Interventions Addressing Moral Distress In Acute Care Nurses: A Systematic Review, Maira Alejandra Harris, Sarah Owens, Louis Baser, Jean Edward Sep 2026

Interventions Addressing Moral Distress In Acute Care Nurses: A Systematic Review, Maira Alejandra Harris, Sarah Owens, Louis Baser, Jean Edward

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background. Moral distress (MoD), or psychological distress resulting from acting against one’s ethics, and its consequences is a growing concern in healthcare. Nurses experiencing MoD are at greater risk of experiencing burnout, workplace stress and fatigue, anxiety, and depression. There is a gap in the literature regarding MoD interventions in nurses working in the acute care setting. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify interventions that reduce MoD in registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) working in the acute care setting.

Methods. We searched PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO in September 2025. Search string results revealed 3,637 …

Understanding Critical Care Nurses’ Experiences While Caring For Dying Patients, Danna Leigh Curcio Sep 2026

Understanding Critical Care Nurses’ Experiences While Caring For Dying Patients, Danna Leigh Curcio

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Nurses are the caretakers that have the most contact with patients and families above any other member of the healthcare team. Nurses provide care to dying patients as part of professional and occupational responsibilities, potentially creating a stressful environment. It is important to understand how nurses psychologically adapt while providing care and support. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative research study was to explore, describe, and understand the experiences of nurses caring for dying patients in critical care. The study employed semi-structured face-to-face interviews utilizing naturalistic inquiry and a content analysis approach. A purposeful sampling of nine critical care nurses, …

Older Population-Based Resilience: An Evolutionary Analysis Via Complex Adaptive Systems, Po-Chung Feng Sep 2026

Older Population-Based Resilience: An Evolutionary Analysis Via Complex Adaptive Systems, Po-Chung Feng

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: To clarify the concept of older population-base resilience to support nursing research, public health planning, and healthy aging strategies.

Background: Older population-based resilience is an important concept for facilitating the adaptation of aging populations to multifaceted adversity networks. While extensive studies has examined resilience among older adults across diverse systems, hierarchical levels, and dimensional perspectives, the conceptual discourse has focused mainly on the individual level. A comprehensive articulation of population-level resilience attributes has been notably absent from the literature. Consequently, establishing a precise conceptualization of Older Population-Based Resilience constitutes an imperative scholarly endeavor.

Methods: A systematic literature search was …

Developing The Self-Care Guilt Scale, Mary Lynn Fahey Sep 2026

Developing The Self-Care Guilt Scale, Mary Lynn Fahey

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: A qualitative study (Fahey, 2023) using Story Theory identified "self-care guilt"—moral distress when engaging in health activities—as a barrier to wellbeing among fathers of children with ASD. This proposed study will develop and validate the first instrument measuring this construct.

Background: Fathers of children with ASD experience depression 3x general population rates (Hoyle et al., 2021) yet show lowest self-care engagement among caregivers (Martinez et al., 2021). Our preliminary work revealed guilt transforms self-care from stress-reducer to stressor, making traditional interventions paradoxically harmful. No existing measure captures guilt as self-care barrier.

Theoretical Framework: Story Theory (Smith & Liehr, 2018) …

Examining Social Support Among Black Dementia Caregivers In The Greater Toronto Area, Deanna Marie Black Sep 2026

Examining Social Support Among Black Dementia Caregivers In The Greater Toronto Area, Deanna Marie Black

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Dementia affects more than 55 million people globally and disproportionately impacts Black populations due to inequities in healthcare access. In Canada, Black communities face higher dementia risk and greater barriers to timely, culturally aligned care. In the Greater Toronto Area, Black caregivers carry major responsibilities while navigating fragmented services shaped by race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Although social support reduces caregiver burden, little is known about how Black caregivers access and use support within intersecting social and structural constraints.

Purpose: This study will examine how Black adult caregivers in the Greater Toronto Area construct, access, and mobilize social support …

Navigating The Midlife Shift: Menopause, Motherhood, And Meaning In Women’S Lives, Michelle M. Ness

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Midlife represents a dynamic and often disorienting transition for women, marked by the convergence of menopause, shifting family roles, and evolving professional identities. This mixed-methods study explores how women navigate these intersecting experiences, particularly focusing on the impact of menopausal symptoms on motherhood, work, and relational well-being.

Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 42 women aged 39–57. Thematic analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s framework, integrating inductive and deductive coding strategies. Themes were identified and refined through an iterative analytic process, ensuring credibility and depth through careful attention to patterns and meaning across participant narratives. Four key themes emerged: …

Owning The Mission: Reconciling The Past, While Implementing The Science Of Reading In An Education Preparation Program, Paula J. Adams

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This reflective inquiry examines the first year of a two-year initiative to more explicitly align an established educator preparation program with the Science of Reading (SoR). Situated within a small private university in New York State, the article considers implementation as both curricular revision and institutional change. The process included faculty professional learning, curriculum mapping, alignment of student learning outcomes, revision of common course assessments, development of SoR-aligned models of candidate work, and consideration of clinical experiences. Particular attention is given to tensions that emerged around policy fatigue, academic freedom and responsibility, differing professional cultures, candidates’ prior experiences with literacy …

Building On Sand: Ai Law And The Failures Of Alignment, Claire Boine Sep 2026

Building On Sand: Ai Law And The Failures Of Alignment, Claire Boine

Journal of Science & Technology Law

AI alignment is increasingly in the spotlight. However, from a technical concept, the term has been broadened to cover all sorts of potential harms by advanced AI systems. This Article disambiguates three different problems: ensuring that systems pursue intended objectives through acceptable means, deciding which values should guide their behavior, and governing private companies whose incentives diverge from those of society. Drawing on technical research and documented incidents, the Article explains why goal alignment deserves serious attention without requiring claims about human-like intelligence. It then shows how value alignment can reframe normative conflict as an engineering problem and divert attention …

Misplaced Trust In Artificial Professional Advice, Claudia Haupt Sep 2026

Misplaced Trust In Artificial Professional Advice, Claudia Haupt

Journal of Science & Technology Law

The professional relationship constitutes a distinctive social interaction in which the professional has knowledge that the client or patient lacks but needs to make important decisions. A specific legal and ethical framework governs this relationship. Traditionally, this framework assumes interactions between human actors and is designed to safeguard normative values inherent to human-centered professional advice-giving. Prominent among the foundational assumptions are expectations of competence, loyalty, and trust. Individuals seeking professional advice expect to receive accurate and comprehensive advice reflecting the insights of the profession.

This Essay examines the social relationship based on knowledge asymmetries and trust underlying the human professional …

The Impact Of Provider Medication Reconciliation Education On Hospital Readmissions In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Vivian Nwozu Sep 2026

The Impact Of Provider Medication Reconciliation Education On Hospital Readmissions In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Vivian Nwozu

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Aging causes frailty and multiple comorbidities, necessitating polypharmacy. Complicated drug regimens predispose patients to adverse drug events and hospital readmissions. The practice problem was high rates of medication-related readmissions due to inadequate provider knowledge of medication reconciliation and the lack of a standardized tool. This project aimed at evaluating the impact of provider medication reconciliation education on hospital readmissions in a skilled nursing facility. A pretest-posttest study design was utilized. The Donabedian Model of Healthcare Quality guided the translation of evidence into practice, whereas Lewin’s Change Model and Plan-Do-Study-Act models guided implementation. Eight providers were educated on medication reconciliation using …

Cartelized Parliament And The Decline Of Legislative Oversight In Indonesia’S Multiparty Presidentialism, Shanty Kartika Dewi, Anis Fuad

Jurnal Wacana Politik

This article examines the tendency of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR RI) in the 2024–2029 term to move toward a cartelized parliament within Indonesia’s multiparty presidential system. It addresses how the dominance of an oversized governing coalition after the 2024 election weakens parliamentary opposition and reduces the effectiveness of checks and balances over the executive. The study employs a qualitative explanatory approach using a single-case study design, process tracing, and documentary analysis. The data are drawn from official state and parliamentary documents, KPU decisions, legislative agendas, democracy monitoring reports, credible media coverage, and public statements by political elites. The findings …

Automated Childrearing Through Ai Companions, Katharine B. Silbaugh Sep 2026

Automated Childrearing Through Ai Companions, Katharine B. Silbaugh

Journal of Science & Technology Law

Can we develop a method of regulating AI to protect families, households, children, and relationships? We want AI to do the dishes, not to raise our children. Scholars in family law and family dynamics in sociology and economics have worked to refine and explain characterizations of family life in ways that might help to formulate the challenges ahead. Where a characterization of family life is too thin, these scholarly efforts let us see the costs of conventional or incomplete understandings. For example, just because we are at home, doesn’t mean we aren’t working. Just because it is with and for …

Recharging Pacu Essential Skills Through An Annual Back-To-Basics Bootcamp, Rona Khadka

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Post-Anesthesia Care Units (PACUs) require nurses to rapidly assess and manage patients emerging from anesthesia, often responding to airway concerns, hemodynamic instability, and unexpected clinical deterioration. Walter 3 PACU is a high-acuity, 24/7 unit caring for 45–55 postoperative cases daily across multiple surgical specialties. When staffing is supported by on-call staff including RNs from other PACUs during nights and weekends, nurses may experience anxiety and uncertainty when working outside their home environment. To strengthen confidence and essential clinical skills, Walter 3 launched its Back-to-Basics Bootcamp, an annual education initiative focused on reinforcing core emergency management competencies in a supportive learning …

Transforming Nursing Education Through Pex, Andrea Harrow Sep 2026

Transforming Nursing Education Through Pex, Andrea Harrow

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Patient experience is a cornerstone of healthcare quality, influencing outcomes, reputation, and reimbursement. Despite its importance, many organizations struggle to integrate patient experience strategies into nursing education and leadership development. This project addressed that gap by leveraging Guest Relations (GR) and Patient Experience (PEX) initiatives to strengthen nursing competencies and leadership skills within a large health system.

Background: Research links patient experience to safety, quality, and financial performance. Communication, empathy, and service recovery are essential skills for nurses and leaders. The National League for Nursing (NLN) emphasizes leadership and quality improvement as core competencies, yet few studies explore integrating GR …

Relational Safety In Practice: Examining How Nurses And Patients Co-Create Safe Clinical Encounters, Jitana P. Benton-Lee Sep 2026

Relational Safety In Practice: Examining How Nurses And Patients Co-Create Safe Clinical Encounters, Jitana P. Benton-Lee

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Psychological safety is central to patient-centered care and effective nurse-patient relationships. When relational safety is present, patients report better experiences, outcomes, and trust, and nurses benefit from strengthened confidence and teamwork. However, the relational processes through which psychological safety is co-created in acute care remain insufficiently described.

This study examined the emotional, cognitive, and social processes that shape psychological safety within nurse-patient relationships and explored how relational safety emerges and influences care experiences. The study sought to generate theoretical insights explaining how relational safety emerges, is negotiated, and influences care experiences in acute care environments.

Using a constructivist grounded theory …

Staff Education On Early Cpi-Based De-Escalation Strategies And Unit-Based Resources, Doris Onyenji Lerama Sep 2026

Staff Education On Early Cpi-Based De-Escalation Strategies And Unit-Based Resources, Doris Onyenji Lerama

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This doctoral project was a staff education evidence-based practice initiative implemented at a state-operated adult inpatient psychiatric facility in California. The practice gap was inconsistent nursing staff knowledge of early Crisis Prevention Intervention-based de-escalation strategies and available unit-based resources despite an established crisis-prevention framework. The practice-focused question asked whether a standardized staff education activity would increase staff knowledge, as measured by anonymous pre-education and immediate post-education scores. The purpose was to develop, implement, and evaluate the education using staff knowledge change as the sole measurable outcome. The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Model guided appraisal and synthesis of 11 evidence sources …

Oral Health Provider's Perspective: The Impact Of Public Health Programs Improving Patients' Access In Marginalized Communities, Bridgette Long Hickey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Access to public oral healthcare in Alabama’s Black Belt Region has been a persistent systemic challenge for working poor adults ages 19–64. This population continues to face barriers to oral healthcare because of socioeconomic disparities, geographic isolation, lack of insurance, provider shortages, limited infrastructure, and the need to travel long distances for quality or specialized services. This study investigated whether public health programs have improved access to oral healthcare for working poor adults in rural communities, from the perspective of oral healthcare providers. The Social Ecological Model served as the theoretical framework. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 13 …

Exploring Stigma In Access To Treatment For Women With Co-Occurring Substance Use And Sex Addiction, Maria Alejandra Knox-Lugo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite the high prevalence of substance use disorder among adult women in the United States, treatment engagement remains low, particularly for women experiencing co-occurring substance use disorder and compulsive sexual behavior. Although stigma is a documented barrier for individuals with substance use or compulsive sexual behavior in accessing and remaining engaged in behavioral health services, its effects on treatment access for adult women with co-occurring substance and compulsive sexual behavior have not been adequately scrutinized. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore how human services and behavioral health professionals perceive stigma experienced by adult women with co-occurring …

Counselors-In-Training’S Perceptions Of Counselor Educators’ And Supervisors’ Roles In Developing Grief Counseling Self-Efficacy, Tonya Andrews Sep 2026

Counselors-In-Training’S Perceptions Of Counselor Educators’ And Supervisors’ Roles In Developing Grief Counseling Self-Efficacy, Tonya Andrews

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Counselors-in-training (CITs) encounter grieving clients despite limited grief-specific preparation. Understanding these experiences could inform preparation for supporting grieving clients. Guided by Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study explored these perceptions. The purposive sample included 10 CITs who were master’s-level students completing field experience or postgraduate counselors under clinical supervision, lacked independent licensure, attended or graduated from Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)–accredited programs without required stand-alone grief coursework. None had a direct supervisory, instructional, or evaluative relationship with the researcher. The research question was: How did CITs perceive and make meaning of the role …

Cognitive Impairment In Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension: A Conceptual Framework And Therapeutic Implications, Brandon Shin, Vishnu Achyuth Suresh, Nicholas Borg Sep 2026

Cognitive Impairment In Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension: A Conceptual Framework And Therapeutic Implications, Brandon Shin, Vishnu Achyuth Suresh, Nicholas Borg

Student Publications

Background: Cognitive impairment is an increasingly recognized but poorly understood manifestation of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Although deficits in attention, executive functioning, memory, processing speed, and reaction time have been reported, the characteristics, trajectory, and underlying mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction remain incompletely defined. Interpretation of the literature is limited by heterogeneity in study design, variability in neurocognitive assessment methods, and the absence of standardized cognitive outcome measures. Consequently, cognitive morbidity is overlooked in clinical practice and is not incorporated into treatment decision-making, which remains centered around visual outcomes and papilledema.

Methods: In this narrative review, we synthesize evidence from IIH …
