Texas High Plains Initiative For Strategic And Innovative Irrigation Management And Conservation, Justin Weinheimer, Phillip Johnson, Donna Mitchell, Jeff Johnson, Rick Kellison

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The strategic management of irrigation applications to improve water-use efficiency and meet economic objectives has been identified as a key factor in the conservation of water resources in the Texas High Plains region. Two field level demonstration projects have been ongoing in the Texas High Plains to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of irrigation water conservation methods. Since 2010, the North Plains Groundwater Conservation District has evaluated corn production using 12 acre-inches or less of applied irrigation water with a goal to produce 200 bushels per acre. In the South Plains, the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation (TAWC) has worked directly …

Acequias And The Effects Of Climate Change, Albert Rango, Alexander Fernald, Caitriana Steele, Brian Hurd, Carlos Ochoa Feb 2014

Acequias And The Effects Of Climate Change, Albert Rango, Alexander Fernald, Caitriana Steele, Brian Hurd, Carlos Ochoa

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Traditional forms of acequia irrigation can be combined with ground based and remote sensing snow measurements and snowmelt runoff modeling to better estimate runoff volumes now and in the future under conditions of climate change. The experience gained over 400 years of irrigating small fields strongly binds communities and strengthens the resolve of acequia associations to contest challenges presented by climate change. Increased density of snow measurements in high elevations of the Rio Grande along with input of real-time data to snowmelt models has led to an improved potential for acequia decision making under the increased temperatures projected for the …

Climate Change Mitigation Policies: Implications For Agriculture And Water Resources, George B. Frisvold, Kazim Konyar Feb 2014

Climate Change Mitigation Policies: Implications For Agriculture And Water Resources, George B. Frisvold, Kazim Konyar

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This study examines how the proposed American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454) would affect U.S. agriculture with special reference to water resources. The bill's cap and trade provisions for greenhouse gases would significantly raise fertilizer, irrigation pumping, and other energy-related costs. By 2030, it would reduce U.S. irrigation water use by >11 percent and fertilizer use by >18 percent with positive implications for water conservation and quality. Carbon offset provisions create financial incentives for farmers to sequester carbon by planting trees on cropland, reducing agricultural production and raising prices. Because sequestration potential differs by region, most of the …

Nutrient Management And The Chesapeake Bay, Douglas Beegle Feb 2014

Nutrient Management And The Chesapeake Bay, Douglas Beegle

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States with a very large and diverse watershed. The health of the Bay related to pollution from nutrients and sediment has been in decline for many years. Agriculture in the watershed is one of the major contributors of nutrient and sediment pollution to the Chesapeake. The cause of the nutrient pollution from agriculture has usually been thought to have been the result of mismanagement of nutrients on farms. Consequently, the approaches to solving the problem have focused almost exclusively on changing farm management. As a result, significant progress has been …

Epizootic And Zoonotic Helminths Of The Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) In Illinois And A Comparison Of Its Helminth Component Communities Across The American Midwest, Shelby J Hiestand, Clayton K Nielsen, F Agustin Jimenez-Ruiz Feb 2014

Epizootic And Zoonotic Helminths Of The Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) In Illinois And A Comparison Of Its Helminth Component Communities Across The American Midwest, Shelby J Hiestand, Clayton K Nielsen, F Agustin Jimenez-Ruiz

Publications

A total of 6257 helminths of 19 taxa were recovered from the digestive tract and lungs of 67 bobcats in Illinois. Infections caused by Alaria mustelae, Diphyllobothrium latum, and Macracanthorhynchus ingens are reported for the first time in bobcats. From all the taxa recovered, only three species occurred in high prevalence and caused intense infections: Taenia rileyi, Alaria marcianae, and Toxocara cati, with prevalence and mean intensity of 70% and 6; 42% and 193, and 25% and 14 individuals, respectively. Prevalence lower than 15% of 14 helminth species suggests bobcats are not continuously exposed to infective stages of a single …

Improved seed composition in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] for protein and oil quality is one of the major goals of soybean breeders. A group of genes that act as quantitative traits with their effects can alter protein, oil, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids percentage in soybean seeds. The objective of this study was to identify Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) controlling protein, oil, and fatty acids content in a set of F5:8 RILs de-rived from a cross between lines, ‘MD 96-5722’ and ‘Spencer’ using 5376 Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers from the Illumina Infinium SoySNP6K BeadChip array. QTL …

The Uptake Of Soluble And Particulate Antigens By Epithelial Cells In The Mouse Small Intestine, Savannah E Howe, Duane J Lickteig, Kyle N Plunkett, Jan S Ryerse, Vjollca Konjufca Jan 2014

The Uptake Of Soluble And Particulate Antigens By Epithelial Cells In The Mouse Small Intestine, Savannah E Howe, Duane J Lickteig, Kyle N Plunkett, Jan S Ryerse, Vjollca Konjufca

Publications

Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) overlying the villi play a prominent role in absorption of digested nutrients and establish a barrier that separates the internal milieu from potentially harmful microbial antigens. Several mechanisms by which antigens of dietary and microbial origin enter the body have been identified; however whether IECs play a role in antigen uptake is not known. Using in vivo imaging of the mouse small intestine, we investigated whether epithelial cells (enterocytes) play an active role in the uptake (sampling) of lumen antigens. We found that small molecular weight antigens such as chicken ovalbumin, dextran, and bacterial LPS enter …

Demographic studies of imperiled populations can aid managers in planning conservation actions. However, applicability of findings for a single population across a species’ range is sometimes questionable. We conducted long-term studies (8 and 9 years, respectively) of 2 populations of the lizard Phrynosoma cornutum separated by 1000 km within the historical distribution of the species. The sites were a 15-ha urban wildlife reserve on Tinker Air Force Base (TAFB) in central Oklahoma and a 6000-ha wildland site in southern Texas, the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area (CWMA). We predicted a trade-off between the effect of adult survival and fecundity on population …

Estimating Abundance Of Adult Trachemys Scripta With Camera Traps: Accuracy, Precision And Probabilities Of Capture For A Closed Population, Robert D. Bluett, Eric M. Schauber

Publications

Low and variable rates of capture are common problems when estimating abundance of freshwater turtles with capture-mark-recapture (CMR). We speculated camera traps would allow us to obtain reliable estimates of abundance by re-sighting marked Trachemys scripta elegans (Sliders) as they basked on man-made rafts during a 20-day surveillance period. We evaluated the method by releasing Sliders in a fenced enclosure to compare estimates from CMR to true abundance. We also evaluated probabilities of detection and retention of marks. Permanence of marks applied with marine epoxy satisfied assumptions for CMR. Camera traps detected 23 of 25 Sliders. Our ability to discern …

Habitat Associations Of Fish Assemblages In The Cache River, Illinois, Kristen L. Bouska, Gregory Whitledge Jan 2014

Habitat Associations Of Fish Assemblages In The Cache River, Illinois, Kristen L. Bouska, Gregory Whitledge

Publications

Fish and habitat were sampled by state agencies at 48 stations throughout the Cache River watershed, Illinois between 1992 and 2009. Two distinct fish assemblages were identified, one primarily found in the lower mainstem Cache River and a second found throughout tributaries and the upper mainstem Cache River. Using a canonical correspondence analysis, the distribution of fish species was largely explained by substrate, land use, drainage area and local habitat features. Creek chub, central stoneroller, fringed darter and fantail darter are species found to be positively associated with gravel substrate and forest. In contrast, black buffalo, gizzard shad, smallmouth buffalo, …

In a sample of individuals with childhood focal epilepsy, children/adolescents with left hemisphere foci outperformed those with right foci on both measures of nonverbal learning. Participants with left foci performed worse than controls on paired associate delayed recall and semantic memory, and they had greater laterality effects in IQ. Participants with right foci performed worse than controls on delayed facial recognition. Both groups displayed reduced focused attention and poor passage retention over time. Although participants with bilateral foci displayed poor learning and lower IQ than controls, they did not have worse impairment than those with a unilateral focus.

The robust jaws and large, thick-enameled molars of the Plio–Pleistocene hominins Australopithecus and Paranthropus have long been interpreted as adaptations for hard-object feeding. Recent studies of dental microwear indicate that only Paranthropus robustus regularly ate hard items, suggesting that the dentognathic anatomy of other australopiths reflects rare, seasonal exploitation of hard fallback foods. Here, we show that hard-object feeding cannot explain the extreme morphology of Paranthropus boisei. Rather, analysis of long-term dietary plasticity in an animal model suggests year-round reliance on tough foods requiring prolonged postcanine processing in P. boisei. Increased consumption of such items may have marked …

Seabird Nutrient Subsidies Benefit Non-Nitrogen Fixing Trees And Alter Species Composition In South American Coastal Dry Forests, Gilles Havik, Alessandro Catenazzi, Milena Holmgren Jan 2014

Seabird Nutrient Subsidies Benefit Non-Nitrogen Fixing Trees And Alter Species Composition In South American Coastal Dry Forests, Gilles Havik, Alessandro Catenazzi, Milena Holmgren

Publications

Marine-derived nutrients can increase primary productivity and change species composition of terrestrial plant communities in coastal and riverine ecosystems. We hypothesized that sea nutrient subsidies have a positive effect on nitrogen assimilation and seedling survival of non-nitrogen fixing species, increasing the relative abundance of non-nitrogen fixing species close to seashore. Moreover, we proposed that herbivores can alter the effects of nutrient supplementation by preferentially feeding on high nutrient plants. We studied the effects of nutrient fertilization by seabird guano on tree recruitment and how these effects can be modulated by herbivorous lizards in the coastal dry forests of northwestern Peru. …

In Vitro Culture Of Bovine Preantral Follicles: A Review, Valdevane R Araújo, Melba O Gastal, José R Figueiredo, Eduardo L Gastal

Peer-reviewed Articles

Preantral follicles are the majority of the ovarian follicle population and their use as a source of homogeneous oocytes for bovine reproductive biotechnologies could result in a substantial advance in this field. However, while in other species embryos and offspring have been produced, in bovine species the results have been limited to the follicular activation of small (primordial) preantral follicles and formation of early antral follicles from large (secondary) preantral follicles after in vitro culture. Therefore, this review will highlight the basic aspects of bovine folliculogenesis by focusing on preantral follicles, the methods of harvesting preantral follicles, the main results …

The Forkhead Transcription Factor, Foxp3: A Critical Role In Male Fertility In Mice., Jake S Jasurda, Deborah O Jung, Erin D Froeter, David B Schwartz, Torin D Hopkins, Corrie L Farris, Stacey Mcgee, Prema Narayan, Buffy S Ellsworth

Articles

Fertility is dependent on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Each component of this axis is essential for normal reproductive function. Mice with a mutation in the forkhead transcription factor gene, Foxp3, exhibit autoimmunity and infertility. We have previously shown that Foxp3 mutant mice have significantly reduced expression of pituitary gonadotropins. To address the role of Foxp3 in gonadal function, we examined the gonadal phenotype of these mice. Foxp3 mutant mice have significantly reduced seminal vesicle and testis weights compared with Foxp3(+/Y) littermates. Spermatogenesis in Foxp3 mutant males is arrested prior to spermatid elongation. Activation of luteinizing hormone signaling in Foxp3 mutant mice …
