From Seed To Fruit: A Posthuman Journey From Stage To Page, Nicole E. Wood Dec 2010

From Seed To Fruit: A Posthuman Journey From Stage To Page, Nicole E. Wood

Theses

This thesis uses Cybernetic Fruit: A Posthuman Fairytale (a show directed by Shauna MacDonald and Nico Wood) to explore notions of posthumanism. The thesis of this project is that every being possesses beingness (one could say, a soul), be it raccoon, raspberry, or rock; that nothing is perfect or ever can be, for perfection and imperfection (like order and disorder) are human constructions spun from human vantage points and seen with a human-level of resolution; that collaboration fosters propagation of a posthuman discourse and compassionate behavior; and finally, that staging philosophical inquiry, in the flesh and for the community, is …

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan Nov 2010

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan

Research Papers

This investigation uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the author's personal, phenomenological experience of diplopia, double vision, in order to apply the lived condition to an aesthetic form in performance. Using Kuppers's notion of a “crip aesthetic,” this piece re-functions a potential aspect of disability, the condition of diplopia, as a way of opening up discourses of multiplicity in art and performance. The author also calls for others to integrate non-normative body states into their art praxis.

Down Kerouac's Road To Pixar's Up, Walter C. Metz Oct 2010

Down Kerouac's Road To Pixar's Up, Walter C. Metz

Publications

This essay seeks to understand the startling image of Carl Fredricksen launching his house into the air using children’s helium balloons in Pixar’s animated feature, Up (2009). The film interrogates successful adulthood via the figure of the road, both in its literary manifestation in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (1957) and cinematically, via The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939). Paradise Falls itself, like Oz before it, is a letdown just like the “sad paradise” of On the Road. Carl loses faith not only in his boyhood movie hero, the travelogue adventurer Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), but the cinema itself.

Research Papers

This paper locates bodies' centrality to performance studies and interrogates those bodies present in one aesthetic performance, Fopulous, employing a queered version of David Graver's typification in "The Actor's Bodies."

The Mobilization Of Memory: The Battle Of Waterloo In German And British Memory, 1815-1915, Kevin Pryor Aug 2010

The Mobilization Of Memory: The Battle Of Waterloo In German And British Memory, 1815-1915, Kevin Pryor

Theses

This Thesis examines the evolution of the Battle of Waterloo from the perspective of both British and German historical memory over the course of a century. In popular media, Waterloo emerged as a potent symbol for the unity of the nation in both German and British contexts. The Thesis's comparative study of historical memory argues that historical memory is integrally related to a society's development; subsequent generations of Britons and Germans reimagined themselves fighting Waterloo in such diverse media as poetry, editorials, popular history, and iconography. In the British context, the memory of Waterloo from 1815-1914 was partial to small-scale …

Social Structure And Culture: Applying Cross-National Indicators Of Criminal Violence To Domestic Terrorism, Travis Shane Irwin Aug 2010

Social Structure And Culture: Applying Cross-National Indicators Of Criminal Violence To Domestic Terrorism, Travis Shane Irwin

Theses

Despite the increase in terrorism research post September 11, 2001, little is known about domestic terrorism though it occurs at overwhelmingly higher rates as compared to transnational terrorism. Although the use of criminological theory and methods to study terrorism has increased recently, there are relatively few terrorism studies within the criminological literature. Drawing upon extant criminological theories of violence among countries, this study uses the recently created Global Terrorism Database to examine the distribution and correlates of domestic terrorism among 72 developed nations between 1970 and 1997. This study examined the following questions. First, do prior established predictors of criminal …

Continuity In Technological Change: A Political Economic Analysis Of Digital Film Exhibition, Benjamin J. Birkinbine Aug 2010

Continuity In Technological Change: A Political Economic Analysis Of Digital Film Exhibition, Benjamin J. Birkinbine

Theses

This thesis analyzes the current transition to digital cinema projection technologies within the film exhibition business. I begin by discussing two historical cases of technological change in film exhibition technology, and I identify the corporations that successfully controlled periods of technological change in order to solidify their position atop the film industry. In drawing from these historical case studies, I examine the current transition to digital cinema projection technologies by discussing the structure of the film exhibition business and identifying those exhibitors that are controlling the transition to digital cinema. I find that the top three exhibitors - Regal Cinemas, …
