Artists have long been captivated by the myth of Ariadne. Her story is depicted in a multitude of musical settings, and in a range of genres dating back to the early seventeenth century. In addition, there are many dramatic works and visual art this legendary female has inspired. This leads one to question: what is it that creators and audiences alike continue to find so compelling about Ariadne? To understand this question, it is necessary to revisit the Ariadne myth. The Dr. Agatha Bonga Memorial Collection contains over one thousand questionnaires completed by Canadian Second World War veterans surrounding the liberation of the Netherlands and is currently held in The Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society at the University of New Brunswick. Focusing on the narratives of three veteran respondents, James Agnew, Donald Smith and R.O. Steeves, this article shows how veterans’ answers to the questionnaires creates a historical record of the attitudes, emotions and experiences of those who served in the Netherlands and survived the Second World War. This article is a preliminary exploration of the part played by the 1st Canadian War Museum Collection Team, led by Farley Mowat, in locating, gathering, documenting and arranging for the transportation of a vast collection of Second World War weapons and materials from Northwest Europe to Canada in 1945. Lieutenant-Colonel Albert A. Kennedy’s war service could be lifted from the pages of a suspense novel, an action-adventure story and a courtroom drama. He bravely served as commanding officer of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment in Italy, where he led from the front, earned the Distinguished Service Order and for a time was even held as a prisoner of war. His command of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada in North West Europe, by contrast, ended in a confidential report and charges of alleged conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline. This article examines Sean Maloney’s The Canadian Army in Afghanistan in the context of the Canadian Armed Forces’ longstanding official history program. The development of official military history in Canada is briefly described with emphasis on its high levels of access and independence, its links to military operations and its ability to capture and preserve participant accounts and official records. The Canadian Army in Afghanistan was commissioned by the Canadian Army outside the official history program. Editor's note: Forty years ago, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel planned and executed Exercise LIGHTNING STRIKE 86, which explored the possibility of a Soviet threat in the Canadian Arctic. In the dying days of the Cold War, the exercise seemed irrelevant. No longer. Lieutenant Colonel Taylor’s account draws upon his long experience and memories of the operation. It reminds us of the immense operational challenges the CAF face in Canada’s North; the important role of the Canadian Rangers; and the need for a “historical memory” of operations that were once thought unimportant. Shame, Resilience, And Disclosure Predictors Of Mental Health Seeking In Male Veterans With Ptsd And Military Sexual Trauma, Neftali Melendez

Male veterans are often the least likely to report military sexual trauma (MST), increasing the experience of shame, fear, fragility, and mental health disorders. The primary goal of this study was to examine the relationship of shame (internal and external), attitudes towards disclosure, and resilience on mental health help-seeking in male veterans who have experienced sexual abuse while in the military. Brown’s theory of shame resilience guided the development of the hypotheses and interpretation of results. Abstract

The present article explores the role of Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo in transforming cultural conflict within local communities. It draws on qualitative research conducted in Goma and its environs, which included key informant interviews and focus group discussions. It employs conflict transformation theory to explain the findings and illustrate how ritual reintegration, gender advocacy, theatre for conflict resolution, and interfaith dialogue influence actor recognition, moral dialogue, and local dialogue while embedded within power hierarchies and interdenominational conflicts. Two men answered to the name Ernest Shackleton. One belonged to the ice, where he was pioneering, inspirational, and heroic. The other belonged to dry land, where he was restless, indebted, and unfulfilled (Smith, 2014). The 1914 to 1916 Endurance expedition has become the most celebrated leadership case study of the past century, a status the 2022 discovery of the ship's preserved wreck has only hardened. Public and scholarly sentiment runs overwhelmingly positive. "Then Daddy began a story, and this is what he said." That's how J.R.R. Tolkien began the first manuscript version of "Farmer Giles of Ham," one of a few moments of fatherly storytelling to be found in his fiction. Tolkien is remembered today as a great author and artist, but in his home he was a loving parent who regaled his children with tales — a "story-telling presence," as his daughter Priscilla Tolkien put. In this presentation, I reflect on Tolkien as a "daddy" and oral storyteller, drawing on examples from Tolkien's life and writing. I also consider what storytelling …

This study is informed by the cultural-critical approach which seeks to balance the aesthetic, cultural and historical aspects in a literary text. The current study aims at analyzing transformations of the writing concept adopted by contemporary Egyptian short story writers through three waves: early 20th century, the 'Gallery 1967' magazine writers, and the 1990s writers, focusing on how they employ writing techniques to combat social and political discrimination.

This study aims to examine the visual development of the Waru motif in Batik Tulis Namiroh Sidoarjo over time, identify the factors influencing these changes, and analyze the visual elements of batik that indicate such development. The visual development of the motif was analyzed chronologically based on different time periods by examining changes in form, color, and composition from the perspective of visual aesthetics. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with an art and cultural approach. Jiu-jitsu came to America at the turn of the 20th century, just as the Russo-Japanese war was focusing  world interest on Japanese culture and martial training. An analysis of more than 2,400 articles and  illustrations about the art from American newspapers during jiu-jitsu’s first years in the United States demonstrates the ways media framed jiu-jitsu in militaristic, political, racial, and gendered terms for an enthusiastic and curious public.

This project focuses on graphic design software becoming increasingly accessible and questions emerging regarding the role of professional designers and the value of industry-standard design tools. This project examines the differences between Canva, a widely used template-driven design platform, and Adobe Illustrator, a professional vector-based design application. Through a hands-on, project-based research approach, the same brand identity was developed in both programs, including a style guide, business card, website homepage mock-up, and tri-fold. The comparison focused on workflow efficiency, creative freedom, typography, color management, scalability, and production readiness.

Effective communication during nursing handoffs is essential for safe, patient-centered care, as breakdowns in communication are a leading cause of adverse patient outcomes. At a large academic level I trauma center, inconsistent nursing handoff practices were identified across progressive care units following the COVID-19 pandemic. This variability contributed to incomplete transfer of patient information and was associated with increased patient safety incidents, including delayed wound care, central line dressing lapses, and medication errors involving high-alert therapies.
