The Concern Over Qualified Creative Genius: A Look Into Eighteenth-Century Poetic Fancy, Alexandra D. Rude
The Concern Over Qualified Creative Genius: A Look Into Eighteenth-Century Poetic Fancy, Alexandra D. Rude
Research Papers
Using the non-fictional works of eighteenth-century authors like Dugald Stewart, James Beattie, and William Wordsworth in conjunction with the poetry of Charlotte Smith and Ann Radcliffe, among others, the eighteenth-century poetic “Fancy” develops as a representation of the period’s concern over genius and the imaginative mind. Fancy emerges as an entity which overcomes any gendered consideration, and acts as a powerful vessel in which contemplation on understanding and creativity can be identified.

Effects Of Incremental Amounts Of Fish Oil On Trans Fatty Acids And Butyrivibrio Bacteria In Continuous Culture Fermenters., A A Abughazaleh, A Ishlak
Peer-reviewed Articles
Previous studies have shown that adding fish oil (FO) to ruminant animal diets increased vaccenic acid (VA; t11 C18:1) accumulation in the rumen. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary FO amounts on selected strains of rumen bacteria involved in biohydrogenation. A single-flow continuous culture system consisting of four fermenters was used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 9 days consecutive periods. Treatment diets were as follows: (i) control diet (53:47 forage to concentrate; CON), (ii) control plus FO at 0.5% (DM basis; FOL), (iii) control plus FO at 2% …

The histologic features of aging muscle suggest that denervation contributes to atrophy, that immobility accelerates the process, and that routine exercise may protect against loss of motor units and muscle tissue. Here, we compared muscle biopsies from sedentary and physically active seniors and found that seniors with a long history of high-level recreational activity up to the time of muscle biopsy had 1) lower loss of muscle strength versus young men (32% loss in physically active vs 51% loss in sedentary seniors); 2) fewer small angulated (denervated) myofibers; 3) a higher percentage of fiber-type groups (reinnervated muscle fibers) that were …

Skeletal muscle (SKM) atrophy is a potentially debilitating condition induced by muscle disuse, denervation, many disease states, and aging. The ubiquitin proteasome pathway (UPP) contributes greatly to the protein loss suffered in muscle atrophy. The MERG1a K(+) channel is known to induce UPP activity and atrophy in SKM. It has been further demonstrated that the mouse ether-a-gogo-related gene (Merg)1a channel modulates expression of MURF1, an E3 ligase component of the UPP, while it does not affect expression of the UPP E3 ligase Mafbx/ATROGIN1. Because the UBR2 E3 ligase is known to participate in SKM atrophy, we have investigated the effect …

A Case Study Of Exhibit Design And Installation Processes In An Illinois State-Funded University Museum, Nina M. Fuscaldo
Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to assess the process for exhibition design and installation in a case study of an Illinois state-funded University Museum. The case study methodology focused on the administration of a self-administered interview questionnaire to professional staff using a review of contemporary research and current practices of select US museums within the region to provide a basis for recommendations and improvements centered around questionnaire results. This study views different aspects of the exhibit design and installation processes at this museum, including internal communication, museum hierarchy, budgetary restrictions, and volunteers. The analysis shows that the state-funded University …

Collaborative Community Hydrology Research In Northern New Mexico, Steven J. Guldan, Alexander G. Fernald, Carlos G. Ochoa, Vincent C. Tidwell
Collaborative Community Hydrology Research In Northern New Mexico, Steven J. Guldan, Alexander G. Fernald, Carlos G. Ochoa, Vincent C. Tidwell
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
In New Mexico, increasing demand for water, combined with limited supplies and periodic drought, is placing additional stress on traditional acequia communities. Research on the hydrology of acequia agriculture in northern New Mexico has been carried out in three communities and their associated watersheds and irrigated valleys. Critical to the effort has been the participation of the acequias and individual farmers, ranchers, and other community member stakeholders. Participation in hydrology research included assistance in altering flows in acequias, and access to private property and wells, critical to obtain ground and surface water measurements. Further research that integrated hydrologic data with …

Courses in modeling often employ techniques based on mathematical or other computer-based quantitative models. In this article the authors update a range of social science qualitative and visualization methodologies presented to graduate students at an interdisciplinary modeling course on water issues related to climate change. In part the modeling course featured the coupling of natural and human system dynamics in the context of acequias, gravity flow irrigation systems in New Mexico that depend on winter snowpack for water supply in the form of spring run-off. While student teams were able to employ STELLA and other models, they were free to …

Hydrologic Connectivity Of Head Waters And Floodplains In A Semi-Arid Watershed, Carlos G. Ochoa, Steven J. Guldan, Andres F. Cibils, Stephanie C. Lopez, Kenneth G. Boykin, Vincent C. Tidwell, Alexander G. Fernald
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Hydrologic connectivity can be important when assessing the role of water availability and distribution in sustaining different natural processes and human activities in a given landscape. We present a study that served as one of five case studies for an interdisciplinary modeling course. The main objectives of the study presented are: 1) to characterize the hydrologic connectivity between the uplands and the irrigated valley and; 2) to set the foundations for understanding the connections between hydrology and complementary disciplines of ecology, rangeland management, and system dynamics modeling in a semiarid watershed in the southwestern United States. Study results show a …

Lessons Learned From An Inter-Institutional Graduate Course On Interdisciplinary Modeling For Water-Related Issues And Changing Climate, Laurel Saito, Timothy E. Link, Alexander Fernald, Lisa Kohne
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Computer modeling is a useful tool for integrating approaches from different disciplines to address complex water and climate issues, but because academic training is typically disciplinary, many scientists and practitioners are not aware of modeling techniques in other disciplines or ways that different models can be integrated to address complex questions. Since 2005, we have conducted a course on interdisciplinary modeling that provides lectures and laboratory exercises from different disciplines as well as topics related to interdisciplinary modeling such as issues of scale and uncertainty. Students work in interdisciplinary teams to integrate modeling approaches from different disciplines to address issues …
Vadose Zone Processes: A Compendium For Teaching Interdisciplinary Modeling, Robert Heinse, Timothy E. Link
Vadose Zone Processes: A Compendium For Teaching Interdisciplinary Modeling, Robert Heinse, Timothy E. Link
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
We describe one approach of teaching vadose zone (VZ) processes to non-vadose zone (NVZ) scholars interested in the water and climate change nexus. Our objective is to introduce key models and input parameters, briefly explain the mechanics of solving the problem using the Richards equation approach, and to point out alternative and scale-dependent approaches and solutions. Our goal is to provide enough information such that students gain some familiarity with key terms, have a rudimentary mechanistic understanding, and most importantly, know where to look for more information. We recognize that in some situations a significant amount of complexity is embedded …

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the mechanism by which the MERG1a K+ channel increases ubiquitin proteasome proteolysis (UPP).
METHODS: Hindlimb suspension and electro-transfer of Merg1a cDNA into mouse gastrocnemius muscles induced atrophy.
RESULTS: Atrophic gastrocnemius muscles of hindlimb-suspended mice express Merg1a, Murf1, and Mafbx genes. Electrotransfer of Merg1a significantly decreases muscle fiber size (12.6%) and increases UPP E3 ligase Murf1 mRNA (2.1-fold) and protein (23.7%), but does not affect Mafbx E3 ligase expression. Neither Merg1a-induced decreased fiber size nor Merg1a-induced increased Murf1 expression is curtailed significantly by coexpression of inactive HR-Foxo3a, a gene encoding a transcription factor known to induce Mafbx expression. …

The Illinois Supreme Court decision in People v. Hollins upheld the conviction of a defendant under the Illinois child pornography statute for taking photographs of himself and his seventeen-year-old girlfriend having sexual relations, while another Illinois statute legalizes consensual sex with any person seventeen or older. This is due to the fact that Illinois considers child pornography as its own distinct historical category of unprotected speech, as recognized by the Supreme Court in United States v. Ferber. However, after the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Stevens, child pornography is arguably not its own distinct historical category, …
