Ai And Gender In Persuasion: Using Chatbots To Prevent Driving Under The Influence Of Marijuana, Victoria Halfacre
Ai And Gender In Persuasion: Using Chatbots To Prevent Driving Under The Influence Of Marijuana, Victoria Halfacre
Research Papers
Will new media techniques, such as artificial intelligence (AI), help refresh public safety advertising campaigns and help better target specific populations, and aid in persuasive, preventative marketing? This paper used hypocrisy induction as a persuasive tool for standalone artificial intelligence chatbots to test potential behavioral change in the context of marijuana. This research further tested whether the chatbots' gender and language styles impact how persuasive and effective the chat agents are perceived to be using hypocrisy induction. An online experiment conducted with 705 participants (Mage = 42.9, 392 women). where participants interact with a chatbot that is manipulated …

“The Sky Is Falling, The Sky Is Falling”: Why Inciting Mass Psychological Panics Should Trigger Legal Liability, Jason P. Kight, David Scott
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
With a twenty four hour, seven days a week news cycle and social media leaders, activists and other groups have more access to the public than ever before. This access can lead to events known as mass psychological panics that can have devastating outcomes. In this paper two main cases were examined: Harold Camping and his religious zeal that led to a mass psychological panic, and QAnon which led to the storming of the US Capitol in January of 2021. This paper posits that there should be a federal statute criminalizing incitement via social media.
Fashion, Identity And The Muslim-American Narrative, Shireen Soliman
Fashion, Identity And The Muslim-American Narrative, Shireen Soliman
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
In this pivotal time, assumptions, boundaries, power structures and relationships within society are being reconsidered and reimagined. My research project, “Fashion, Identity and the Muslim- American Narrative” builds off of well-established prior models and responds to this moment. Through this multidisciplinary, multimedia design workshop series geared towards Muslim American female adolescents, we are able to leverage the powerful intersection of design, technology, community, social media and social justice. In this affirming, enlightening space, we use fashion, dress and personal narrative as the springboard and means of exploring the intrinsic connection between social and emotional issues surrounding identity development, social justice …
Aesthetic And Pedagogical Compasses: The Self In Motion, Liora Bresler
Aesthetic And Pedagogical Compasses: The Self In Motion, Liora Bresler
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This is a story of composing and being composed by “Aesthetics and curriculum”, a course I taught for 28 years at the University of Illinois. The course aimed at living with questions, as Rilke famously suggested, rather than seeking ultimate answers; heightened experience, wonder and exploration rather than mastery; creating openings rather than pre-destined knowledge. Tuning inward and outward were complementary processes that supported each other in a dynamic conversation involving artworks, the self, and aesthetic theories. We learned about ourselves in the process of encountering artworks and aesthetic theories, and, in turn, the encounter with our individual selves was …

The Bridge, Bonnie Berkowitz
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Abstract “The Bridge”
Stories That Mattered: Inspirited Stories and the Unfolding Arts Curriculum as a call for papers for Fall 2021 issue inspired this Art Therapy educator to consider and re-examine past teaching beliefs and practices, to underscore and understand with more clarity, how the dissonance between two styles of a classical Fine Arts and an Art Therapy Education became apparent in an Art Therapy graduate studio course. With a sharing of past experiences and ideology, Berkowitz writes about how the examination of quality and fears, about a fine arts critique and the nonjudgmental art discussion, highlight the need to …

The Role Of Social Media In The Development And Regulation Of Student Free Speech: Mahanoy Area School District V. B.L. (2021), Kailyn Stone
The Role Of Social Media In The Development And Regulation Of Student Free Speech: Mahanoy Area School District V. B.L. (2021), Kailyn Stone
Honors Theses
This Thesis evaluates the tension between the constitutional free speech rights of students and the rights of schools to maintain a controlled environment that is conducive to learning. The inception of the internet and social media has permanently altered the way that students communicate, impacting student free speech jurisprudence. The significance of evaluating student free speech rights lies in the protection of American schools as “nurseries of democracy”. In Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District (1969), the Supreme Court held that students possess First Amendment rights within the schoolhouse, however the Court has failed to provide clear guidance …
Biofortification As A Sustainable Solution For 'Hidden Hunger': Evaluating Its Impact On The Environment, Nutrition, Culture, And Ethics, Elysia Lewis
Honors Theses
Micronutrient malnutrition, also referred to as ‘hidden hunger’, negatively impacts the health of millions of people around the world. Because of this, several strategies to reduce malnutrition have been proposed, one of which is biofortification. The process of biofortification increases the nutrient content of plants during their vegetative life cycle. Research has been conducted that shows the ability of biofortification to increase micronutrient content in crops, so the next step is successful implementation and adoption by consumers. This paper reviews several publications that look at biofortification with respect to the environment, sustainability, human nutrition, culture, and ethics from a variety …

In The Absence Of A Uniform Biometric Law: A Proposal Comparing Current Biometric Laws, Issues, And Future Solutions, Loraina Trujillo
In The Absence Of A Uniform Biometric Law: A Proposal Comparing Current Biometric Laws, Issues, And Future Solutions, Loraina Trujillo
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Advancements in technology are always progressing, often without pause for necessary restrictions and limitations to protect against harm. Biometric information technology has quickly left the United States trailing behind without a federal statute to regulate and limit violations of privacy. This note discusses the advantages and disadvantages of biometric information technology and provides a brief overview of current biometric laws at the State level. It also argues a federal statute is necessary by providing a contrasting example of unregulated biometric information technology in China. After analyzing current proposed bills in Congress, this note offers an outline for a comprehensive federal …

The Necessity And Possibility Of Decolonizing The Understanding Of Chinese-Ness, Tao Zhang
The Necessity And Possibility Of Decolonizing The Understanding Of Chinese-Ness, Tao Zhang
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I explore how crossing national borders has made me aware of the many identity borders that I have crossed as a transnational Chinese, and how I am caught up in identity politics between the “Chinese,” who do not necessarily always identify as “Chinese” in the transnational context. However, as a racialized group in the U.S., transnational Chinese are perceived as a homogeneous population, usually through racially (“Yellow Peril” or “Chinese Virus”) and politically (“Red Scare”) charged lenses measured by Western/U.S. binaristic and hierarchical standards. Therefore, in this research project, I problematize dominant U.S. race logic, i.e., the …

Teaching A Social Science Course On Climate Change: Suggestions For Active Learning, Leslie A. Duram
Publications
Previous research indicates the importance of interdisciplinary approaches when teaching about climate change. Specifically, social science perspectives allow students to under-stand the policy, economic, cultural, and personal influences that impact environmental change. This article describes one such college course that employed active-learning techniques. Course topics included community resilience, environmental education, historical knowledge timeline, climate justice, social vulnerability, youth action, science communication, hope versus despair, misinformation, and climate refugees. To unify these concepts, engaging activities were devel-oped that specifically address relevant individual, local, state, national, and international climate resilience themes. Students assessed their personal climate footprint, explored social/cultural influences, wrote policy …

Telling The Atypical Truth: Disability Community-Building Through Podcasting, Erica Stearns
Telling The Atypical Truth: Disability Community-Building Through Podcasting, Erica Stearns
Honors Theses
The community of disabled and/or medically complex individuals represents a relatively small demographic worldwide; therefore, it is difficult for community members to find and build relationships with others directly within the local community whose lived experiences reflect their own. As a result, many individuals within the disabled and/or medically complex community experience isolation and depression. Social media and other digital resources often serve as a mechanism for community-building in such situations. Atypical Truth is a podcast that episodically explores a variety of topics that relate to life as caregivers, disabled individuals, and/or individuals with complex medical conditions.
I used …
“Mind, Body, & Soul”: The Medical Exploitations Of Black Women In The United States, Erikah Lewis
“Mind, Body, & Soul”: The Medical Exploitations Of Black Women In The United States, Erikah Lewis
Research Papers
African American women in the U.S. face persistent health disparities compared to other women of different ethnic backgrounds. Black women experience high infertility rates, high stigma of reproductive challenges, and social barriers when accessing health care. Although some improvements ensuring equitable healthcare have been attempted, social barriers remain relevant regarding racial bias and enforced stereotyped perceptions of Black women in health care. Overall, this study explores the deeper roots of medical exploitations of Black women and expands on the historical foundation of racism and stereotype perceptions, and how it has negatively influenced the present-day health outcomes of Black women. The …

Hormone Receptors And Steroidogenic Enzymes In Oocytes, Cumulus And Granulosa Cells, Follicular Fluid Hormone Milieu, And Follicle Blood Perfusion In Mares, Marilia Pastorello
Theses
Ovulatory follicle development and associated oocyte maturation involve complex coordinated molecular and cellular mechanisms not fully understood. This study addresses, for the first time in any species, the relationships among diameter, vascularization, follicular-fluid factors, and gene expression for follicle growth, steroidogenesis, angiogenesis and apoptosis in granulosa/cumulus cells and oocytes during different stages from the beginning of largest/ovulatory follicle to impending ovulation. Follicle dynamics was tracked and follicle-wall blood flow evaluated daily through transrectal ultrasonography in mares. The largest follicle of the ovulatory wave was distributed in six diameter groups (predeviation, deviation, postdeviation, early preovulatory, preovulatory, and impending ovulation) according to …
Characterization Of Proteostasis Mechanisms In Chlamydia Trachomatis, Amanda M. Blocker
Characterization Of Proteostasis Mechanisms In Chlamydia Trachomatis, Amanda M. Blocker
Theses
Chlamydia trachomatis is a gram negative, obligate intracellular pathogen with a highly reduced genome of ~1 Mbp. It is the leading cause of the reportable sexually transmitted infection known as chlamydia in the United States and is the leading cause of preventable blindness (trachoma) worldwide. While treatment of infections is possible, weaknesses of current approaches include treatment failure, antibiotic-induced dysbiosis, and resistance development of bystander bacteria during chlamydial treatment. These weaknesses support the need for improved therapeutic approaches. C. trachomatis undergoes a biphasic developmental cycle with two forms, the infectious elementary body (EB) and replicative reticulate body (RB), that have …

The survey asked about biographical data, evaluations of various speakers and ratings of accents of Turkish. Using a matched guise technique in the survey, a Kurdish …
The Making Of The Man’S Man: Stardom And The Cultural Politics Of Neoliberalism In Hindutva India, Soumik Pal
The Making Of The Man’S Man: Stardom And The Cultural Politics Of Neoliberalism In Hindutva India, Soumik Pal
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I trace the contours of state control and capital in India, starting from the 1970s and see how the state’s increasingly centralizing tendencies and authoritarianism, in the service of capital, creates cultures of violence, fatalism, desperation, and ultimately, even more desire for authoritarianism. I study male stardom in Bombay cinema, beginning withAmitabh Bachchan (who was the reigning star in the 1970s and 80s), and following up with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan (who have been successful stars from the early 90s), to understand how changing subjectivities, responding to changing socio-economic reality, were formulated and expressed through …
Flaxseed’S Paradoxical Role In Extending Lifespan And Reproductive Capacity In White Leghorn Laying Hens; And The Effect Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (Pufas) On Lipid Metabolism, Mitochondrial Bioenergetics And E-Cadherin Expression In Laying Hen Ovarian Tumors, William Christopher Weston
Dissertations
We are the first lab to report the occurrence of a diet-induced transsulfuration (TS) blockade associating with elevated S-adenosylmethionine (i.e. SAM) synthesis, enhanced lifespan and enhanced reproductive capacity, in a vertebrate animal model. In this paradoxical study, we used LC-MS/MS-derived metabolomics data to report the effects of flaxseed (Linum Usitatissimum) on one-carbon metabolism in White Leghorn laying hens (Gallus gallus). Flaxseed contains a vitamin B6-antagonizing molecule called ‘linatine’ that is particularly effective at reducing vitamin B6 levels in small rodents and poultry. Linatine reduces TS flux through its inhibition of the vitamin B6-dependent enzymes cystathionine beta synthase (CBS) and cystathionine …
The Effects Of Legalization Of Recreational Cannabis In Illinois, Stephanie Chambers-Baltz
The Effects Of Legalization Of Recreational Cannabis In Illinois, Stephanie Chambers-Baltz
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
In 2019, the Illinois House passed the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act that legalized the recreational use of cannabis. The Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act became law in the state of Illinois as of January 1, 2020, making Illinois the first state to establish such a law via state legislation, as opposed to a ballot measure approved by voters. This law allows adults aged 21 and older to legally purchase cannabis for recreational purposes. This law has significant implications for social equity and for public health. The Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act was intentionally designed to address and repair some …
