Social Structure And Culture: Applying Cross-National Indicators Of Criminal Violence To Domestic Terrorism, Travis Shane Irwin Aug 2010

Social Structure And Culture: Applying Cross-National Indicators Of Criminal Violence To Domestic Terrorism, Travis Shane Irwin

Theses

Despite the increase in terrorism research post September 11, 2001, little is known about domestic terrorism though it occurs at overwhelmingly higher rates as compared to transnational terrorism. Although the use of criminological theory and methods to study terrorism has increased recently, there are relatively few terrorism studies within the criminological literature. Drawing upon extant criminological theories of violence among countries, this study uses the recently created Global Terrorism Database to examine the distribution and correlates of domestic terrorism among 72 developed nations between 1970 and 1997. This study examined the following questions. First, do prior established predictors of criminal …

The Historical Figures Of The Birthday Cantatas Of Johann Sebastian Bach, Marva J. Watson May 2010

The Historical Figures Of The Birthday Cantatas Of Johann Sebastian Bach, Marva J. Watson

Theses

Johann Sebastian Bach is credited with writing over 300 cantatas. Sacred cantatas comprise most of that repertory, but there are just under forty known secular cantatas composed by Bach. About half of these secular cantatas were written to celebrate a person’s birthday. This thesis will attempt to provide a view of the life of the historical figures for which the birthday cantatas were written, reflections of the personality of the individual in the cantata, Bach’s relationship to the recipient, and political or social connotations associated with the work. From a study of the individuals connected with the musical work, a …

“Can You See The Cystic Artery Yet?” A Simple Matter Of Trust, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Paul Feltovich Mar 2010

As our contribution to this special issue, we examine how understandings of objects are talked and worked into being within concerted action. We will argue that formal procedure can serve as a resource in this regard. Procedures make relevant certain kinds of objects, objects that serve as its materials, tools, end-products, agents, etc. Our analysis traces all references to a particular object, the cystic artery, over the course of a surgery conducted at a teaching hospital. The arrangements of the operating theatre impose certain constraints on how the key participants, a surgeon in training, a faculty member and a medical …

Finding Our Way(S): A Theoretical Model Of Performance Studies And Homeplace, Shauna M. Macdonald Jan 2010

Finding Our Way(S): A Theoretical Model Of Performance Studies And Homeplace, Shauna M. Macdonald

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Place, space, and homeplace have taken on increasing conceptual significance for performance studies practitioners. Despite a wealth of research, there are few theoretical models within the discipline to which researchers of homeplace can appeal for scholarly guidance. In this paper, I survey recent essays about home, place, and space within two major disciplinary journals to create such a model. Using my own experience with homeplace and performance as a frame, I outline four major orientations toward homeplace displayed within recent performance studies literature. Though my goal is far from exhaustive, I aim both to describe the variety of research projects …

Homeplace Of Hands: Fractal Performativity Of Vulnerable Resistance, Diana L. Tigerlily Dec 2009

Homeplace Of Hands: Fractal Performativity Of Vulnerable Resistance, Diana L. Tigerlily

Dissertations

Homeplace of Hands: Fractal Performativity of Vulnerable Resistance is a feminist autoethnography of possibility that puts on display two new concepts I’ve named fractal performativity and vulnerable resistance. Fractal performativity as a way of seeing is an integrative performance methodology that utilizes fractal geometry and performative autoethnography and brings together performance studies, feminist theory, multiethnic literature, personal story and poetry to communicate vulnerable resistance as a strategy for social transformation and selfhood. Vulnerable resistance as a way of being embodies a praxis of homeplace enacted through five modes I’ve identified as nurturance, sustenance, maintenance, performance, and alliance, expressed through the …

Bringing Broadway Home: Organizing A Broadway Pit Orchestra In An Amateur Setting, Laurie Lewis Oct 2009

Bringing Broadway Home: Organizing A Broadway Pit Orchestra In An Amateur Setting, Laurie Lewis

Graduate Student Work

In an ideal musical world, one would have access to all of the instruments, instrumentalists, and financial resources needed to fully reproduce a Broadway pit orchestra. However, in this age of expanding technology, live orchestras are replaced with pre-recorded music, synthesizers, and products like Virtual Orchestra. This paper analyzes amateur theaters’ options for recreating a Broadway pit orchestra without resorting to the aforementioned options, provides an application of this analysis, and briefly discusses the debate of Virtual Orchestra versus live musicians.

Butoh, Bodies, And Being, Brianne Waychoff Oct 2009

Butoh, Bodies, And Being, Brianne Waychoff

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This essay argues for a fluid view of the Japanese avant-garde dance form. Just as butoh resists fixity, this essay is a pastiche of perspectives constituting multiple interpretations of butoh rather than a singular explanation. Through a consideration of Judith Hamera’s 1990 essay “Butoh, Ma, and a Crosscultural Gaze,” coupled with recent popular attention to the form, historical narratives of the Japanese avant-garde and butoh, personal narrative, and reflections provided by butoh performers, this essay opens up alternative ways for thinking about dance practices, and butoh specifically, in performance studies.

“They’Re Supportive, But. . .”: Female Graduate Students And Their Parents’ Reactions To Graduate Education, Rosalie S. Aldrich Oct 2009

“They’Re Supportive, But. . .”: Female Graduate Students And Their Parents’ Reactions To Graduate Education, Rosalie S. Aldrich

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In 2001, there were approximately 1.9 million graduate students in American universities, and a majority of them were women. Graduate students are under a considerable amount of stress and strain, and parents can be a source of social support for their children; however, little research has been done regarding graduate students and the support they receive from their parents. The purpose of this study was to explore parents’ reactions to their daughters’ choice to pursue a graduate degree. Data were collected through open-ended interviews with 18 female graduate students. Results indicated that parents’ reactions to their daughter going to graduate …
