Neoliberal Environmentalism In The War On Poverty: A Case Study Of Carbondale, Illinois, Gregory Matthew Carter May 2017

Neoliberal Environmentalism In The War On Poverty: A Case Study Of Carbondale, Illinois, Gregory Matthew Carter

Theses

The following thesis examines the city of Carbondale, Illinois, during the tumultuous years between 1965 and 1975. Carbondale was the recipient of large amounts of funding from the Model Cities program, part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. During that time, Carbondale experienced violent anti-war protests and community-wide unrest. At the same time as Model Cities projects began, the modern environmentalism movement surrounding the first observance of Earth Day, April 22, 1970, also occurred. Within four years, environmental groups comprised mostly of white citizens were pitted against African-American community activists working to improve Carbondale’s segregated Northeast neighborhood and the …

Hegemonic Masculinity And Transphobia, Marilyn Chung May 2017

Hegemonic Masculinity And Transphobia, Marilyn Chung

Theses

Transphobia research has focused on predictors and correlations of prejudice toward transgender people. Consistently, male participants have higher transphobic attitudes compared to female participants in various studies. Further, males are overrepresented in crimes against transgender people. However, these studies were correlational and causation cannot be determined. Masculinity researchers outside of psychology have discussed maintenance of masculine privilege as a motivator for oppressive beliefs and actions. Thus, the goal of this study was to provide an experimental study of causes for increased transphobic attitudes in men, based on sociological and gender studies’ research on hegemonic masculinity. To test this, participants were …

The Transferability Of Soft Skills Of Women Veterans To Corporate America, Chanty Bradley Clay May 2017

The Transferability Of Soft Skills Of Women Veterans To Corporate America, Chanty Bradley Clay

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the transfer of soft skills of women veterans to their post military career in corporate America in order to support their career success by helping them market and utilize their soft skills and experience in their post military career, and to better understand the employability issues of women veterans. Thorndike and Woodworth’s (1901) Identical Elements Theory was used to better understand how women veterans transferred learning in one context (military) to another similar context (corporate America) and their identification, marketability, and utilization of these learned soft skills to the workforce. A narrative …

Identity Management Politics In Glocalized English Hegemony: Cultural Struggles, Facework Strategies, And Intercultural Relationships In Taiwanese English Education, Hsun-Yu Chuang May 2017

Identity Management Politics In Glocalized English Hegemony: Cultural Struggles, Facework Strategies, And Intercultural Relationships In Taiwanese English Education, Hsun-Yu Chuang

Dissertations

The globalization of the English language has rendered both positive and negative impacts to countries around the world. With the ever-increasing pervasiveness of the English language, many non-native-English-speaking (NNES hereafter) people and countries have shown growing interests in teaching and learning English. Some governments of these NNES countries have decided to implement “English” as a mandatory school subject into their compulsory curriculum in order to “connect with the world” and/or to increase their nation’s international image. However, in these NNES countries, English often does not hold official capacity and is taught as a foreign language (EFL). Although English (language) education …

Education From The "Bottom" Up: Black Women Navigating The Community College Transfer Experience, Kristin Dade May 2017

Education From The "Bottom" Up: Black Women Navigating The Community College Transfer Experience, Kristin Dade

Dissertations

This study looks at the experiences of 11 Black women as they transfer from community colleges to four-year institutions. This study employs Black Feminist Thought to help analyze the experiences of Black women who transfer from community colleges to four-year institutions. This framework is particularly applicable to this study because Black Feminist Thought recognizes the varied experiences that women encounter based on their intersecting identities (such as race and gender). Although Black women share some common racial and gender experiences, Black Feminist Thought acknowledges the fact that each woman ultimately has her own narrative, which influences how she perceives and …

Women And Work-Life Balance: A Narrative Inquiry Of Working Single Mothers Balancing Family And Work, Casheena Atari Stephens

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore working single mothers’ work-life balance in order to better understand how employers can assist them. Role theory, role conflict theory, and spillover theory were utilized to examine how working single mothers experience work-life balance and how they perceive it. In this study, the researcher sought to discover, analyze, and report work-life balance experiences of working single mothers through extended narrative accounts, which answer the following research questions: 1. In what ways do working single mothers strive to attain work-life balance? 2. What challenges do working single mothers encounter that affect their ability …

A Case Study Of Peer Assessment In A Mooc-Based Composition Course: Students’ Perceptions, Peers’ Grading Scores Versus Instructors’ Grading Scores, And Peers’ Commentary Versus Instructors’ Commentary, Lan Thi Vu May 2017

A Case Study Of Peer Assessment In A Mooc-Based Composition Course: Students’ Perceptions, Peers’ Grading Scores Versus Instructors’ Grading Scores, And Peers’ Commentary Versus Instructors’ Commentary, Lan Thi Vu

Dissertations

Although the use of peer assessment in MOOCs is common, there has been little empirical research about peer assessment in MOOCs, especially composition MOOCs. This study aimed to address issues in peer assessment in a MOOC-based composition course, in particular student perceptions, peer-grading scores versus instructor-grading scores, and peer commentary versus instructor commentary. The findings provided evidence that peer assessment was well received by the majority of student participants from their perspective as both peer evaluators of other students’ papers and as students being evaluated by their peers. However, many student participants also expressed negative feelings about certain aspects of …

A Literature Review Of Climate Change And Urban Sustainability, Julia L. Sanabria May 2017

A Literature Review Of Climate Change And Urban Sustainability, Julia L. Sanabria

Research Papers

Cities are vulnerable to climate change, but they are also uniquely positioned to lead the way in both mitigating and adapting to it. While there is no single solution to climate change, cities have a responsibility to transition toward a more sustainable future. This paper examines current literature in climate change and sustainability in urban areas through a discussion of the urban heat island effect, human health, natural hazards, urbanization trends, socioeconomic factors, urban energy, water and wastewater, public transportation, waste management, green infrastructure and governance. The paper has three key goals: (1) to examine how climate change is affecting …

A Comparison Study Of Saliency Models For Fixation Prediction On Infants And Adults, Ali Mahdi, Mei Su, Matthew Schlesinger, Jun Qin

Articles

Various saliency models have been developed over the years. The performance of saliency models is typically evaluated based on databases of experimentally recorded adult eye fixations. Although studies on infant gaze patterns have attracted much attention recently, saliency based models have not been widely applied for prediction of infant gaze patterns. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive comparison study of eight state-ofthe- art saliency models on predictions of experimentally captured fixations from infants and adults. Seven evaluation metrics are used to evaluate and compare the performance of saliency models. The results demonstrate a consistent performance of saliency models predicting …

Community Gardens And Ecological Citizenship: Their Potential And Limitations In Fostering Environmentalism, Michael J. Kennedy Apr 2017

Community Gardens And Ecological Citizenship: Their Potential And Limitations In Fostering Environmentalism, Michael J. Kennedy

Research Papers

Mainstream agricultural and food production methods are a major source of environmental degradation, which has not been addressed by large-scale and global initiatives. Alternatively, grassroots and local initiatives may be more effective at alleviating the causes of environmental degradation associated with food and agriculture. Specifically, community gardens are an important local greenspace that can be used to address and educate individuals about the importance of food and the environment. However, certain barriers need to be overcome and addressed before community gardens are successfully implement. The participation and interaction at community gardens may provide a pathway to long-term commitment to sustainability, …

Surveillance Self-Defense: Privacy In The Post-9/11 Mass Surveillance State, Nathaniel D. Fortmeyer

Research Papers

The nature of digital information and the networked world has enabled the greatest advances in communication, education, art, science, and entertainment since the invention of the printing press. However, with each new day the systems and technologies to track people and predict their behavior only expand. Corporations and governments track anyone and everyone. Privacy has never been in such grave danger. The collection, storage, and analysis of data have enabled the expansion of the pervasive surveillance state. Journalists, whistleblowers, activists, and average citizens are all under attack. A democracy cannot thrive in an environment deprived of freedom of thought, information, …

Rap Lyrics, Schools, And Free Speech: Examining The Limits Of Free Speech Of Students Outside Of Schools And On Social Media, Bret M. Thixton Mar 2017

Rap Lyrics, Schools, And Free Speech: Examining The Limits Of Free Speech Of Students Outside Of Schools And On Social Media, Bret M. Thixton

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

With the rise of the political correctness movement, the education system is split on how best to handle issues revolving around student speech.  Some institutions clamp down on students by creating safe spaces or instructing teachers and professors to avoid certain words; others continue to allow students to exercise their various forms of speech nearly unabridged.  Each institution has its own speech policy, and policies can vary from extremely limiting to a nearly free-range for ideas, speech, and expression.  While the Constitution allows for freedom of speech, the Supreme Court has found that in certain situations, that right may be …

Graduation Ceremonies: A Prayer For Balancing Sponsorship And Censorship, Anton Sorkin Mar 2017

Graduation Ceremonies: A Prayer For Balancing Sponsorship And Censorship, Anton Sorkin

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The battle over school prayer, beginning in the aftermath of Engel v. Vitale, has sparked a wave of controversy that was kindled by the graduation prayer decisions of Lee v. Weisman and Santa Fe v. Doe.  While proponents of a strict separationist approach use these cases as a sword to remove all traces of religion from public schools, the decisions themselves do not require such drastic measures.  While teacher-led prayer and bible studies are certainly a relic of our former self, student-initiated religious speech at graduation ceremonies is very much alive—possessing those qualities embedded in our First Amendment …

Bellesiles’S Arming America Redux: Does The Gunning Of America Rewrite American History To Suit Modern Sensibilities?, Clayton E. Cramer Mar 2017

Bellesiles’S Arming America Redux: Does The Gunning Of America Rewrite American History To Suit Modern Sensibilities?, Clayton E. Cramer

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Fifteen years ago, Michael Bellesiles’s Arming America was the darling of antigun intellectuals because it created an entirely new perception of the American relationship to guns.  It implicitly argued for a much narrower reading of the Second Amendment that was compliant with an America (then) that hated guns and did not own them.  Questions were soon raised about the accuracy of the statistics in Bellesiles’s articles and book, his honesty about where he researched documents, his widespread alteration of quotes, and his citations to documents that directly refuted his claims.  He rapidly went from tenured professor of history at Emory …

Misfits In The Front Of The Classroom: Poetic Narratives Of Teaching With A Hidden Disability, Nicole C. Eugene Feb 2017

Misfits In The Front Of The Classroom: Poetic Narratives Of Teaching With A Hidden Disability, Nicole C. Eugene

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Instructors with a hidden disability may choose to talk with their students about their disability, they may choose to pass as normal, or they may deal with their disability in ways that challenge the binary of showing/hiding. Communication about disabilities occurs in contexts that provide a range of possible cultural values that can work to reinforce an individual’s sense of belonging to a group or organization. To examine how graduate students negotiate their disability or illness in the classroom context, I conducted three interviews with graduate instructors addressing how they communicate their disability in the classes they teach. I learned …

The Presidential Election In Illinois: 2016 Compared To 2012 And 2008., John Jackson

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

This paper describes and analyzes the 2016 general election results in Illinois and compares those results to the 2012 and 2008 presidential elections. The primary unit of analysis in this paper is the 102 counties in Illinois and the aggregate vote results at the state and county level. Those aggregate data voting returns are supplemented with statewide survey data taken from the Paul Simon Institute’s periodic polls which allows an individual voter level of analysis to add to the aggregate data.

Post Occupancy Evaluation An Academic Building: Lessons To Learn, Reza T. Ahmadi, Diana Saiki, Charles Ellis Jan 2017

Post Occupancy Evaluation An Academic Building: Lessons To Learn, Reza T. Ahmadi, Diana Saiki, Charles Ellis

Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts

Post occupancy evaluation (POE) is a tool used to determine the users’ satisfaction of a building after its completion. Most educational facilities do not conduct a post occupancy evaluation due to the absence of it in the contract agreement between the institution and architect. The client often chooses to bypass the POE to reduce the cost of the project. The purpose of this research is to conduct a POE of an academic building and identify areas of user dissatisfaction in order to enhance future projects. An academic building on a major, Midwestern university campus was remodeled during the academic year …

Derivation Of The Exponential Distribution Through An Infinite Sine Series, Todd C. Headrick, Michael E. May Jan 2017

Derivation Of The Exponential Distribution Through An Infinite Sine Series, Todd C. Headrick, Michael E. May

Publications

This communication provides a derivation of the often-used oneparameter exponential family of distributions based on an infinite sine series. The main results associated with this derivation are the finite approximations of the probability density function (pdf) and the cumulative distribution function (cdf) of the exact one-parameter exponential family of distributions. The limit of these finite functions are the exact pdf and cdf. Numerical examples are provided to compare and contrast the finite approximations of distributions in terms of error using the finite-based cdf and the exact standard exponential cdf. We would also note that the finite approximations of the pdf …

The Impact Of L1 Writing System On Esl Knowledge Of Vowel And Consonant Spellings, Katherine I. Martin Jan 2017

The Impact Of L1 Writing System On Esl Knowledge Of Vowel And Consonant Spellings, Katherine I. Martin

Articles

Orthographic knowledge, the general ability to learn, store, and use information about the orthographic form of words (Stanovich & West, 1989), is a crucial skill for supporting literacy. Although the development of first language (L1) orthographic awareness is impacted by the characteristics of a learner’s L1 writing system, relatively little is known about what impact the L1 may have on second language (L2) orthographic awareness. In this study, English language learners from three L1s (French, Hebrew, Mandarin Chinese), plus L1 English speakers, were tested on their English spelling knowledge using a word-pseudohomophone discrimination task. In addition to allowing for the …

Student-Athletes' Perceptions Of Athletic Trainers, Richard W. Brainerd Iii

Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to look at the perceptions student-athletes at Southern Illinois University have about their athletic trainers. Data was collected from 86 student-athletes at a NCAA Division I, mid-major university. The participants were administered an 11-question perception questionnaire. The perceptions scores of student-athletes with a full-time athletic trainer were compared to student-athletes with a graduate assistant athletic trainer. The results showed that both groups had a high mean perception score with no significant difference. The mean perception score for all 86 student-athletes was 28.14 (SD = 2.49) out of a total score of 33. Student-athletes …
