Data’S Entanglements: Artmaking As Corresponding Companion During Diffractive Analysis, Kelly Clark/Keefe Feb 2023

Data’S Entanglements: Artmaking As Corresponding Companion During Diffractive Analysis, Kelly Clark/Keefe

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This essay invites readers into two creative correspondences that emerged during the author’s involvement in a participatory arts-based research project called Life Lines. The Life Lines project aimed at engaging a small group of young adults alongside researchers in their use of multimodal arts practices to inquire into what makes young adult identity work work the way that it does. In Life Lines the phenomenon of identity and the approaches to inquiry used to explore it were conceptualized through a material feminist framework that proposes the co-constituting nature of meaning and matter (i.e., bodies, atmospheres, and objects of …

Smells Like Money: A Proposal To Re-Examine The Illinois Right-To-Farm Act, Callah Wright Jan 2023

Smells Like Money: A Proposal To Re-Examine The Illinois Right-To-Farm Act, Callah Wright

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Since 1973, every state has passed a Right-to-Farm Act (“RTFA”). These Acts are in place to (1) strengthen the legal position of farmers when neighbors take legal action for private nuisance; and (2) to protect farmers from local and state ordinances that restrict agriculture production. This Note argues that Illinois’ RTFA should be amended as the statute lacks clarity on many aspects and consistency throughout the state’s circuit courts. Further, the statute is silent on many issues that other states have included in their Acts, such as zoning, damage caps, a statute of limitations, and management requirements. Three states––North Carolina, …

The Unacknowledged Realities Of Extraterritorial Taxation, Laura Snyder Jan 2023

The Unacknowledged Realities Of Extraterritorial Taxation, Laura Snyder

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The U.S. extraterritorial tax system has evolved such that today it is more consequential than one century ago. The system, conceived in the stigmatization of overseas Americans, consists of highly penalizing taxation and banking policies that make it difficult for overseas Americans to live normally. The IRS is also a victim: it is unable to administer the system.

Many have sought to educate policymakers and the public. Detailed survey reports have been issued, documenting how overseas Americans experience the system. Research articles have been published, exposing certain problems of the system and, in some cases, proposing solutions. To date, such …

The Evaluation Of Juvenile Rehabilitative Approaches, Rylie Wheeler Jan 2023

The Evaluation Of Juvenile Rehabilitative Approaches, Rylie Wheeler

Research Papers

The current research seeks to evaluate current juvenile rehabilitative approaches and analyze their effectiveness in reducing juvenile offending behaviors. The juvenile justice system is analyzed from a historical perspective beginning prior to the establishment of the juvenile justice system in the 19th century and leading to the current approaches of the 21st century. Developmental research has found that most juveniles will desist from delinquency on their own by naturally growing out of their offending behavior. However, when juveniles become involved in the justice system the opportunity to age out of offending behavior is limited. Recognizing this, the juvenile …

Chicago Automated Red Light Enforcement Policy, Hailey Blanchard Jan 2023

Chicago Automated Red Light Enforcement Policy, Hailey Blanchard

Research Papers

As the use of automated speed enforcement expands, public debate remains over questions of equity around camera placement. When technological advances are made often the social impact lags behind the economic or legislative impact. In this paper, I examine the social equity of Chicago, Illinois speed camera enforcement. In this paper, I review the policy of red-light speed cameras in Chicago and the enforcement. Using publicly available data on the location of speed cameras and data on traffic accidents, I examine the placement of speed cameras in Chicago. I find that serious accidents are more likely in areas with higher …

An Examination Of The Complex Interplay Of Criminal Risk And Mental Health Functioning, Maris Adams Jan 2023

An Examination Of The Complex Interplay Of Criminal Risk And Mental Health Functioning, Maris Adams

Research Papers

The undeniable overrepresentation of individuals with serious mental illness in the criminal justice system is a complex matter. Despite persistent assumptions that mental illness is the source of criminal behavior, research has continued to find a weak relationship between mental illness and criminal behavior. As a result, researchers have contended that the seeming link between mental illness and violence is misleading and distracts from the presence of other factors (such as criminogenic risk) that have an established relationship to criminal behavior. The current review of literature will investigate serious mental illness among justice-involved persons, touching on the historical context, theorized …

Making Cents Of Child Support Calculations: A Guide For The Midwest, Kenzie R. Mooty Jan 2023

Making Cents Of Child Support Calculations: A Guide For The Midwest, Kenzie R. Mooty

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In 2017, Illinois switched from using a straight percentage formula when calculating monthly child support obligations to using a version of the “income shares” calculation. Under the income shares model, if a parent has their child for at least 40% of the overnights per year, their monthly child support obligation can be drastically reduced. This can lead to situations where parents fight for more time with their children simply because they want to have lower child support payments. With a variety of different child support calculation methods throughout the Midwest, Illinois should modify its current method to prevent children from …

Are You Her Nanny?, Ann Thomson Dec 2022

Are You Her Nanny?, Ann Thomson

Research Papers

This project aims to share the experience of a South Korean immigrant woman in the United States in her journey of adopting a White embryo through the medium of a photographic essay. In doing so, the objective is to explore how the changing ethnoscape of the world and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is bringing the world together, the ways in which it has created a provision for an inversion of adoption norms simultaneously enabling mother-child bonding experiences from conception to childbirth, which is largely lacking in traditional methods of adoption. Although there are benefits and possibilities created via ART, any …

Esg Is Fiduciary Duty, Katherine Held Dec 2022

Esg Is Fiduciary Duty, Katherine Held

Honors Theses

This Thesis defends the validity of ESG Investing (Environmental, Social, Governance Investing) as an advisor’s fiduciary responsibility. The financial industry is increasingly including ESG considerations when calculating the intrinsic value of a stock. In opposition to this valuation trend, nineteen state attorney generals (Nineteen) have attacked ESG, challenging its legality by claiming that it violates state and federal law and the fiduciary responsibilities that hold investment advisors accountable to their clients. After identifying key elements of fiduciary responsibility that are being ignored by the Nineteen’s position, several key and relevant United States statutes are reviewed and applied to their argument. …

Measuring Macroeconomic Shocks Of The Covid-19 Pandemic: An Empirical Analysis For Bhutan, Lekey Dorji Dec 2022

Measuring Macroeconomic Shocks Of The Covid-19 Pandemic: An Empirical Analysis For Bhutan, Lekey Dorji

Theses

Taking GDP growth and inflation as endogenous variables, this paper employs a Structural VAR from Baumeister and Hamilton (2015, 2019) to identify aggregate demand and aggregate supply shocks for Bhutan, focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic. The results suggest that 94 percent of the GDP growth plunge in 2020 is attributable to a fall in aggregate supply. The higher inflation during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 also implies a negative supply shock. Although the magnitudes differ, characterizing the COVID-19 pandemic in Bhutan as a supply shock coincides with preceding episodes that were also primarily driven by supply shocks.

Tracing The Roots Of Resistance, Collective Action And Solidarity Among Igbo Women, Sebastian Ukoh Dec 2022

Tracing The Roots Of Resistance, Collective Action And Solidarity Among Igbo Women, Sebastian Ukoh

Theses

Most societies have always achieved balance through some internal mechanisms. Achieving gender balance and drawing lines without letting what we may term the "stronger sex" domineer the "weaker sex" is not always easy. Among the Igbos of South Eastern Nigeria, the women have always pressed home their demands without fear. We will be looking at how they have done this for more than a century, especially at the onset of the British colonial enterprise.

Evolution Of The Decentralized Cryptocurrency: Case Study Of Shiba Inu Coin, Ibraheem Alghobari Nov 2022

Evolution Of The Decentralized Cryptocurrency: Case Study Of Shiba Inu Coin, Ibraheem Alghobari

Research Papers

Bitcoin and Ethereum have been the market leaders in the decentralized market for many years. Shiba Inu, on the other hand, has developed a destructive technology that has altered the working principles of previous coins. As an Ethereum-based alternative to Dogecoin (DOGE), the most popular meme coin, this cryptocurrency is designed to compete. The token differs from Bitcoin in that it was designed to be scarce because it was designed to be abundant, with a total supply of approximately one quadrillion. The token ecosystem also helps projects like Shibaswap, a decentralized exchange platform, and a non-fungible tokens (NFT) art incubator. …

Peer-reviewed Articles

Understanding the transition from quiescent primordial follicles to activated primary follicles is vital for characterizing ovarian folliculogenesis and improving assisted reproductive techniques. To date, no study has investigated preantral follicle crowding in the ovaries of livestock or characterized these crowds according to follicular morphology and ovarian location (portions and regions) in any species. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the crowding (clustering and neighborhood) patterns of preantral follicles in the equine ovary according to mare age, follicular morphology and developmental stage, and spatial location in the ovary. Ovaries from mares (n = 8) were collected at an abattoir and …

The Continued Problem Of Url Decay: An Updated Analysis Of Health Care Management Journal Citations, Susan M. Howell, Amber T. Burtis

Articles

Objective: This study updates a 2009 study which examined uniform resource locator (URL) decay in health care management journals and seeks to determine whether continued URL availability relates to publication date, resource type, or top-level domain. The authors also provide an analysis of differences in findings between the two study periods.

Methods: The authors collected the URLs of web-based cited references in articles published in five health care management source journals from 2016 to 2018. The URLs were checked to see if they were still active and then analyzed to determine if continued availability was related to publication date, resource …

Medical Martial Law: Towards A More Effective Pandemic Policy, John W. Bagby, Robert J. Aalberts, Chad G. Marzen Oct 2022

Medical Martial Law: Towards A More Effective Pandemic Policy, John W. Bagby, Robert J. Aalberts, Chad G. Marzen

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This article synthesizes the political-economic geography regime with existing political subdivision modeling to predict the legitimacy of various authorities that might order Medical Martial Law. Such “districting” authority, as limited by the Constitutional right to travel, reveals a range of authorities to declare and enforce remediation of emergencies under various legal frameworks within defined geographic areas. The primary interdisciplinary approach used here is public policy, political economy and economic geography. We demonstrate how the latter contributes greatly. First, the science of spatial understanding is offered by physical geographers for the physical barriers that shape political borders and may define contagion …

The Constitutionality Of Texas’ Executive Orders Impacting The U.S.–Mexico Border, Beckett Cantley, Geoffrey Dietrich Oct 2022

The Constitutionality Of Texas’ Executive Orders Impacting The U.S.–Mexico Border, Beckett Cantley, Geoffrey Dietrich

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

“Federalism, central to the constitutional design, adopts the principle that both the National and State Governments have elements of sovereignty the other is bound to respect. From the existence of two sovereigns follows the possibility that laws can be in conflict or at cross-purposes.” The Supremacy Clause “provides a clear rule that federal law shall be the supreme Law of the Land.” Under this principle, Congress may preempt state laws that interfere or conflict with federal laws. United States courts have held that issues of immigration, and as they relate to national security or border security, are clearly federal and …

Your Health; Your Responsibility, Angel Sanders Aug 2022

Your Health; Your Responsibility, Angel Sanders

Research Papers

Many believe racism doesn’t exist anymore. In fact, racism is still present, it’s evident in the black community when looking at health. Statistics show that black women specifically encounter more health issues than other races. This thesis touches on generational trauma, feminism, and health collectives. This is a tool for a person looking to heal themselves and start a new health journey. This research assures you don’t have to do this alone and is a step toward mitigation in the black community.

Reflections On The Adaptation Of A Postgraduate Degree In Water Management From In-Person To Remote Delivery, Murray Clamen, Emma Anderson, Johanna Dipple, Jan Adamowski Aug 2022

Reflections On The Adaptation Of A Postgraduate Degree In Water Management From In-Person To Remote Delivery, Murray Clamen, Emma Anderson, Johanna Dipple, Jan Adamowski

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic spurred the rapid adaptation of university course delivery to an online format. Though in-person delivery partially resumed in the Fall of 2021, future conditions may favor a return to, or addition of, remote delivery. It is therefore important for instructors, program directors, and institutions to capitalize on this learning opportunity and reflect on adaptation measures’ successes (and failures) to inform future online course design. The reworking of McGill University's Master of Science Program in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) provides a case study to evaluate the adaptation of remote teaching of water resource management. …

Hip Hop Music And Communicative Messages: Non-White Resistance Of Marginalization Experienced In America, Fatima Albrehi Jul 2022

Hip Hop Music And Communicative Messages: Non-White Resistance Of Marginalization Experienced In America, Fatima Albrehi

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The purpose of this research is to understand how non-white, marginalized races and/or ethnicgroups feel about utilizing hip hop music to address and combat structural violence. Structuralviolence includes any institutional, social, and political barriers that prevent equality. Twenty-six non-white participantswere recruited and asked to listen to and watch music videos for three contemporary hip hop songs: Nowhere Fast by Eminem ft. Kehlani (2017), This is Americaby Childish Gambino (2018), and Nothin’ Newby 21 Savage (2017). Participants then conversed with one another through a focus group session in which questions were asked about how they felt …

#Listentosurvivors: A Case Study Of Three Human Trafficking Awareness Campaigns On Twitter, Alex Rister Jul 2022

#Listentosurvivors: A Case Study Of Three Human Trafficking Awareness Campaigns On Twitter, Alex Rister

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Although human trafficking is a widespread issue impacting millions of people, anti-trafficking campaigns often misrepresent the problem. Media can distort the reality of trafficking and avoid addressing underlying issues such as violence against women. Digital activism is a critical strategy to accurately communicate human trafficking and in particular, Twitter is cited as important for such efforts. This case study examines 100 tweets from Polaris Project, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services, and End Slavery Now. A thematic analysis of 100 tweets was conducted to reveal three primary themes: realistic information of practical value, feminist voices and stories, and engagement with other …

Globalizing Sexual Violence: Charting A Path For Future Research, Adam J. Whiteside Jul 2022

Globalizing Sexual Violence: Charting A Path For Future Research, Adam J. Whiteside

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Sexual violence is a global issue with devastating consequences. Existing research primarily focuses on its prevalence globally or how countries understand sexual violence. Additionally, media reports often misrepresent sexual violence, fail to capture its complexities, and ignore larger gender issues at play. This article synthesizes extant research using a feminist intersectional approach to provide a basis for comparing how sexual violence is discursively constructed globally. More specifically, how historical, cultural, and socioeconomic discourses underscore the perpetration and media framing of sexual violence. To this end, I reviewed 49 articles on sexual violence in India and South Africa with an eye …

A Boring Day At The Clinic Is A Good Day At The Clinic: Narrative Inheritances Of Anti-Abortion Violence, Cassidy D. Ellis Jul 2022

A Boring Day At The Clinic Is A Good Day At The Clinic: Narrative Inheritances Of Anti-Abortion Violence, Cassidy D. Ellis

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper autoethnographically interrogates the author’s personal experience as an abortion clinic patient escort. Based in a performance paradigm, the author uses performative writing to articulate her experiences and to argue for an emphasis of the body and embodiment in scholarship on anti-abortion violence that centers patients and providers. Additionally, the paper articulates the ways in which anti-abortion violence is storied and narratively inherited by abortion providers, which affects their identity related to their abortion work. Finally, the author demonstrates how internalized and embodied narratives of anti-abortion violence manifest in fear of unpredictability.

Coats Of Fire: Rhetorical Identity Negotiations Of Feminist Evangelical Christians, Karly L. Poyner Jul 2022

Coats Of Fire: Rhetorical Identity Negotiations Of Feminist Evangelical Christians, Karly L. Poyner

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper examines the identity negotiations of undergraduate students who identify as both feminist and evangelical Christian. Studies of the negotiation of religious identities and social identities have primarily focused on contexts such as sexuality/religion, context/location, and culture/religion. This study, however, focuses on young adults attending private, religious universities while openly identifying as religious and feminist. By pinpointing Christian universities, this study uncovers an additional layer of tension, since these schools “arguably exert a stronger influence over their students than churches, religious denominations, or parachurch ministries” (Gardner, 2017, p. 33). From 14 interviews with feminist Christian students using Ting-Toomey’s INT …
