A Contribution To Taxonomy Of Centaurea Including Psephellus (Asteraceae) Based On Anatomical And Molecular Data, Özhan Aydi̇n, Kami̇l Çoşkunçelebi̇, Mutlu Gültepe, Murat Erdem Güzel

Seven Centaurea L. s.l (Asteraceae) taxa endemic to Turkey were examined in terms of anatomical and molecular aspects to contribute to their taxonomic positions. Numerical analysis of the 13 anatomical traits showed that average row number of collenchyma and the arrangements of the vascular bundles in the stem, leaf type, and abaxial surface of leaf epidermal tissue were important to determine the investigated taxa. It was also found that the 7 investigated taxa were grouped into 2 distinct clusters based on anatomical traits and combined nrDNAITS/cpDNA data.

The levels of inorganic (Na^+, K^+, Ca^+^2, Mg^+^2, Cl^-) and organic (proline, carbohydrates) osmolytes and quaternary ammonium compounds were measured in 3 endemic Limonium Mill. species [L. lilacinum (Boiss. & Bal.) Wagenitz, L. iconicum (Boiss. & Heldr.) Kuntze, and L. anatolicum Hedge] of Lake Tuz in central Anatolia, Turkey. Samples were collected between May and October from plants growing in their natural habitats. Soil samples also were taken from the plant root zone at the time of plant sampling. The current investigation is concerned with the histological features of Senna occidentalis (L.) Link (coffee senna plant). The anatomical structure of different vegetative and reproductive organs was investigated weekly or fortnightly, according to the investigated organ, throughout the growing season. Organs studied included the main root, main stem (represented by shoot apex, apical, and median internodes), different foliage leaves developed on the main stem and on lateral shoots (including lamina and petiole), epidermal peel and trichomes, flower buds, fruits, and seeds. Bryophyte Flora Of Melendiz Mountain In Turkey, Merve Can Gözcü, Recep Kara, Tülay Ezer

In this study, the bryophyte flora of Melendiz Mountain (Niğde Province) was investigated. In total, 99 taxa were found in this area. Of these, 4 taxa were liverworts and 95 taxa were mosses. According to Henderson's grid-square system, 39 moss taxa for the B8 square and 12 moss taxa for the C13 square are new records. Among them, Syntrichia caninervis Mitt. var. abranchesii (Luisier) R.H.Zander was recorded for the first time, and Cinclidotus pachylomoides Bizot and Orthotrichum sprucei Mont. were recorded for the second time in Turkey. Papaver bracteatum Lindl., P. orientale L., and P. pseudo-orientale (Fedde) Medw., species of section Oxytona Bernh. in the genus Papaver L., are found widely in the native flora of Turkey. They are commercially important for their high alkaloid content. Because genus Papaver section Oxytona has similar morphological characters, it is not easy to distinguish these species. We used the inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) molecular marker system to determine the molecular characterisation of this section. Bellevalia malatyaensis Uzunh. & H.Duman is described and illustrated as a new species from East Anatolia. The distribution area of this species is restricted to Erkenek (Malatya)-Gölbaşı (Adıyaman). It grows in open areas of Pinus brutia Ten. forest. It resembles Bellevalia gracilis Feinbrun, but differs in scapose habitus, leaves, and characters of the capsule. The morphological diagnostic characters and karyological features are discussed.

Azadirachta indica A.Juss. and Melia azedarach L. are 2 closely related species from Meliaceae that are considered noteworthy medicinal plants in the world and have very often been confused with each other. Various evaluations like organoleptic and microscopic characteristics, preliminary phytochemical screening, and fluorescence analysis were carried out on the pulp, husk, leaves, and seeds of both plants in powdered form to establish appropriate data that can aid rapid and easy differentiation between them. In this study, we researched the main aquatic vegetation (AV) species and their orthophosphate and turbidity removal efficiencies in the Lower Kelkit Basin of Turkey. We chose an experimental area (1650 m^2) in the field and determined orthophosphate (mg/L) and turbidity (NTU) variables at the charging and discharging points between November 2005 and March 2006. Astragalus silifkeense Dinç, Aytaç & Doğu, sp. nov. (Fabaceae, sect. Astragalus Bunge) is described as a new species from Silifke (Mersin Province), in southern Anatolia, Turkey. The new species is closely related to A. columnaris Boiss., endemic to Denizli in western Anatolia, and A. gilvus Boiss. in Ankara Province, Turkey. This work extends knowledge about the distribution of secretory structures (black nodules, translucent glands, and type A and B secretory canals) to other species of the genus Hypericum L., as only H. perforatum L. appears to have been widely investigated. Moreover, the current study was extended to include leaf vascular patterns. Identification Of Benzoin Obtained From Calli Of Styrax Officinalis By Hplc, Hati̇ce Demi̇ray, Ayli̇n Eşi̇z Dereboylu, Zeki̇ye Işin Yazici, Fati̇h Karabey

The stem tissue of Styrax officinalis L. distributed in West Anatolia was induced with agents such as boric acid and cocarboxylase (thiamine diphosphate), extensive stimulators of resin channels, in order to increase the amount of benzoin volatile oil. While the benzoin content was 120% in the induction medium to which excess boron and niacin were added, it increased to 231% when cocarboxylase (thiamine diphosphate) was added to the medium. Benzoin content of Styrax from petiole calli was 166%. HPLC-DAD results revealed that benzoin resin was present in 90% of the stems of Styrax officinalis distributed in West Anatolia. The major …

In Algeria, it is locally found on the northern cliffs of the National Park of Gouraya (Kabylia). The aim of this study is to compare the populations of E. cheiri identified in Algeria with those found in Mediterranean France. Campanula aktascii Aytaç & H.Duman (Campanulaceae) has been described as a new species. The diagnostic characters of C. aktascii were compared and discussed with its resembling species and the ecology and phenology of the new species were presented. Onopordum rhodense Boiss. ex Rech.f. (Asteraceae) and Daucus conchitae W.Greuter (Apiaceae) have been reported as a new records from Antalya (South Anatolia) for Turkey. The distribution map and Red List categories of these taxa according to the IUCN were also given.

Short-term changes in plant species number, cover, frequency, and composition were studied along an altitudinal gradient crossing 4 GLORIA summits (from 2240 m to 3024 m a.s.l.) from the treeline ecotone to the subnival zone in the Central Caucasus. Large-scale (summit area) and small-scale (16 plots of 1 m^{2}/summit) patterns were monitored in 2001. Recording was repeated in 2008. During the monitoring period, the average soil temperature and growing-degree days did not significantly increase. After 7 years, a revisitation of the summit area revealed a considerable increase of species richness, especially at the lower alpine zone (CP1 and CP2 summits). …

The Nas hypothesis for the development of a micropropagation medium offers a less time-consuming and a less laborious approach. Euglenozoa Occurring In Adzopé Reservoir, Côte D’Ivoire, Ble Alexis Tardy Kouassi, Allassane Ouattara, Kouhete Philippe Da

The Euglenozoa flora of the Adzope Reservoir in Côte d'Ivoire was investigated from January to December 2005. The species composition of the assemblage was compiled, accompanied by illustrations. Forty-four taxa were identified in the temporal survey. Ten taxa (22.22%) are new for Côte d'Ivoire. The taxonomic structure presents 22.32% of the species common to the freshwater of West Africa, with most of the taxa (89.5%) found to be cosmopolitan. An endemic taxon, Trachelomonas pisciformis var. bicoronata Coute & Iltis (Euglenaceae), was observed. An extracellular multiple form of endoxylanase was isolated from the xylanolytic complex of Aspergillus niger B03. The enzyme was purified to a homogenous form using ultrafiltration, anion exchange chromatography, and gel filtration. It was a nonglycosylated protein with a molecular weight of 20,000 Da as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and 21,000 Da as determined by gel filtration. The optimal pH for the enzyme action was 5.0 and the optimal temperature was 55 °C. Endoxylanase stability was significantly improved in the presence of glycerol and sorbitol. Lipase production was examined with 3 strains of Yarrowia lipolytica: NBRC 1658, IFO 1195, and a local strain. All strains were obtained from Hacettepe University's Department of Food Engineering. The addition of nitrogen and carbon sources and the effects of initial pH and temperature parameters were studied. For all 3 strains, the growth temperature range was 20-40 °C, and maximum growth was determined at 30 °C. The initial pH range was 6-9 for growth and 3-6 for lipase production. GJB2 encodes connexin 26, a gap junction protein that is assumed to be a component of the potassium recycling pathway in the inner ear. Loss or malfunction of these gap junctions, as might be reflected by mutations in GJB2, may disrupt potassium movement from the hair cells through the supporting cell network to the endolymph, leading to hearing impairment. Salvia L. species have been used for the treatment of various inflammatory ailments in traditional medicine. In order to evaluate this ethnobotanical information, water, methanol, n-butanol, acetone, and chloroform extracts from 3 Salvia species (S. fruticosa, S. verticillata, and S. trichoclada) were screened for their anti-inflammatory activity using in vivo experimental models in rats. Beta-carotene and silymarin have antioxidant properties against oxidative damage and are used as dietary supplements. The aim of this study was to assess the protective effects of \beta-carotene and silymarin on healthy human lymphocytes exposed to L-arginine-induced oxidative damage. Study samples were lymphocyte cultures set up from venous blood obtained from 6 healthy individuals (3 males and 3 females). Oxidative DNA damage was induced by L-arginine. \beta-Carotene and silymarin were added to the cultures as antioxidants to observe their protective effects, if any. Turkish Journal of Biology

The villages of Ilıca District in Erzurum Province, Turkey, were surveyed in terms of plants and animals used traditionally for medicinal purposes. Plants were compiled according to their families, botanical names, local names, usages, and applications. A total of 70 plant species belonging to 29 families are used by village people to treat a wide range of complaints, such as hemorrhoids, urinary system infections, stomach disorders, respiratory diseases, skin diseases, rheumatism, and jaundice. In addition, 3 animal species are used for the treatment of some diseases. The collected data were compared with those formerly recorded.

Many species of the genus Astragalus have been long used in folk medicine because of their biological properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of extracts from the leaves of wild Astragalus gombiformis Pomel. Antibacterial activity was assayed against several common human pathogenic bacterial strains using the paper disk-agar diffusion method. Cytotoxicity was measured against human lung carcinoma cells using the colorimetric MTT assay. The strongest cytotoxic activity against the human A549 lung epithelial carcinoma cell line was detected for dichloromethane extracts at IC_{50} = 85 ± 21.7 µg/mL. The best incubation time …

Growth parameters and the reproduction period of white bream (Blicca bjoerkna L. 1758) sampled from Sapanca Lake were determined monthly between November 2000 and October 2001. Three hundred and fifty white bream specimens caught ranged in age from 1^+ to 9^+ years, and the majority of the samples consisted of individuals of the 5^+-year-old age group. Low phosphate solubility is one of the most important factors limiting the plant growth in Indian soils. Many microorganisms can enhance phosphate solubility, but little is known about the magnitude of their phosphorus-solubilizing ability. Thermopsis turcica is an endemic species of Turkey popularly known as Eber Sarısı or Piyam; it is a member of the Thermopsis genus, which contains plants considered to be medicinal throughout the world. The effects of seasonal variation on the fatty acid composition of total lipid, triacylglycerol, and phospholipid in the dorsal muscle of Capoeta trutta were assessed by gas chromatographic method. A total of 18 different fatty acids were determined in the composition of C. trutta. The variations in fatty acid composition of total lipid, triacylglycerol, and phospholipid were recorded throughout the seasons.
