Central Progesterone Involvement In Estrogen-Induced Prolactin And Luteinizing Hormone Secretion Surges In Female Rats, Lauren L. Hilmes May 2014

Central Progesterone Involvement In Estrogen-Induced Prolactin And Luteinizing Hormone Secretion Surges In Female Rats, Lauren L. Hilmes

Honors Theses

In a cycling female rat, ovarian follicles produce steroid hormones under the influence of gonadotropin release from the pituitary gland. As the cycle of steroid synthesis and secretion increases, a spike in circulating estradiol drives an estrogen-positive feedback, which triggers luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin surges from the pituitary. As they circulate in the bloodstream, these hormones contribute to follicular steroidogenesis and luteolysis during the estrous cycle. Recent studies have supported the theory that estradiol circulating from ovarian origin also regulates the synthesis of neuroprogesterone in the hypothalamus, which is involved in the initiation of the LH surge. In order …

Data were collected on the fidelity of UDL implementation, student academic engagement during lesson plan implementation, and teacher acceptability …

Effects Of Speaker's Accent In A Multimedia Tutorial On Non-Native Students' Learning And Attitudes, Lam Vien Cao Ngoc May 2014

Effects Of Speaker's Accent In A Multimedia Tutorial On Non-Native Students' Learning And Attitudes, Lam Vien Cao Ngoc

Dissertations

Research in the field of multimedia has yielded principles for the design of effective multimedia instructional messages including Mayer's principles regarding voice. According to the voice principle, students learn more deeply when the narration in a multimedia lesson is spoken by a native voice rather than a non-native voice. The generalizability of the voice principle has been demonstrated when applied to multimedia users who are native speakers of the language used in narration. However, three out of four English users are non-native speakers of English, and the vast majority of verbal exchanges in English do not involve any native speakers …

Evaluation Of Non-Functionalized Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Composites For Bone Tissue Engineering, Ashim Gupta May 2014

Evaluation Of Non-Functionalized Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Composites For Bone Tissue Engineering, Ashim Gupta

Dissertations

Introduction: Bone defects and non-unions caused by trauma, tumor resection, pathological degeneration, or congenital deformity pose a great challenge in the field of orthopedics. Traditionally, these defects have been repaired by using autografts and allografts. Autografts have set the gold standard for clinical bone repair because of their osteoconductivity, osteoinductivity and osteogenicity. Nevertheless, the application of autografts is limited because of donor availability and donor site morbidity. Allografts have the advantage that the tissues are readily available and can be easily applied, especially when large segments of bone are to be reconstructed. However, their use is also limited by the …

Blood, Mud, And Money: Place And Public Land Conflicts In The Shawnee Hills, Karen Wolf

Dissertations

This dissertation examines conflicts involving the use of public land for both extractive resources and recreational purposes in Southern Illinois from an anthropological perspective. These conflicts are examined in terms of place, western ideas of nature and culture, and the debate concerning conservation versus preservation. The beginning point for this work was the question of whether or not place building influences conflicts over public land. The conflicts that this work encompasses are logging, hunting, use of off-road vehicles, equestrian, and hydraulic fracturing. My goal was to look at different recreational conflicts of Southern Illinois and determine how issues of place, …

Plant Responses To Increased Experimental Nitrogen Deposition In A Boreal Peatland, Meaghan Petix May 2014

Plant Responses To Increased Experimental Nitrogen Deposition In A Boreal Peatland, Meaghan Petix

Theses

Increased nitrogen (N) deposition onto boreal peatlands and forests is anticipated with further expansion of Alberta's oil sands industry and consequently, an increase in sources of nitrogen oxide emissions. Increased N deposition has the potential to affect peatland flora and alter N cycling patterns in peatlands, therefore it is imperative to investigate at what level of excess N deposition these effects take place. This thesis discusses results from the first two years of a five year N fertilization study being conducted at a peatland complex near the hamlet of Mariana Lake in northeastern Alberta, Canada aimed at quantifying the N …

Investigating Cell Phone Radiation Exposure: Actions Of The Us Government, Tasa Proctor

Research Papers

Almost every man, woman, and child in America has used a cell phone at some point in time. Cell phones make staying connected more than just a phrase. They make almost all forms of communication possible. However, the grisly reality about cell phones is, they emit radiation. The source of the radiation is the phones’ antenna. Although thought to be harmless to humans, the type of radiation they emit is under investigation for causing adverse effects on human health. In 2001, peer–reviewed research findings on cell phone radiation brought to the attention of the World Health Organization caused the organization …

Publications

Concerns about nanotechnology have prompted studies on how the release of these engineered nanoparticles impact our environment. Herein, the impact of 20 nm silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the life history traits of Arabidopsis thaliana was studied in both above- and below-ground parts, at macroscopic and microscopic scales. Both gross phenotypes (in contrast to microscopic phenotypes) and routes of transport and accumulation were investigated from roots to shoots. Wild type Arabidopsis growing in soil, regularly irrigated with 75 μg/L of AgNPs, did not show any obvious morphological change. However, their vegetative development was prolonged by two to three days and their …
