Turkish Journal of Zoology

Zooplankton composition and abundance were investigated seasonally at 6 sites in Lake Karaboğaz in relation to some physicochemical conditions. A total of 63 taxa were identified, among them 51 species of rotifers, 8 cladocerans, and 4 copepods. Rotifera represented the predominant component (79% of the total community), followed by nauplii, cladocerans, and copepods (15%, 5%, and 1%, respectively). The average total zooplankton abundance ranged from 9603 to 22,968 ind/m^3. The maximum and the minimum densities were measured in June and August of 2009, respectively. Some aspects of the reproductive biology of Sepia orbignyana, such as fecundity, spawning strategies, and gonad histology, have been studied in 1048 specimens (538 males and 510 females) caught during trawl surveys from May 2008 to April 2009 in the Aegean Sea. The length at 50% maturity was estimated as 50 mm for males and 70 mm for females. The smallest mature female had a mantle length (ML) of 36 mm; the smallest mature male had a 32-mm ML. This study is based upon material of the family Dermestidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 1965 and 2012. The study resulted in the recording for the Turkish fauna of 28 species of 6 genera belonging to 3 subfamilies (Attageninae, Dermestinae, Megatominae) within the family Dermestidae. Among them, Attagenus unicolor unicolor (Brahm, 1791), Anthrenus scrophulariae scrophulariae (Linnaeus, 1758), and Anthrenus goliath Saulcy in Mulsant & Rey, 1868 have been found to be the most abundant and widespread species. A 2-year study of the food habits of the Persian leopard was conducted in Sarigol National Park in northeastern Iran, North Khorasan Province. Based on an analysis of 52 leopard scats, the principal prey was wild sheep (Ovis orientalis: prey frequency of occurrence = 61.5%; prey relative frequency of occurrence = 47.05%; relative biomass = 53.96%), followed by wild pig (Sus scrofa: frequency = 23.07%; relative frequency = 17.64%; relative biomass = 25.38%) and wild goat (Capra aegagrus: frequency = 13.46%; relative frequency = 10.29%; relative biomass = 6.64%). In this paper we summarize the knowledge on earthworm diversity in the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina Mountains) based on new findings and published data in order to establish the first list of known earthworm taxa from the entire area of the Balkan Mountains. During investigations in the western part of the Balkan Mountains (western Stara Planina Mountains), 24 earthworm species were recorded altogether. In this paper, the authors report the discovery of Sphedanolestes sanguineus (Fabricius, 1794) in Turkey, a new finding for Asian fauna, and give an annotated checklist of Reduviidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) for this country. Stenolemus novaki Horváth, 1888, Holotrichius apterus Jakovlev, 1879, Holotrichius denudatus A. Costa, 1842, Holotrichius rotundatus Stål, 1874, Rhynocoris annulatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Rhynocoris transitus Hoberlandt, 1952, and Pygolampis bidentata (Goeze, 1778) are little known species from Turkey. Typhlops vermicularis (Merrem, 1820) is one of the cosmopolitan species of the genus Typhlops that occupies a vast range of different localities from North Africa to western Afghanistan. In this study, different populations of T. vermicularis were investigated to clarify if there was any degree of geographic variation in this taxon throughout the studied range. For this purpose, 103 specimens of this taxon belonging to 12 populations from all over Iran, Turkey, and Turkmenistan were studied. This study is based on Empis and Rhamphomyia (Diptera: Empididae) specimens collected from the Marmara Region between the years 2008 and 2010. Out of a total of 28 species that were found in this study, 14 species are new records for the Turkish fauna. Distributions of these species in Turkey have been mapped, and the Palaearctic distributions were given. Geographic distributions of all species are further discussed.

Despite the ecological importance and globally threatened status of freshwater bivalves, the freshwater mussel fauna of Turkey has hitherto received little attention. The aim of this study was to describe the ecology of freshwater mussels of the Lake Sapanca basin (northwest Turkey) to provide baseline data against which to measure future trends. A total of 625 fish belonging to 25 species were sampled from the coasts of Trabzon, Rize, and Artvin provinces and examined parasitologically. Cytogenetic characteristics of Devario aequipinnatus (McClelland, 1839) and Devario yuensis (Arunkumar and Tombi, 1998) from northeast India were studied by examining metaphase chromosome spreads from gill, epithelial, and kidney cells. The diploid chromosome numbers of both species were 2n = 50. This work attempted to evaluate the rotifer species diversity indices of Camp Balloki Water Park and infer the state of the water according to rotifers and physicochemical parameters. The diversity indices, species richness, and evenness were assessed every month. The Shannon–Weaver index indicated that this habitat had great diversity of rotifers throughout the year. These results were supported by the Simpson dominance, diversity, and reciprocal indices. Water and plankton samples were taken monthly from January 2006 to December 2006. In total, 38 rotifer species of 20 genera and 13 families were identified. Brachionus, Lecane, and Trichocerca dominated the locality. Rotifer …

A symmetric 3-layer slab waveguide with a left-handed material as a guiding layer is examined analytically for cover refractive index detection. The TM mode dispersion relation of the proposed waveguide is investigated. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor to changes in the cover refractive index and the power flowing within each layer are presented. Some unusual features are found; for example, the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is negative. Moreover, the sensitivity improvement compared with the conventional 3-layer waveguide sensor is approximately a factor of 6.

This study aimed to identify phenotypic and genotypic resistance profiles of bacteria isolated from soil and manure samples obtained from a farm where tetracycline and tylosin were used extensively. Samples were collected from the manure and soil, before and after manure application. All of the 151 bacteria were identified based on BLAST results. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined by agar dilution and E-test methods. Class-specific primers were used to amplify 6 erythromycin and 7 tetracycline resistance (Tc^r) genes for 46 tetracycline- and 18 erythromycin-resistant isolates. Oral Abscess Associated With Cranial Tooth Loss In Green Iguana (Iguana Iguana), Tzvetan Chaprazov, Rosen Dimitrov, Kamelia Stamatova Yovcheva

The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and results of treatment of an iguana’s oral abscess. A case of unilateral oral abscesses with tooth loss in a male green iguana (Iguana iguana) was presented. Gingival necrosis and a pocket of caseous yellow-gray pus were visible in the soft tissues. Some cranial teeth were found loose within the necrotic tissue. Radiographic study showed decreased bone density. Treatment of the abscess involved opening up the pus-filled abscess and manually cleaning it out. The bacteriology confirmed a culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa sensitive to enrofloxacin, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol.

Morphological revision and phylogenetic analysis of Stachys L. sect. Eriostomum (Hoffmanns. & Link) Dumort. (Lamiaceae) based on nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) sequences were conducted. Morphological analysis confirmed the previous arrangements of 3 subsections, i.e. Germanicae R.Bhattacharjee, Creticae R.Bhattacharjee, and Spectabiles R.Bhattacharjee, while suggesting some status changes and new records that were also confirmed by the phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic analysis suggested, however, some arrangements different from those indicated by morphology. The petal width; sepal, pistil, and stamen lengths; and changes in pollen sizes associated with heterostyly of different morphs in populations of Linum aretioides Boiss. were investigated. Fruit sets were compared in 2 populations and it was investigated whether the Bozdağ population has a heteromorphic incompatibility system. It was observed that the stamen lengths of thrum morphs of Bozdağ were shorter than those of thrum morphs of Babadağ. The goal of this work was to study the stimulating effects of mannan and pectin on the biosynthesis of hypericins in in vitro seedlings of Hypericum adenotrichum Spach. Seedlings of H. adenotrichum were grown on a modified MS medium containing mannan (10, 50, and 100 mg/L) or pectin (10, 50, and 100 mg/L) for 15 and 30 days. Seedlings of H. adenotrichum were extracted with methanol. The methanol extracts of the seedlings were analysed by HPLC to investigate the changes in hypericin and pseudohypericin levels. A comparative foliar epidermal micromorphology of 5 species of Bauhinia L. belonging to family Leguminosae (Fabaceae) was conducted with a view to elucidating their taxonomic significance and presenting complementary data to aid in the identification of the species. The epidermal cells in all species were polygonal with straight walls except in B. tomentosa L., which had an undulating outline. The stoma types were mainly anisocytic, anomocytic, and paracytic. Archaeobotanical Studies At The Urartian Site Of Ayanis In Van Province, Eastern Turkey, Tuğba Solmaz, Emel Oybak Dönmez

Archaeobotanical macro remains recovered from the Ayanis fortress and the outer town of the Urartian period of the Iron Age (685-645 BC), located in the area of Van (Turkey), were investigated. Most of the remains were charred due to fire. Large quantities of Hordeum vulgare L. (hulled barley), Panicum miliaceum L. (broomcorn millet), and Setaria italica (L.) P.Beauvois (foxtail millet) were found at the study site, indicating the storage of agricultural surplus. Other types of cereal remains were also recorded, including Triticum aestivum L. Atmospheric pollen grains of Kuşadası were captured using Durham samplers and investigated in 2005. The total number of pollen grains and the pollen grains/cm^2 were calculated from slides that were changed weekly. During the study period a total of 12,980 pollen grains/cm^2 belonging to 44 identified taxa and unidentified pollen grains were recorded at 2 stations. At the first station (S1), 7346 pollen grains were counted per cm^2, while only 5634 pollen grains were counted at the second station (S2). Polyphenol profiles can suffer quali-quantitative modifications as the plant modifies its phenological condition. The objective of this work was to determine if there is a rhythm of production in the synthesis of polyphenols according to the phenological condition in the leaves, roots, and rhizomes of Smilax campestris Griseb. The plant material analysed corresponded to individuals of a colony of S. campestris collected in different phenological conditions. Standard methodology was used for the chromatographic profiles of flavonols (kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, and their glycosides) and proanthocyanidins (procyanidin and propelargonidin) and quantification of total phenol, condensed tannins, and flavonols. The moss flora of Artvin Province (Ardanuç, Şavşat, Borçka, Murgul, and Arhavi districts) in Turkey was studied between 2009 and 2011. A total of 167 moss taxa (belonging to 80 genera and 33 families) were recorded within the study area. Among these, 3 species [Dicranella schreberiana (Hedw.) Dixon, Dicranodontium asperulum (Mitt.) Broth., and Campylopus pyriformis (Schultz) Brid.] are new records from the investigated area for the moss flora of Turkey. The coast of Pakistan (North Arabian Sea) is under the influence of the seasonal cycle of monsoons, which may result in 2 periods of elevated phytoplankton productivity, one during the north-east monsoon (December-February) and the other during the south-west monsoon (May-September). In the present study, elevated primary productivity in the Miani Hor Lagoon and adjacent open sea off Pakistan was found during the south-west monsoon (May-September) and spring inter-monsoon (March-April). Scotomyces subviolaceus (Peck) Jülich, Geoglossum lineare Hakelier, and Chlorencoelia versiformis (Pers.) J.R.Dixon were recorded for the first time in Turkey. The new taxa are described and illustrated. Scotomyces Jülich and Geoglossum Pers. are also new records at genus level.
