Sensitivity And Specificity Of An Executive Function Screener At Identifying Children With Adhd And Reading Disability., Justin E Karr, Michelle Y Kibby, Audreyana C Jagger-Rickels, Mauricio A Garcia-Barrera

Publications

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the sensitivity/specificity of a global sum score (GSS) from the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Second Edition, Executive Function screener (BASC-2-EF) at classifying children with/without ADHD and/or reading disability (RD).

METHOD: The BASC-2 Teacher/Parent Rating Scales (TRS/PRS) were completed for children (8-12 years old; 43.1% female) with no diagnosis ( n = 53), RD ( n = 34), ADHD ( n = 85), co-morbid RD/ADHD ( n = 36), and other diagnoses ( n = 15). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses evaluated the sensitivity/specificity of the BASC-2-EF GSS at discriminating between children with/without ADHD or …

“You Don’T Have To Call Me Darlin, Darlin”: How Evidentiary Proof Models Have Confused Courts In Employment Discrimination Cases, Kristen Southworth Mar 2018

“You Don’T Have To Call Me Darlin, Darlin”: How Evidentiary Proof Models Have Confused Courts In Employment Discrimination Cases, Kristen Southworth

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Oritz v. Werner Enter. Inc exemplifies the complexity and uncertainty plaguing employment discrimination law.  Widespread confusion exists, and courts, scholars, and attorneys have expressed the need for a unified method of analyzing such cases.  Despite acknowledgement of the disunity, Congress and courts have failed to provide an adequate alternative.  Rather, in attempting to do so, Congress only increased the confusion and asymmetry among the courts.  Ortiz began to rectify the situation by bringing into focus the ultimate issue that must be addressed and minimizing the use of frameworks that muddle the issue.

This Note argues that the Supreme Court should …

Perspectives And Researcher Experiences Of Undergraduate Research, Steven C. Goetz, Matthew J. Romero, Michael F. Robertson

Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts

Extracurricular undergraduate research seems to improve student success in academic programs, but little research has been conducted in aviation settings to support this phenomenon.

This study aims to address the gap in the body of research by investigating the experiences of aviation students who have participated in extracurricular research at the undergraduate level. This case study, conducted within a large aviation program at a mid-sized Midwestern university, qualitatively examines the perceptions and experiences of these students.

Comparison Of New Metrics For Assessment Of Risks Of Occupational Noise, Wisam Al-Dayyeni, Jun Qin Jan 2018

Comparison Of New Metrics For Assessment Of Risks Of Occupational Noise, Wisam Al-Dayyeni, Jun Qin

Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common occupational related health problems worldwide. Exposure to excessive noise is the major avoidable cause of permanent hearing loss. The conventional metrics for noise evaluation cannot accurately assess the exposure risks to high-level complex noise, which commonly occurs in many industrial and military fields. Recently, we have developed two advanced models, an adaptive weighting (F-weighting) and a complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model, to evaluate the risks of occupational noise. In this study, we compared performances of five noise assessment metrics, including F-weighted sound pressure level (SPL) LFeq, CVL …

Which Neuropsychological Functions Predict Various Processing Speed Components In Children With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder?, Sarah A Vadnais, Michelle Y Kibby, Audreyana C Jagger-Rickels

Publications

We identified statistical predictors of four processing speed (PS) components in a sample of 151 children with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Performance on perceptual speed was predicted by visual attention/short-term memory, whereas incidental learning/psychomotor speed was predicted by verbal working memory. Rapid naming was predictive of each PS component assessed, and inhibition predicted all but one task, suggesting a shared need to identify/retrieve stimuli rapidly and inhibit incorrect responding across PS components. Hence, we found both shared and unique predictors of perceptual, cognitive, and output speed, suggesting more specific terminology should be used in future research on PS in …

Institutionalizing Society’S Commitment To Child Well-Being, Lynn D. Wardle Jan 2018

Institutionalizing Society’S Commitment To Child Well-Being, Lynn D. Wardle

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

“Protecting children is a top priority” was a headline in an American newspaper recently.  The headline and accompanying commentary—written by a member of the Minnesota state legislature—expressed a sentiment that is widely supported in the United States of America and in most nations around the world.  Similarly, the director of a British child services agency recently declared: “We need to think about the child’s physical safety, social safety, emotional safety—their whole wellbeing both at home and in the school environment.  Again, the sentiment is nearly universal.  In principle, nearly everyone agrees that the well-being of children should be given top …

Impact Of Client Criminal History: Barriers To Consider For The Rehabilitation Counselor, Brent Van Ham Jan 2018

Impact Of Client Criminal History: Barriers To Consider For The Rehabilitation Counselor, Brent Van Ham

Research Papers

For people navigating the world with a disability, the presence of a criminal record may present them with yet another challenge to function within their lives to the fullest extent possible. The prevalence of people who seek rehabilitative services who have criminal records may require counselors to have more knowledge of the barriers that they frequently encounter. The rehabilitation counselor who works with these clients must take these barriers into account when planning and implementing services for them, just as they must take into account other barriers that are socially derived, such as discrimination in all of its forms and …

The Failed Application Of Just War Doctrine To Cyberwarfare, Dalton E. Runyon Jan 2018

The Failed Application Of Just War Doctrine To Cyberwarfare, Dalton E. Runyon

Research Papers

Just War Theory has not followed with the most recent evolution of warfare. The last iteration of Just War Theory was created by Michael Walzer following the evolution of the tools of war in World War II. The current status of jus ad bellum and jus in bello are only applicable to conventional warfare, as this paper will show. Many current problems exist when attempting to analyze cyber attacks including the necessity of a proper definition, the determination of use of force, and how cyber attacks can be addressed in the future. These problems must be addressed so states can …

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Children With Autism, Tiffany Thomas Dec 2017

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Children With Autism, Tiffany Thomas

Theses

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive lifelong developmental delay with a prevalence of 1 in 68 children. This growing epidemic occurs for unspecified causes and researchers continue to explore evidence-based treatments available. Parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a parent training program, initially developed for implementation with typically-developing children. PCIT has shown effectiveness in increasing child compliance, minimizing disruptive problem, improving parent-child relationship satisfaction, and communication. The present study investigated the efficacy of PCIT as an evidence-based practice (EBP) for children with ASD by implementing a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across three participants. Results indicated socially significant increases in child …

Music To Our Eyes: Assessing The Role Of Experience For Multisensory Integration In Music Perception, Robert Edward Graham Dec 2017

Music To Our Eyes: Assessing The Role Of Experience For Multisensory Integration In Music Perception, Robert Edward Graham

Dissertations

Based on research on the “McGurk Effect” (McGurk & McDonald, 1976) in speech perception, some researchers (e.g. Liberman & Mattingly, 1985) have argued that humans uniquely interpret auditory and visual (motor) speech signals as a single intended audiovisual articulatory gesture, and that such multisensory integration is innate and specific to language. Our goal for the present study was to determine if a McGurk-like Effect holds true for music perception as well, as a domain for which innateness and experience can be disentangled more easily than in language. We sought to investigate the effects of visual musical information on auditory music …
