Changes In Body Mass Of Postweaning Juveniles Of The Edible Dormouse, Glis Glis (L.), In Captivity, Miroslaw Jurczyszyn, Anna Marchewka, Agata Czapracka, Lidia Karminska
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Edible dormice have to accumulate an adequate amount of body fat before hibernation. Because young dormice are born late in the season, they have a relatively short time for prehibernation fattening. The aim of our study was a) to determine what body mass juveniles reach prior to hibernation, and b) to examine patterns of mass gain in juvenile dormice with unlimited food supply. Dormice were kept in outdoor cages, fitted with wooden boxes and with the floor covered with soil suitable for hibernation. They were provided with water and fed ad libitum. They were weighed every 5-8 days. Of 34 …

The Evolutionary Trend Of Platform Denticulation In Middle Triassic Acuminate Gondolellidae (Conodonta), Pablo Plasencia, Ali̇ Murat Kiliç, Aymon Baud, Milan Sudar, Francis Hirsch
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Acuminate Middle-Late Triassic Gondolellidae are characterized by an ellipsoid platform with a central to posterior amygdaloid basal cavity and an octomembrate apparatus of gondolelloid affinity. Starting with a neospathodiform proteromorph during the Anisian, their anagenetic lineage developed during the Fassanian, Longobardian, and Julian, ending in another neospathodiform proteromorph. As the increase in complexity in the platform denticulation is an important evolutionary trend, three new genera are proposed: Guexispathodus n. gen., Marquezella n. gen., and Kirilella n. gen., which, together with Pseudofurnishius and Mosherella, represent the subfamily Marquezellinae n. subfam.

Potential Distribution Of The Guava Psyllid Triozoida Limbata (Hemiptera, Psylloidea), Today And In Global Climate Change Scenarios, Dalva Queiroz, Marcos Silveira Wrege, Talita Benedcta Santos Künast, Marilice Cordeiro Garrastazu, Daniel Burckhardt
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The jumping plant-louse Triozoida limbata is monophagous on guava (Psidium guajava), inducing leaf galls. Guava is planted today in warmer regions around the world but T. limbata is restricted to Central and South America. Recently, the latter has become a key pest in commercial plantations in Brazil (Pernambuco and São Paulo). Modeling of potential distributions is a good tool for developing control strategies of insect pests. Based on distributional data from the Americas, we created models for the psyllids for the present and future using different scenarios of climate change. The OpenModeller eco-niche modeling program was used with the Environmental …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the molecular pathways that play main roles in breast cancer regulation are still not completely understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and transcription factors (TFs) are important regulators of gene expression. It is important to unravel the relation of TFs, miRNAs, and their targets within regulatory networks to clarify the processes that cause breast cancer and the progression of it. In this study, mRNA and miRNA expression studies including breast tumors and normal samples were extracted from the GEO microarray database. Two independent mRNA studies and a miRNA study were selected and reanalyzed. …

Insect pests are among the major constraints rendering drastic decreases in crop yield. The expression of stacked insecticidal genes in crops can lead to resistance durability and can delay the development of resistance in target insect pests. The present study was designed to introduce an insect resistance trait in locally cultivated Turkish tobacco cultivars (Basma and Nail) with pyramided insecticidal genes. Agrobacterium strain LBA4404 harboring plasmid pKGH4 with cry1Ac and cry2A genes under the control of 35S promoter was used to infect leaf discs of both cultivars; plasmid also contained uidA within the T-DNA region for earlier screening of putative …

The Ciliopathy Gene Product Cep290 Is Required For Primary Cilium Formation And Microtubule Network Organization, Eli̇f Nur Firat Karalar
Turkish Journal of Biology
The mammalian centrosome/cilium complex is composed of the centrosome, the primary cilium, and the centriolar satellites, which together function in key cellular processes including signaling. Defective assembly, maintenance, and function of the centrosome/cilium complex cause the human genetic diseases known as ciliopathies, which are characterized by a multitude of developmental syndromes including retinal degeneration and kidney cysts. The molecular mechanisms underlying pathogenesis in ciliopathies remain poorly understood, which requires structural and functional characterization of the mutated ciliopathy proteins at the cellular level. To this end, we elucidated the function and regulation of Cep290, which is the most frequently mutated gene in …

Comparative Study Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells From Rat Bone Marrow And Adipose Tissue, Qing He, Zhaoyang Ye, Yan Zhou, Wen-Song Tan
Turkish Journal of Biology
Several therapeutic products based on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been translated into clinical applications. MSCs should undergo in vitro culture before a sufficient quantity can be achieved. Hence, both expansion kinetics and the biological characteristics of derived cells from primary culture are pertinent to their applications. In the present study, MSCs were isolated from rat bone marrow and adipose tissue (designated as bMSCs and aMSCs, respectively) and cells were comparatively analyzed regarding cell morphology, proliferation, colony formation, differentiation potential, and immunophenotype following the long-term subculture. No apparent differences could be noticed concerning the morphology between bMSCs and aMSCs. The …
