Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The primary object of this bulletin is to scatter broadcast over the territory important information, with which very few are at present familiar. This seems to be perfectly in accord with the language of the act establishing this experiment station,-"to aid in diffusing useful and practical information." No effort has been made at a systematic arrangement of the insects referred to. For the benefit of those who may wish to make a special study of any insect treated of, its scientific name is given in parenthesis. Popular names of insects are so very loosely applied, that it is often impossible …
The Sugar Beet, J.H. Shepard
The Sugar Beet, J.H. Shepard
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
During the preceding year seven varieties of sugar beets have been cultivated on the college farm under the supervision of Professor Foster who has furnished the data concerning the preparation of the soil and the care of the crop. In the spring the ground was manured with well-rotted barn-yard manure at the rate of 100 cubic yards per acre. In May the ground was plowed 9 inches deep without subsoiling. Before the beets were sown the land was thoroughly pulverized by means of the harrow and after sowing the ground was rolled. The beets were not planted in ridges but …
Forestry, C.A. Keffer
Forestry, C.A. Keffer
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Scarcely more than a beginning was been made in forestry operations at this station, but the work is of such importance, and the general interest in all subjects connected with tree growing is so great, that it would seem best to describe the work in detail. In the nature of the case, experiments in practical forestry require for their completion a series of years, so that any observations made before their completion must be suggestive, rather than conclusive. And it is a wise precaution on the part of the reader to note carefully the recorded conditions before coming to a …
Small Grain, L. Foster
Small Grain, L. Foster
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The land upon which the grain plats were located is the usual sandy loam of the farm with a subsoil of clay and it has a slight westward slope. This portion of the farm came in to our possession only the previous fall, but it had been under cultivation for nine years, having produced four crops of wheat, three of oats and two .of corn. Only a small portion of the piece had ever been manured and that but sparingly. The ground was plowed in October to a depth of seven inches and thoroughly pulverized in the spring just before …

The Germination Of Frosted Grain, C.A. Keffer
The Germination Of Frosted Grain, C.A. Keffer
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
A number of letters have been received requesting information on the value of frosted and stack burned grain for seed. There is submitted here with a tabulated statement of the results of tests of eighteen samples of grain, including two samples of barley, one of oats, and fifteen of wheat. Different methods for determining the percentage of germination were employed. Fifty seeds of each sample were drilled in black soil, in shallow boxes, which were then placed in the propagating house, where they would have a gentle bottom heat. The soil used was taken from a field that had never …

The Drinking Waters Of Dakota, J.H. Shepard, L. Mclouth
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
This Bulletin is issued preparatory to a thorough investigation of the characteristics of the drinking waters of Dakota. A few analyses are given, together with other information that will place this subject before the citizens of Dakota in a manner likely to bring to the Station trustworthy samples of water accompanied by correct and explicit data. Samples of drinking water (good as well as bad) are needed for the completion of this work and all such will receive prompt attention. A few samples from widely separated localities are desired rather than many samples from the same locality. The analyses will …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
This Bulletin is offered to the farmers and gardeners of the Territory with the hope that they may find it valuable at least in suggestions. Accompanying this bulletin are meteorological tables that may be of value as throwing light upon the facts herein noted. Any farmer in the territory who desires the bulletins of the …
