Because It's Real Difficult In Life: Annie Hall And The Theatrical Imagination, Walter C. Metz

Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationship between the theatrical and filmic work of Woody Allen. I begin with an assessment of Mighty Aphrodite’s literal use of the ancient Greek stage. I use this prologue as a frame for developing an intertextual reading of Annie Hall (1977) using George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion (1913). I conclude with a set of reflections that allow the theatrical to be used as a frame for understanding Woody Allen’s films more generally, with a brief case study of Deconstructing Harry (1997).

The Capital Gap: Nollywood And The Limits Of Informal Trade, John C. Mccall

This article examines Nollywood as a creative industry based in Africa’s informal sector. By definition, the informal sector produces no financial records, so no quantitative economic data are presented. This research utilizes ethnographic methods and anthropological analysis to highlight the importance of the video movie industry to Nigerian people, its place in their economic life and its integral role in their culture. Nollywood’s intimacy with Nigerians has been achieved by way of the industry’s distinctive informal system of production and distribution. Most research on media effects in political science deals with the news media or political campaigns. While some recent work looks at the effects of soft news on beliefs and opinions, little attention has been paid to the potential consequences of media that are fictional. Although viewers typically watch fiction for entertainment, the themes, plots, and dialogue may nevertheless influence their thoughts about politics. This paper examines the effects of fiction on political beliefs. We do this in the context of an experimental design, where subjects in the treatment group watched the outlandish movie, Wag the Dog. The broadcasting of live sporting events in America has embarked into a new frontier of three-dimensional (3D) high-definition (HD) broadcasting. In this research paper, I examine what the future holds for live 3D broadcasts of sports in America. I believe that there is a future of sports in 3D. In this paper I go over the history of both sports media and 3D technology as well as gather opinions from professionals in 3D manufacturing, 3D sports media, 3D advertisers, and 3D retail. 3D is here and as time goes on, more and more 3DTV’s will be in American homes.

The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, I will examine the influences shaping the choices of teenagers living in an affluent society during the early days of the Cold War, specifically 1950 - 1955. I will discuss the contradictions about society, the family unit, and gender roles teenagers attempted to sort out as they moved through adolescence. Everywhere You Look documents the genesis, production process, performance history, and rewrites of a script informed by a concern for social justice issues in contemporary America. In the quest to generate believable, naturalistic dialogue and behavior informed by important questions of religious conviction, civil liberties, and the viability of violence as a political solution, the script is cast as social realism. After a discussion of the critical context in which the play exists, the lessons and pitfalls of collaboration in the production process are charted. A rewritten script is generated from a process of performance, talk-backs sessions, and committee recommendations. …

Re/Turning To Her: An A/R/Tographic Ritual Inquiry, Barbara Bickel, Tannis Hugill

This article reaches into the depths of a collaborative a/r/tographic ritual inquiry between two women artist-educators-priestesses. Within this we reflect on the intersections of research, art, spirituality, and education as thresholds of collaborative learning. Throughout the ritual-infused research process, we generated source material and imagery from trance, Authentic Movement, the labyrinth, reflective writing and co-interviews. Each of these process practices took us outside of ourselves, and attuned us to Spirit, offering a larger perspective on the inquiry while simultaneously bringing us closer to actualizing the performance ritual. The purpose of the paper is to perform an analysis on the Marvel Comic Uncanny X-Men. The goal of this analysis is to understand Black characters location in the narrative and their level of participation in the narrative. The result is that Black characters are underrepresented in the comic as main characters and show a lack of participation in the overall narrative.
