Comparison Of New Metrics For Assessment Of Risks Of Occupational Noise, Wisam Al-Dayyeni, Jun Qin
Comparison Of New Metrics For Assessment Of Risks Of Occupational Noise, Wisam Al-Dayyeni, Jun Qin
ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium
The acoustic environment nowadays is filled with excessive noise sources. Here, we will compare the conventional noise metrics(A-weighting and C-weighting) with our two developed advanced models (the adaptive weighting (F-weight) and the complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model).
The Operationalizing Of Lynch’S Cognitive Representation Elements Of Large Scale Environments, Jon D. Davey Phd Aia
The Operationalizing Of Lynch’S Cognitive Representation Elements Of Large Scale Environments, Jon D. Davey Phd Aia
ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium
The result of operationalizing Lynch’s (1960) cognitive representation elements of large scale environments is a set of images that can be employed in a research project identifying the various domains of the brain where each of Lynch’s (1960) elements occur. With such data, designing wayfinding within buildings: in urban habitats, and even within virtual worlds can be better realized.
The research design will use Siegel and White’s (1975) model as a spatial representation of Lynch’s (1960) five elements of large-scale environments’ physical form. These contents of physical form are classified as followed: paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. It is …
Organizational Decline And Fiscal Distress In Municipal Police Agencies, Matthew Giblin, Jeffrey Nowacki
Organizational Decline And Fiscal Distress In Municipal Police Agencies, Matthew Giblin, Jeffrey Nowacki
Articles
In late 2007, the United States entered one of the most significant recessions in recent memory. While the consequences to individuals have been well-documented, less attention has been paid to the effects on state-sponsored organizations such as police agencies. The current study examines fiscal distress (e.g., layoffs, hiring freezes) in a sample of large municipal law enforcement agencies. According to a framework proposed by Levine (1978), departments should be most vulnerable to fiscal distress when the jurisdiction experiences economic shocks (environmental entropy), the demand for police services declines (problem depletion), the political system becomes less supportive of police agencies (political …
Book Review Of "Point Of Departure: Returning To A More Authentic Worldview For Education And Survival" By Four Arrows (Aka Don Trent Jacobs), Barbara Bickel
Book Review Of "Point Of Departure: Returning To A More Authentic Worldview For Education And Survival" By Four Arrows (Aka Don Trent Jacobs), Barbara Bickel
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Four Arrows’ new book, according to his Wikipedia page, is his 22nd book. Prolific in his life work as a professor, Indigenous educator, writer, musician and activist, he describes this book as his most honest and most radical. It is radical in how it reveals the damage inflicted by what he labels the Dominant (Western) Worldview. He urges us to return to the primal healing ways of the contrasting ancient Indigenous Worldview in order to limit the largely anthropogenic 6th mass extinction on planet earth. The good news that Four Arrows highlights at the opening of the book …
Art-Based Perceptual Ecology: An Alternative Monitoring Method In The Assessment Of Rainfall And Vegetation In A Ciénaga Community, Lee Ann Woolery
Art-Based Perceptual Ecology: An Alternative Monitoring Method In The Assessment Of Rainfall And Vegetation In A Ciénaga Community, Lee Ann Woolery
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
As an artist, educator, researcher, and scholar, with a focus on divergent ways of knowing, I use art-making as a way to connect with the natural world. In the following article, I explore the making of an image with my hands when practicing Art-Based Perceptual Ecology (ABPE) as a way of extending my understanding and ecological knowing of the natural world, or what will also be referred to as the landscape. ABPE methodologies may offer the means by which humans reconnect to a pre-discursive (mimetic) language, a sentient language our ancestors used to communicate with the animate world. In …

The World Breathing Me. Introduction To Artizein, Jan Van Boeckel
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This introductory article argues why it is both relevant and timely to reflect on ways in which art and ecology can be brought together in educational practices – the theme of this edition of Artizein. It also provides an overview of all written contributions.
Behavioral Interventions For Sexual Deviancy In Individuals With Developmental Disorders, Samuel Krus
Behavioral Interventions For Sexual Deviancy In Individuals With Developmental Disorders, Samuel Krus
Research Papers
Statistical analyses have found a significant proportion of crime is of a sexual nature and that reducing its occurrence is a complex problem that has had various solutions proposed. Therapy programs that focus on the reduction of sexually deviant behavior have been proposed by many clinicians and researchers in the psychological and rehabilitative fields which have shown varying degrees of success. As treatments have been developed across multiple disciplines there have been many paradigms developed around the development and corresponding treatment of sexually deviant behavior. Along with addressing the behavior itself, many programs have sought to address sexual deviancy based …
Impact Of Political Identity And Past Crisis Experience On Water Attitudes, Coy Callison, Derrick Holland
Impact Of Political Identity And Past Crisis Experience On Water Attitudes, Coy Callison, Derrick Holland
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
With stories of regional diminishing water resources and tainted municipal water supplies consistently populating the news, a nationwide survey was conducted to gauge overall concern and attitudes toward water scarcity and water pollution, as well as scientists and scientific information regarding water crises. Of particular interest was the question of how political ideology and past experience with scarcity and/or pollution impact pro-water attitudes and intention to exhibit positive water behaviors. Multivariate analyses of data suggest that Liberals are more concerned about water scarcity and pollution and more likely to conserve and combat pollution than their Conservative counterparts. People who have …
The Prevalence Of Religious Service Attendance In America: A Review And Meta-Analysis, Chad S. Briggs
The Prevalence Of Religious Service Attendance In America: A Review And Meta-Analysis, Chad S. Briggs
Dissertations
The Gallup Poll and General Social Survey have asked Americans about their religious service attendance since 1939 and 1972, respectively. With remarkable consistency, these two surveys have estimated that just over 40% of the American population regularly attends religious services. Yet, recent research has called this “gold standard” into question, citing three sources of bias in these estimates: (a) ambiguous item wording, (b) an ambiguously specified time frame; and (c) data collection methods that lend themselves to socially desirable responding. Several lines of research have developed to eliminate or minimize these sources of bias, but these efforts have yielded a …
Effects Of Olfactory Enrichments On African Cheetahs (Acinonyx Jubatus), Marcus Chas Abston
Effects Of Olfactory Enrichments On African Cheetahs (Acinonyx Jubatus), Marcus Chas Abston
Theses
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF MARCUS C. ABSTON, for the Master of Science degree in ZOOLOGY, presented on 18 April 2017, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: EFFECTS OF OLFACTORY ENRICHMENT ON AFRICAN CHEETAHS (ACINONYX JUBATUS) MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Carey Krajewski Environmental enrichment has been an essential part of felid husbandry in zoos, serving to reduce both physiological and psychological stress. Olfactory enrichment is one of many interventions used to prevent stereotypic behavior caused by stress in felids. However, little research has been done on this practice. The purpose of this study was to compare behavioral responses of four …
The Assessment And Etiology Of Novelty Seeking And Rule-Breaking In Young Children, Emma Brittany Diaz
The Assessment And Etiology Of Novelty Seeking And Rule-Breaking In Young Children, Emma Brittany Diaz
Theses
This study explored the stability and heritability of novelty seeking, defiance, and rule-breaking in early childhood using a twin sample. Parent reports of novelty seeking were assessed at ages 3 and 4, parent reports of rule-breaking were assessed at ages 5 and follow-up (6-16), and observer reports of defiance were assessed at age 5. Results showed that novelty seeking increased between ages 3 and 4, and rule-breaking remained stable from age 5 to follow-up (6-16). All constructs demonstrated significant heritability. Finally, neither novelty seeking nor defiance predicted 5-year-old rule-breaking. Defiance was the only construct that significantly predicted follow-up rule-breaking. Defiance …

The academic expectation reflects the importance of program ranking, completion of doctoral degree …
Supervisors’ Experience Of Resistance During Online Group Supervision: A Phenomenological Case Study, James R. Morton Jr.
Supervisors’ Experience Of Resistance During Online Group Supervision: A Phenomenological Case Study, James R. Morton Jr.
Dissertations
Leaders in higher education institutions throughout the United States regard distance learning as an important part of their long-term strategic planning (Allen & Seaman, 2015). Counselor education and supervision training programs are following this trend as demonstrated by the increase of online programs being offered to train professional counselors (Renfro‐Michel, O'Halloran, & Delaney, 2010). Some studies have investigated how online supervision compares to in-person or face-to-face counselor training (e.g., Lenz, Oliver, & Nelson, 2011). However, little is known about counselor educators’ experiences of online group supervision. A phenomenological case study explored the counselor educators’ lived experiences of resistance during online …
A Comparison Of Two Mcmc Algorithms For Estimating The 2pl Irt Models, Meng-I Chang
A Comparison Of Two Mcmc Algorithms For Estimating The 2pl Irt Models, Meng-I Chang
Dissertations
The fully Bayesian estimation via the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques has become popular for estimating item response theory (IRT) models. The current development of MCMC includes two major algorithms: Gibbs sampling and the No-U-Turn sampler (NUTS). While the former has been used with fitting various IRT models, the latter is relatively new, calling for the research to compare it with other algorithms. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the performances of these two emerging MCMC algorithms in estimating two two-parameter logistic (2PL) IRT models, namely, the 2PL unidimensional model and the 2PL multi-unidimensional …
Inhibitory Control And Its Relation To Personality/Temperament, Executive Function, And The Brain, Sarah Mailander Dyer
Inhibitory Control And Its Relation To Personality/Temperament, Executive Function, And The Brain, Sarah Mailander Dyer
Dissertations
Inhibitory control, described as the ability to suppress one response in favor of a goal-directed response, is thought to play an important role in the development of emotional regulation as well as various forms of psychopathology, including ADHD. Up until very recently, inhibitory control has been researched within two completely separate fields of study: temperament and neuropsychology. In the temperament/personality literature, inhibitory control is a major component of the overarching temperament/personality factor of Effortful Control/Conscientiousness. In the field of neuropsychology, inhibitory control is considered one aspect of executive function. Further complicating the current understanding of inhibitory control is the complexity …
"My Journey Out Of...": How Women Narrate Their Religious Departures, Angela Louise Glunz
"My Journey Out Of...": How Women Narrate Their Religious Departures, Angela Louise Glunz
Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze stories that don’t often get told or heard. Traditionally, nonreligious people have had to keep their lack of belief to themselves out of fear of persecution. In the literature review of this dissertation, I summarize previous scholarship about leaving religion. In an effort to learn about autobiographies written by nonreligious women, I utilize storytelling as a theoretical framework, located within the rhetorical uses of personal narratives, and ask: What are the types of challenges, experiences, and topics that nonreligious women include in their stories?; How do these autobiographies invite readers to understand …

Finding Home: Diasporic Community Building In A Rural U.S. Town, Debadatta Chakraborty
Finding Home: Diasporic Community Building In A Rural U.S. Town, Debadatta Chakraborty
Research Papers
A substantial Indian immigrant population in the U.S. resides beyond the major metropolitan areas. Yet studies on Indian diaspora are focused on big cities, with relatively limited literature on diasporic communities in the smaller cities and towns. This study addresses this gap by understanding how the diasporic ‘Indian’ community in a small U.S. (rural-University) town makes sense of the Indian culture and forms a sense of community, without having the cultural resources of big cities. It explores the way gender, religion, age, race and ethnicity are negotiated in the creation of a ‘home away from home’, and the way cultural …
College Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Higher Education, George D. Lowery
College Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Higher Education, George D. Lowery
Research Papers
Abstract
Although there is a wealth of literature available on children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the scholarship regarding adults with ASD is much thinner. Serving adults with ASD in higher education is an emerging area of research in the study of autism in adulthood. As more people are being diagnosed with higher functioning forms of ASD, it is logical to assume that some adults with ASD will choose to pursue some form of post-secondary education. Despite the increase in students with ASD, very few institutions of higher education offer disability-specific services for students on the autism spectrum. The purpose …
Differential Fasting Plasma Glucose And Ketone Body Levels In Ghrko Versus 3xtg-Ad Mice: A Potential Contributor To Aging-Related Cognitive Status?, Chelsea M Griffith, Lauren N Macklin, Andrzej Bartke, Peter R Patrylo
Differential Fasting Plasma Glucose And Ketone Body Levels In Ghrko Versus 3xtg-Ad Mice: A Potential Contributor To Aging-Related Cognitive Status?, Chelsea M Griffith, Lauren N Macklin, Andrzej Bartke, Peter R Patrylo
Articles
Cognitive function declines with age and appears to correlate with decreased cerebral metabolic rate (CMR). Caloric restriction, an antiaging manipulation that extends life-span and can preserve cognitive function, is associated with decreased glucose uptake, decreased lactate levels, and increased ketone body (KB) levels in the brain. Since the majority of brain nutrients come from the periphery, this study examined whether the capacity to regulate peripheral glucose levels and KB production differs in animals with successful cognitive aging (growth hormone receptor knockouts, GHRKOs) versus unsuccessful cognitive aging (the 3xTg-AD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease). Animals were fasted for 5 hours with …

My Journey To Better Medicine: Healing The Mind-Body Split Through An Integrated Cross-Cultural Model, Harsh Ilapakurthi
My Journey To Better Medicine: Healing The Mind-Body Split Through An Integrated Cross-Cultural Model, Harsh Ilapakurthi
Honors Theses
As a future medical doctor, I will always see the process of healing through the hybrid consciousness of my Eastern-Hindu upbringing and Western academic and scientific training. The Eastern philosophy of healing has been linked to consciousness and how the powers of human consciousness can affect the body’s healing. The Western perspective of medicine, which has developed as a result of the industrial and scientific revolutions, generally treats the human body as an object. However, this is not to say that Western medicine is flawed. In fact, Western medicine is incredibly effective in certain specialties, but is limited by the …
The Cost Of Stability: Consumption-Based Fixed Rate Billing For Water Utilities, Amy Schmidt, Lynne Lewis
The Cost Of Stability: Consumption-Based Fixed Rate Billing For Water Utilities, Amy Schmidt, Lynne Lewis
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Municipal water utilities in the United States face the challenge of balancing the potentially conflicting goals of sending signals about water scarcity and maintaining revenue stability. Times of extreme shortage such as the current extended drought in California seriously challenge and can jeopardize this delicate balance. Mandatory or voluntary conservation strategies can be detrimental to revenue stability. This study explores the ability of the Consumption-Based Fixed Rates (CBFR) pricing method to solve this dual dilemma of scarcity pricing and revenue stability in both normal times and times of drought. CBFR proposes using a proportional consumer pricing system directly based on …

Influence Of Media On Self-Objectification, Body Image, And Rape Myths Acceptance Among College Students, Catarina Durante Bergue Alves
Theses
This study is an investigation of how exposure to different media content influences self-objectification, body image, and rape myths acceptance (RMA) in female college students. The purpose of this study was to further explore the effects of immediate media exposure on body image, self-objectification, and RMA, as well as address the gap in the literature regarding the relationship between these variables (Dakanalis et al., 2015; Fox et al., 2015). One hundred and one students that identified as female were randomly assigned to three experimental conditions using a partially blind design. The students watched a short video pertaining to the condition …
A Characterization Of Power Method Transformations Through The Method Of Percentiles, Tzu-Chun Kuo, Todd C. Headrick
A Characterization Of Power Method Transformations Through The Method Of Percentiles, Tzu-Chun Kuo, Todd C. Headrick
Conference Proceedings
This paper derives closed-form solutions for the fifth-ordered power method poly- nomial transformation based on the method of percentiles (MOP). A proposed MOP univariate procedure is described and compared with the method of moments (MOM) in the context of distribution fitting and estimating skew, kurtosis, fifth-and sixth- ordered functions. The MOP methodology is also extended from univariate to multi- variate data generation. The MOP procedure has an advantage over the MOM because it does not require numerical integration to compute intermediate correlations. In addition, the MOP procedure can be applied to distributions where mean and(or) variance do(does) not exist. Simulation …

A Study Of Preschool Teachers’ Incorporation Of Nutrition And Physical Activity In Their Classrooms, Brandi Schumacher
Dissertations
Young children in the United States spend a considerable amount of time in preschool settings. Preschool teachers have an opportunity to incorporate nutrition and physical activity into their interactions with these children in order to positively influence the health of the children. This qualitative, case study explored how teachers at a Reggio Emilia inspired preschool integrate nutrition and physical activity into their teaching. The research questions that guided this study included, “In what ways do preschool teachers in a Reggio Emilia inspired preschool in the Midwest incorporate nutrition and physical activity in their classrooms?” and “What influences if and how …
The Effects Of Pregnancy On Student Progress, Sarah Hope Steinkamp
The Effects Of Pregnancy On Student Progress, Sarah Hope Steinkamp
Dissertations
Ample evidence exists establishing the relationship between pregnancy during high school and subsequent educational difficulties, yet little research has investigated the relationship between pregnancy during college and subsequent educational difficulties. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between pregnancy in undergraduate college students and educational attainment and to determine the strength and direction of said relationship. A quantitative research approach composed of historical medical and retention data was utilized. Vincent Tinto’s theory of student departure was applied to frame the use of experience of pregnancy diagnosis as a variable related to retention. Findings indicate a …
Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson
Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson
Honors Theses
The evolution of museological theory at the Bibliotheque de Sainte-Genevieve marks a transition in the history of collecting during the early modern period. Although the contents of the collection remained largely unchanged from earlier Wunderkammern, the acquisition, display, and organization of artifacts within the cabinet had evolved tremendously by the end of the 17th century and one can begin to see the collection as a predecessor of modern museological methodologies.
