Tomatoes, L.C. Corbett
Tomatoes, L.C. Corbett
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
That tomatoes cannot be successfully grown and ripened in the open air in South Dakota, is an idea very generally met with throughout the state. But judging from the results of our experiments, during the season of '93, then, must have been some fault in the methods of culture pursued by those failing to ripen a paying crop. There are conditions to be overcome in nearly all climates and the one here is the short season of plant growth. The past summer was perhaps one of average length, yet the period, as shown below between frosts was too short by …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
During the past month, we have received many inquiries for information regarding the causes and treatment of the above named diseases. Many of these communications have been answered direct, but, in order to meet all past and future inquiries, regarding these diseases, we have decided to issue the following information for the benefit of those who are asking- for the same. There is certainly no state in the Union, where contagious and infectious diseases have done so little damage, as in South Dakota, and if stockmen and flock masters throughout the state, would take more interest in the work of …

Fungous Diseases, Insect Pests, Fungicides And Insecticides, T.A. Williams, L.C. Corbett
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
This attacks both leaves and fruits and often also the young twigs. Though the fungus grows on both sides of the leaf it is most conspicuous on the upper surface. It appears as a network of fine greenish brown or blackish filaments and causes the leaves to become discolored, curl up and fall off. On the fruit it produces irregular, dark greenish brown, velvety blotches and while not causing any great amount of decay, hinders growth and deforms the fruit. In very bad cases young fruit shrinks up and falls off.

The Sugar Beet, J.H. Shepard
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Of the six varieties of mother beets planted from seed, three varieties were lost after the seed had fully matured. These beets were planted on the station farm and were destroyed by sheep. The remaining three varieties were planted in my own private garden and the seed obtained were sown last spring. The names of these varieties are Dieppe's Klein Wanzlebener, Pajaro Valley, and Simon Legrand's White Improved. As already reported in Bulletin No. 27 of this Station the three mother beets selected of the variety Klein Wanzlebener gave respectively 15. 70, 17.40, and 15.61 percent sugar in the beet …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
During the past two years many inquiries have been received regarding the possible injurious nature of various plants. In many cases such poisonous plants as "rattlebox," and the “loco weeds" have been sent, while in many others, perfectly harmless plants have been sent to us with assurances of their injurious nature. With a view to calling attention to a few plants that are quite certainly injurious the present bulletin has been issued. It will serve as a preliminary step towards a full investigation of all PLANTS INJURIOUS to STOCK found in our state. It is hoped that stockmen and farmers …

Forestry, J.C. Whitten
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
During the season of 1892 no new plantings have been added to the forest plats. The season has, as a whole, been favorable to tree growth, though so wet as to prevent the successful extermination of weeds. During the early part of the growing season, copious rains greatly hindered work with the cultivator, and also kept the, ground so cold that weed growth did not begin in earnest until the latter part of June. About this time the soil became dry enough to be worked to better advantage, and a vigorous use of the cultivator was continued until July 7th, …

The New Insectary, I.H. Orcutt, J.M. Aldrich
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Recognizing the necessity of facilities for rearing insects in a situation where alt" external conditions could be controlled, as well as of a suitable place for keeping the collections and apparatus of the department the board of trustees last year authorized the construction of a building for the entomological department. This was occupied about June 25. It is a structure 16x32 feet in size, with wing 12 feet square. In the main part is the general office and work room, 16 feet square, a well finished room, provided with desk, tables, balances, shelves for collections, etc. Here are kept a …

Forestry And Fungi, C.A. Keffer, T.A. Williams
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The season of 1891 has been favorable for forest tree growth at the Experiment Station. The oldest planted plats begin to assume something of the nature of trees, and to illustrate characteristics of growth in the different species that seem to indicate their ultimate utility in this region. Observations have been made during the year upon the rate of growth of the different species, more especially with a view to determining what trees will quickest form leaf canopy and thus require least cultivation. This is a matter of supreme importance to the farmer tree planter unlike the nurseryman, or the …
Glanders, C.A. Cary
Glanders, C.A. Cary
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Glanders is a specific, contagious disease, most frequently found in the equinine species; but may be may be transmitted (by inoculation or by ingestion of glanderous material) to man, sheep goats, dog, cats and some of the rodents. The susceptibility of the hog is questionable, but it is certain that horned cattle and domestic fowls are proof against glanders.

The Cut-Worm, I.H. Orcutt, J.M. Aldrich
The Cut-Worm, I.H. Orcutt, J.M. Aldrich
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The work of the department for the last year has been of two kinds. First, the attempt to keep in check the injurious insects of the farm, garden, and tree plantations. Second, such experiments and original investigations as could be made. The progress of events showed early in the season that cut-worms were among our worst enemies, and later reports as given further on, show them to be quite generally distributed through the State. They have, therefore, received as much attention as circumstances would allow. Notes more or less extended were made on various other pests in their season but …
Small Grain, L. Foster
Small Grain, L. Foster
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
In order to test the comparative merit, of the two principal methods of putting in the small grain crop, and to determine that quantity of seed that should be sown per acre for the most profitable production, the beginning of a series of experiment made the past season. The results must not be taken as conclusive but rather as only suggestive under like conditions. The implements used were the Havana Press Drill and the Owatonna Broadcast Seeder.
The Sugar Beet, L. Foster, J.H. Shepard
The Sugar Beet, L. Foster, J.H. Shepard
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The Station has completed its second season's test of the sugar beet, and the result gives us still better evidence of its crop value to South Dakota both for stock feeding and sugar making. While the crop was not as great either in percent of sugar or yield of roots per acre as may reasonably be expected in more favorable seasons, or by following more strictly the French and German methods of fertilizing and cultivating, it was still sufficiently large to insure it a profitable crop even under the opposing influences of the past season.

Forestry, C.A. Keffer
Forestry, C.A. Keffer
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The work of experimentation in forestry has been pursued during the past season under the same unfavorable conditions that have troubled the farmers over the greater portion of the state. Insects have attacked our trees, and the fall was dry, and the spring was dry and cold. In order to give the most accurate basis possible from which the judge the results of the work, a few items from the meteorological record are inserted.
