Beyond Materiality In Animation: Sensuous Perception And Touch In The Tactile Existence Of "Would A Heart Die?", Ellen C. Rocha Souza

This research focuses on the tangibility three-dimensional stop-motion animation allows in its authorial process, and on the tactility and materiality it evokes on the other side of the screen. Based on these assumptions, I seek to demonstrate how the sense of touch is evoked by the tactility of materials used in three-dimensional stop-motion animation, by drawing on the concepts of fabrication (Wells, 1998), haptic visuality (Marks, 2002), tactile image (Barker, 2009), and on the embodied viewer’s experience as defined by Vivian Sobchack (1992; 2004). In the United States, regional sports networks broadcast games of home teams to audiences in specific communities, or geographical areas. Ownership of regional sports network by sports teams presents a unique type of vertical integration. Regional sports networks use distinctive programming to connect to local sports culture. This dissertation explores the historical significance of New England Sports Network (NESN), a team created, owned and operated regional sports network, which broadcasts Boston Red Sox baseball games and Boston Bruins hockey games throughout the New England region. When searching for appropriate literature for any choral group, there are many considerations to take into account: the musical abilities of the singers, the type of accompaniment, the vocal ranges and tessitura in the parts, the language of the text, etc. One primary consideration would be the divisi or number of parts within a piece, which can sometimes be a good measure of the piece’s difficulty. Takarazuka For The Family: Japanese All-Women’S Musical Theater And Traditional Gender Perceptions, Kay Satoh

Takarazuka, the Japanese all-female musical theater troupe has been inspiring Japanese audiences since 1913, when it first began as a place for training young girls to becoming ryosai kenbo, or “good wives, wise mothers.” The women are assigned either as a musumeyaku (daughter-role) or otokoyaku (male-role) when performing on stage. The founder, Ichizo Kobayashi hoped that the training through the Takarazuka Music School as well as the experience of performing male roles would strengthen the character of these young women, ultimately preparing them for marriage. Around 1930, he also created the school motto, “Kiyoku, tadashiku, utsukushiku,” meaning “[With] purity, …

In this dissertation, I outline a theoretical justification for a new world systems analysis in order to understand economic development and underdevelopment, and stratification systems that emerge within nation states because of their global social location. I present my detailed case for amending Wallerstein's World-Systems Analysis by empirically incorporating the interplay of the military, economy and state as opposed to his primarily economic division of labor that defines the core, periphery and semi periphery. I do this by uncovering the latent structure of militarization and its articulation within the world system controlling for state strength. I also outline the basic …

Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationship between the theatrical and filmic work of Woody Allen. I begin with an assessment of Mighty Aphrodite’s literal use of the ancient Greek stage. I use this prologue as a frame for developing an intertextual reading of Annie Hall (1977) using George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion (1913). I conclude with a set of reflections that allow the theatrical to be used as a frame for understanding Woody Allen’s films more generally, with a brief case study of Deconstructing Harry (1997).

This article examines Nollywood as a creative industry based in Africa’s informal sector. By definition, the informal sector produces no financial records, so no quantitative economic data are presented. This research utilizes ethnographic methods and anthropological analysis to highlight the importance of the video movie industry to Nigerian people, its place in their economic life and its integral role in their culture. Nollywood’s intimacy with Nigerians has been achieved by way of the industry’s distinctive informal system of production and distribution. Most research on media effects in political science deals with the news media or political campaigns. While some recent work looks at the effects of soft news on beliefs and opinions, little attention has been paid to the potential consequences of media that are fictional. Although viewers typically watch fiction for entertainment, the themes, plots, and dialogue may nevertheless influence their thoughts about politics. This paper examines the effects of fiction on political beliefs. We do this in the context of an experimental design, where subjects in the treatment group watched the outlandish movie, Wag the Dog. The broadcasting of live sporting events in America has embarked into a new frontier of three-dimensional (3D) high-definition (HD) broadcasting. In this research paper, I examine what the future holds for live 3D broadcasts of sports in America. I believe that there is a future of sports in 3D. In this paper I go over the history of both sports media and 3D technology as well as gather opinions from professionals in 3D manufacturing, 3D sports media, 3D advertisers, and 3D retail. 3D is here and as time goes on, more and more 3DTV’s will be in American homes.

Everywhere You Look documents the genesis, production process, performance history, and rewrites of a script informed by a concern for social justice issues in contemporary America. In the quest to generate believable, naturalistic dialogue and behavior informed by important questions of religious conviction, civil liberties, and the viability of violence as a political solution, the script is cast as social realism. After a discussion of the critical context in which the play exists, the lessons and pitfalls of collaboration in the production process are charted.
