Turkish Journal of Biology

Bacteria resistance to antibiotics has become a worldwide problem impacted partly by antibiotics use in livestock production. The present study investigated the pattern and mechanisms of resistance in 21 bacteria species isolated from a river used as a waste-dump by a poultry farm in Ogbomoso, southwestern Nigeria. Bacteria were isolated on nutrient agar supplemented with 50 µg/mL of tetracycline, their identities were determined by PCR amplification, and sequencing of their 16s rRNA genes and their susceptibility to 6 antimicrobials determined by broth dilution. The molecular basis of resistance among the isolates was also investigated by the PCR amplification of class …

Plant And Insect Diversity Along An Experimental Gradient Of Larch-Birch Mixtures In Chinese Boreal Forests, Jing Li, Juan Shi, Youqing Luo, Kari Heliovaara Jan 2012

Plant And Insect Diversity Along An Experimental Gradient Of Larch-Birch Mixtures In Chinese Boreal Forests, Jing Li, Juan Shi, Youqing Luo, Kari Heliovaara

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Maintaining and increasing biodiversity level especially in pure plantations is one important way to improve the resistance of forests to pests in Chinese boreal forests. The present study tested the hypothesis that the increased degree of tree species mixture (quantified by the stem proportion of Betula platyphylla Suk. and Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) can affect the species richness and diversity of understory and insects. Twenty-one plots, ranging from pure larch stand to pure birch stand, were sampled in several thinned forests in a Chinese boreal forest area. Data of environmental factors, understory plant species and insect assemblage were collected from …

Artificial Neural Network Modeling Of Process And Product Indices In Deep Bed Drying Of Rough Rice, Mojtaba Tohidi, Morteza Sadeghi, Seyed Rasoul Mousavi, Seyed Ahmad Mireei

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study aimed to model the performance indices of deep bed drying of rough rice using artificial neural networks (ANNs), compare the ANN approach to the multivariate regression method, and determine the sensitivity of the ANN model to the input variables. The effects of air temperature, air velocity, and air relative humidity on drying kinetics, product output rate (POR), evaporation rate (ER), and percentage of kernel cracking (KC) were investigated. To predict the dependent parameters, 3 well-known networks, namely the multilayer perceptron, generalized feed forward (GFF), and modular neural network, were examined. The GFF networks with the Levenberg-Marquardt learning algorithm, …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A series of 3-[(4-substitutedpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]-1H-indole derivatives were synthesized, and their structures were confirmed by spectral analysis. All the compounds were tested for their cytotoxic activity in vitro against 3 human tumor cell lines: human liver (HUH7), breast (MCF7), and colon (HCT116). Among the designed derivatives, most of the compounds showed significant cytotoxicity against liver and colon cancer cell lines with lower IC_{50} concentrations than the standard drug 5-fluorouracil. Compound 3s, with 3,4-dichlorophenyl substituent on the piperazine ring, was the most active in suppressing the growth of all screened cancer cells.

Determination Of Lidocaine Based On Electrocatalysis Of A Chemically Modified Electrode, Gamze Tan, Gülçi̇n Bolat, Mehmet Ali̇ Onur, Serdar Abaci

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The potential application of biochemically modified electrodes was investigated for construction of a drug biosensor. The electrocatalytic response of lidocaine was examined through modified electrodes using the electron transfer ability of hemoglobin (Hb) immobilized on gold film modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). According to the results of voltammetric studies, Au/MPA/Hb electrodes exhibited high sensitivity and good electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of lidocaine, motivating us to construct drug biosensors. With this study, a new electroanalytical procedure is proposed for the determination of lidocaine level in medical applications or therapeutic formulations containing lidocaine as the active …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Salt stress is an important environmental stress. Plants cope with salt stress with different strategies. In this study the effects of 2 different arbuscular mycorrhiza species (Glomus mosseae and G. intraradices) on some biochemical parameters in pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Cumaovası) exposed to long term salt stress were studied. It was found that mycorrhizal inoculation increased RWC, P, total chlorophyll, and carotenoid content of pepper plants during salt application. The enzyme activities changed depending on the enzyme and salt stress application. The lowest MDA content was found in the plants inoculated with G. intraradices; however, there was no …

Drought stress is one of the most important yield-reducing factors in crop production. Sunflower, an oilseed crop, is severely affected by abiotic stress. In this study, 2 sunflower cultivars (Musala and Aydın) were evaluated in terms of various biochemical and physiological responses under 2 different polyethylene glycol-mediated drought stress conditions. Stress-determining parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H_{2}O_{2}), and proline contents were determined. Both cultivars showed similar responses at osmotic potentials of both -0.4 and -0.8 MPa. Aydın was less affected than Musala under these stress conditions. MDA, H_{2}O_{2}, and proline levels were similar at both -0.4 and -0.8 …
