The Church And Michael Brown: The Influence Of Christianity On Racialized Political Attitudes In Ferguson, Missouri, Tyler Chance
The Church And Michael Brown: The Influence Of Christianity On Racialized Political Attitudes In Ferguson, Missouri, Tyler Chance
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
This study examines whether the Christian faith played a pacifying or inspiring role in racialized politics following the death of Michael Brown and subsequent uprisings in Ferguson, Missouri. To evaluate the role of religion in responding to racialized crisis, the author examines both the attitudes of individual citizens and the actions of faith leaders. Using data gathered from two exit polls conducted by the author in Ferguson and the surrounding area during the period between the death of Michael Brown and the decision not to indict the officer who killed him and then again after the grand jury decision, the …

Survey Of Illinois Law: Illinois Name, Image, & Likeness Statute And Three Reasons Why Athletes Must Become Educated In Business To Properly Monetize On Their Celebrity, Sivonnia Debarros
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The Illinois General Assembly’s recent passage of the Illinois Name, Image, and Likeness (“NIL”) legislation allows student-athletes to remove the pressure of becoming professional athletes to capitalize on their athletic ability and celebrity.
The new NIL era is a great opportunity for many struggling and hopeful student-athletes to reset their mental focus on what their future can be. However, along with the excitement, is also the underlying mental and physical commitment athletes must attend to pull off great success with NIL that does not undermine their eligibility, the school’s rules, and guidelines, or statutory prohibitions.
As athletes seek financial opportunities …

Decentralizing The Music Industry: New Media Create Gateways For Independent Musicians, Jessica Carr
Decentralizing The Music Industry: New Media Create Gateways For Independent Musicians, Jessica Carr
Research Papers
Throughout most of the twentieth century, major record labels were the gatekeepers to mainstream music. They controlled every aspect of the music industry, from artist recruitment through final music production and distribution. However, technological progress and the creation of new media platforms near the turn of the twenty-first century caused major disruptions to the traditional methods previously used by record labels to maintain control over music production, distribution, and monetization.
This research aims to explore how the creation of new media has disrupted traditional strategies utilized by major record labels, and how technology has helped to create gateways for independent …

Companies are focusing on creating a successful corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaign to appeal to and appease consumers and shareholders alike. As the business model gains its notoriety, scholars, and practitioners have studied consumers’ preferences of CSR messaging by different cultural backgrounds. However, with globalization in mind, consumers’ are now bicultural and more globally conscious thanks to the advancement of technology. Very little research investigates the impact of consumers’ CSR preferences while considering consumers’ global consciousness and their identity in relation to others. This leads me to propose a research investigating the interactions between consumers’ self-construals, the globality of CSR …

A Comparative Analysis Of Florida Universities’ Connections Between Nil And Life Skills For Student-Athletes, Kevin Kendrick
Ed.D. Capstone Reports
Amateurism, as it applies to student-athletes, is the contention that student-athletes should take part in sports as a hobby as opposed to compensation. The NCAA mandates students shall and ought to compete without salary to preserve their amateur status (Lemons, 2014). The NCAA also supposes any compromise to this status will result in the disqualification of student-athletes in any future college-level competitions. According to the NCAA, “No student shall represent a college in any intercollegiate game or context … who has at any time received money or any other consideration, directly or indirectly” (NCAA, 2013).
According to the NCAA constitution, …
Gamification Via App-Based Rewards Systems: Behavioral Changes And Effects On User Interactions, Eric Michael Halfacre
Gamification Via App-Based Rewards Systems: Behavioral Changes And Effects On User Interactions, Eric Michael Halfacre
Research Papers
User retention and consistent engagement can be difficult with many applications vying for our limited time and attention. Finding innovative ways to draw in new users while appealing to current users also causes many developmental and marketing hurdles. Incorporating games, especially for those who have grown up with a controller in their hands, can be an incentive to gamify activities that award users just for participating. These processes can incentivize and reinforce participatory habits to better the users' lives or can also be a detriment with unforeseen effects.
This research aims to analyze and assess game-based systems used to change …

The Role Of The European Union In The Promotion Of Western Balkan “Stabilitocracies:” Case Study Of Serbia, Aleksandra Kozovic
The Role Of The European Union In The Promotion Of Western Balkan “Stabilitocracies:” Case Study Of Serbia, Aleksandra Kozovic
Research Papers
In recent years, several regional experts have supported the term “stabilitocracy” to describe the current state of the relationship between the European Union and the Western Balkans, and to depict the autocracies with clear democratic shortcomings who staunchly claim their commitment to democratic reforms. A “stabilitocracy” is believed to represent a significant shortcoming of the EU’s vision to expand the Union and get the former Yugoslav states to maintain peace, align on foreign policy issues and join the European market. Granted, with the exclusion of occasional skirmishes and threatening statements from the regional leaders, after a decade-long war that resulted …
Federal Sentencing Guidelines: The Continuous Line Between Unwarranted Disparities And Institutional Discretion In Federal Sentencing, Miaya Scott
Research Papers
In 1984, the Federal Sentencing Reform Act was signed into law. This act of reformation set a new standard of mandatory minimum federal sentencing guidelines for anyone who was convicted of an unlawful crime. Under the Federal Sentencing Reform Act, Congress created a new agency, the United States Sentencing Commission. As a bi-partisan, independent agency, the United States Sentencing Commission set the standard of guidelines with the objective to decrease unwarranted disparities within the federal system. Federal Supreme Court cases like United States v Booker overturned federal guidelines moving them mandatory to advisory based on a Sixth Amendment violation. With …
Patriotic Media And The Consequences Of Nationalism, Nicholas Knappenburger
Patriotic Media And The Consequences Of Nationalism, Nicholas Knappenburger
Research Papers
The topic of this paper will be patriotic media (specifically American blockbuster movies) that propagate the narrative of inherent goodness in the United States, its armed forces, and its foreign policy. Through examination of texts on nationalism, propaganda, and its influence on the twentieth century, I aim to draw parallels to modern-day patriotism in the media. The goal being to discover if the patriotic media the American populace consumes is making them more supportive of the American armed forces and our international impact. I will also examine what factors found in patriotic media are elements most likely to cause this …
Biden, Trump, Durbin, And Taxes: The 2020 Election In Illinois, John Jackson, John Foster
Biden, Trump, Durbin, And Taxes: The 2020 Election In Illinois, John Jackson, John Foster
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
This paper provides a summary of the 2020 presidential race, both nationally and in Illinois. It also analyzes the U.S. Senate race in Illinois and the referendum on the graduated income tax proposal, which was Governor JB Pritzker’s highest policy priority for that year. The results are placed in the larger context of the deep polarization of America and Illinois. The analysis uses the results of the 1996 presidential election (Clinton vs. Dole) and senatorial election (Durbin vs. Salvi) and the 1998 gubernatorial election (Ryan vs. Poshard) as a baseline to demonstrate the profound geographical realignment of the two parties …

The All-American Christ, Mark St George
The All-American Christ, Mark St George
Research Papers
My research identifies the mythogenesis of the myth-hero, the All-American Christ. This figure is realized through motion pictures by fusing together the ideological strains of Judeo-Christian vicarious redemption, Biblical American Exceptionalism, and conservative, Muscular Christianity. Using the methodologies of historical criticism and American studies, I argue that the construction of this conservative myth represents a militant manifestation of theocratic media, and is evangelized in the 1971 Christ film, The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston.
Verbal Bullying In School: The Constitutional And Psychological Argument That Government Intervention Makes Things Worse, Artem M. Joukov, Samantha M. Caspar
Verbal Bullying In School: The Constitutional And Psychological Argument That Government Intervention Makes Things Worse, Artem M. Joukov, Samantha M. Caspar
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
American public schools and colleges work with law enforcement to curb bullying of almost any kind. These well-intended measures aim to protect students, yet they restrict broad categories of expression likely protected by the U.S. Constitution. With social media at their fingertips, pupils have endless ways to violate anti-bullying laws and regulations, and imposing these controls may legally harm the speaker more than it protects the psyche of the listener. We document how enforcing anti-bullying regulations in schools has done little to curb psychological problems among attendees and how it may rob them of certain opportunities to develop psychological coping …
Dershowitz Misses The Mark On Free Speech: A Critique Of The Case Against The New Censorship, Michael Conklin
Dershowitz Misses The Mark On Free Speech: A Critique Of The Case Against The New Censorship, Michael Conklin
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
This is a review of Alan Dershowitz’s new book, The Case Against the New Censorship. The book discusses novel points on the subject, such as how the demographics of anti-free speech advocates are cause for additional concern and some tactical advice for arguing in favor of free speech. Unfortunately, the problems present in the book outweigh these benefits. For example, public and private censorship is conflated throughout the book, and no practical solution to the alleged decrease in free speech is provided. This review mainly focuses on the importance of the public/private distinction, including what private companies such as Facebook …
A Tale Of Two Procedures: Federal And Illinois Pleading Requirements, Schuyler Frashier
A Tale Of Two Procedures: Federal And Illinois Pleading Requirements, Schuyler Frashier
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Civil procedure is a central part of the United States legal system. The federal rules of civil procedure are taught in law schools across the country to ensure that law students know the rules that govern courts. However, in the United States, there are at least fifty one different code of civil procedure. This note explores the differences between federal civil procedure and Illinois civil procedure by comparing motions to dismiss. Understanding the subtle differences in federal and state civil procedure can have an important impact on the outcome of cases.
Who Decides: What The Constitution Says About Parental Authority And The Rights Of Minor Children To Seek Gender Transition Treatment, F. Lee Francis
Who Decides: What The Constitution Says About Parental Authority And The Rights Of Minor Children To Seek Gender Transition Treatment, F. Lee Francis
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Transgender advocates argue that minor children ought to be able to make their own decisions regarding transition. Advocates further argue that such a choice should be permitted without parental consent. The minor children’s transgender moment has the potential to drastically erode the traditional understanding of parental rights. What individuals such as Elliot Page, Caitlyn Jenner, and Laverne Cox all have in common is the fact that they were adults when they transitioned, not children. Children, this article asserts, are mentally incapable of understanding the full effect of transition and the damage inflicted by gender transition treatment and surgery.
As such, …

Importance Of Economic Freedom In Georgia’S Democratization Efforts, Dachi Mazanashvili
Research Papers
The breakup of the Soviet Union gave the 15 republics a unique chance to transform their states into democracies. Although more than 30 years later we are seeing very mixed results in the democratic transitions across the post-Soviet space. Despite overwhelming efforts from the scholars in this field to come up with comprehensive theories explaining the reasons behind such large variance in the degrees of democratization between the states, still, the discipline is quite far from providing us with a single firm answer to such crucial questions. This paper is therefore aiming to contribute to this debate through a qualitative …
