity is important for continued evolution of populations to new environments, as well as continued availability of traits of interest in genetic improvement programs. Rapidly changing climates present new threats to the conservation of forest genetic resources. We can no longer assume that in situ reserves will continue to preserve existing genetic diversity. Management of reserves should become more active. In some reserves, existing genetic diversity should be preserved by creating stands that are more resistant to threats using silvicultural treatments such as thinning and prescribed burning. The species of the "Pentapera group" are distinguished from the rest of the European and Mediterranean Erica L. species by having 5 corolla lobes and sepals instead of 4, and 10 stamens instead of 8. The genus Pentapera Klotzsch was proposed for these taxa but recent studies regards it as part of Erica. A New Variety Of Bromus (Poaceae) From Turkey: Bromus Psammophilus Var. Robustus Var. Nova, Hali̇l Çakan, Hildemar Scholz

Bromus psammophilus P.M.Sm., a rare endemic species, was known only from the type collection on the coastal dunes of Çukurova Delta (Adana, Turkey). Specimens belonging to the new and typical varieties of this taxon were collected from sand dunes and dune slacks where the type specimen was collected the first time. Bromus psammophilus var. robustus Çakan & H.Scholz was described as a new variety; in examination of the newly collected specimens, it differs from the typical variety by its longer spikelets, higher flower numbers in spikelets, and glabrous glumes.

Phytosociological analysis performed over 2005 to 2009 revealed that Cassia occidentalis L. is a dominant species at 3 of 4 sites in Agra district, India, that were previously observed to be dominated by heavy populations of Parthenium hysterophorus L. This paper presents a systematic revision of Fritillaria L. (Liliaceae) in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The genus used to contain 22 taxa in the Mediterranean region, but in this study it has been evaluated on the basis of 23 taxa. We concluded that F. armena Boiss. and F. zagrica Stapf are synonyms of F. pinardii Boiss. Phylogenetic orders of F. forbesii Rix and F. kittaniae Sorger in the Flora of Turkey were changed. A method was developed for the simultaneous determination of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and kinetin, based on the oxidation of both phytohormones at a pencil-lead graphite electrode. The electrochemical behaviors were examined by cyclic, linear sweep, and square-wave voltammetry in the pH range of 2-12. In Britton-Robinson buffer solution (pH 6), the oxidation peaks of IAA and kinetin are well separated by square-wave voltammetry. By adding an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecylsulfate) in a concentration of 50 \mu M, the sensitivity of kinetin was increased significantly without reducing the resolution. A set of ester and amide derivatives of some acidic NSAIDs, including ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and mefenamic acid (1-3), were synthesized and evaluated for their in vivo analgesic and antiinflammatory activity using the p-benzoquinone-induced writhing test and the carrageenan-induced paw edema model, respectively. Among the synthesized compounds, ester derivatives of ketoprofen showed especially potent analgesic and antiinflammatory activity as compared to the parent drug. In vitro chemical stability studies revealed that ester and amide derivatives were chemically stable in simulated gastric (pH 1.2) and intestinal fluids (pH 6.8). Urginea maritima (Um) is a plant native to especially Turkey and the Mediterranean area. In this study, we investigated whether Um extract exerted cytotoxicity on cancer cells. Materials and methods: We made various extracts of Um. These extracts in varying concentrations were added to an A549 NSCLC cell culture, alone or with gemcitabine and/or cisplatin. Growth inhibition was tested by the MTT assay and an Annexin V-FITC apoptosis detection kit Results: The onion Um extract (1 µg/mL) was more cytotoxic than cisplatin (1 µg/mL), gemcitabine (1 nm/mL), and leaf Um extract (1 µg/mL) with P < 0.001, P = 0.097, and P < 0.001, respectively. The efficacy of Um extract was further improved by the addition of an antioxidant cocktail to an IC_{50} value of 0.02 µg/mL. Conclusion: Um extract has been shown for the first time to be a strong candidate for drug development in solid tumors. Our studies continue to further define the specific antitumor compound(s) in this extract.

The aim of this study was to produce of ex vivo oral mucosal equivalent. The continuous stratified layer of human oral keratinocytes was grown on a cadaveric human dermal matrix in a defined culture medium without a feeder layer. The present study was conducted to fulfill the objective of investigating the probability of an association between PON1 phenotype distribution and headache duration in patients suffering from MWoA. To investigate serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and lipid hydroperoxide levels in pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia. Materials and methods: Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and lipid hydroperoxide levels were assessed for pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia (n = 50) and controls (n = 70). Serum basal and salt-stimulated paraoxonase, and arylesterase activities were measured spectrophotometrically. To examine the effect of smoking on normal buccal mucosa cytomorphologically. Materials and methods: Forty individuals aged between 40 and 60, comprising 23 smokers (14 male, 9 female) and 17 and non-smokers (10 male, 7 female), were included in the study. To investigate the effect of leptin treatment on circulating inflammatory cytokines and on tissue damage in experimental rat model of gram-negative sepsis. Materials and methods: Adult male Wistar rats, 28 in total, were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 7): sham, leptin, sepsis, and sepsis group treated with leptin (sepsis+leptin).
