Ferns And Flowering Plants Of South Dakota, D.A. Saunders
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The results embodied in the accompanying catalogue are based on specimens in the College herberium, and on notes taken in the field by Professor T. A. Williams and the writer. The nomenclature followed is the modification of the Paris Code adopted by the Botanical Club of the American Association for the Advancement of Science at Rochester in 1892 and amended at the Madison, Wis., meeting in 1893. The only synonyms given are such as would be a help to one accustomed to using Gray's Manual. In preparing this catalogue, Dr. P. A. Rydberg's Flora of the Black Hills has been …
Pig Feeding In South Dakota, E.A. Burnett
Pig Feeding In South Dakota, E.A. Burnett
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The object of this experiment was to obtain some more practical data concerning the feeding value of some of our common food stuffs, and to gather data regarding the cost of production of pork, produced under favorable conditions upon our common grains. It was thought that an accurate statement of the cost of producing pork upon our cheap grains would encourage our farmers to raise larger numbers of hogs and to feed more of our cheap grains, such as barley and corn, instead of selling them at prices which are little, if any, above the cost of production. From this …
Sugar Beets In South Dakota, J.H. Shepard, W.H. Knox
Sugar Beets In South Dakota, J.H. Shepard, W.H. Knox
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
At the close of the work for 1897 it became evident that no further progress could be made in determining the saccharine strength of beets grown in this state. The results were all that could be desired in every way. It was suggested, however, by factory builders and intending investors that the securing of commercial data was necessary. It was suggested that our 'next need was to ascertain the cost per acre of producing the beets, and also to determine the tonnage from large plats where the beets were all harvested and weighed, in order that commercial conditions might be …

Forage And Garden Crops In The James River Valley, R.C. Chilcott, R.S. Roe
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The experiments in the James River Valley during 1898 are a continuation of those conducted in 1896 and 1897, the results of which are recorded in Bulletins 52 and 59. As in former years, these experiments have been conducted in the Hunter-Salzer Farm at Mellette and the seeds have mostly been furnished by the John A. Salzer Seed Co., of Lacrosse, Wis. All of the larger permanent grass-plants that were established in 1896 and which have survived two winters and three summers have been preserved. The Alfalfa and Clovers have also been continued. The results obtained with Brome grass, Alfalfa, …
Four Injurious Insects, D.A. Saunders
Four Injurious Insects, D.A. Saunders
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
During the past season a large number of reports and inquiries came to the Experiment Station in reference to insect ravages. As much time as could be spared was spent in visiting the infected regions and giving such help and advice as was possible. The larger part of the month of June was spent in visiting regions where the Rocky Mountain Locusts had appeared and in helping the farmers in constructing the "hopper dozers." During the month of August the region infested with the Green Plant Bug was visited and as much information as possible was gathered in reference to …

Feeding Sheep In South Dakota, E.C. Chilcott, E.A. Burnett
Feeding Sheep In South Dakota, E.C. Chilcott, E.A. Burnett
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The natural importance of the sheep industry to South Dakota is well established by the facts that her rich native grasses furnish abundant pastures and that her climatic conditions favor the grazing industry in all parts of the State. These natural advantages have long been recognized and have been utilized to a greater or less extent in all parts of the State for a number of years past. Another great natural advantage, of possibly even greater importance than those above mentioned, is her geographical location within the natural zone of cheap food supply. She embraces within her borders some of …

Forage Plants For South Dakota : Silos And Silage, E.C. Chilcott
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The natural advantages of the state of South Dakota as a stock country have long been recognized. Our range beef end mutton is regarded as second to none in its class. Our wool has earned an enviable reputation in all of the wool centers of America. And last in order of development, but by no means least in importance, our dairy products have established a. name for themselves among the very best on this continent. All of these achievements have been won almost entirely without the a.id of cultivated grains and grasses. Our native prairie grasses have, in nearly all …

A Comparative Study Of Degenerative Tissue, Homer Davis
A Comparative Study Of Degenerative Tissue, Homer Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nutrition is the earliest and most constant of vital operations. So prominent is the nutritive apparatus of an animal that the animal has been likened to a moving sac, organized to convert foreign matter into its own likeness, to which the complex organs of animal life are but auxiliaries. In growth more material is used by the body-protoplasm that is expelled. Nutrition includes excretion i.e. the removal of spent material which is usually poisonous and which if allowed to remain in the body organism would impair nutrition in its fullest sense. The objects of nutrition are growth, repair, and propogation. …

The Trend Towards Socialism In Recent Law-Making, James Arthur Brown
The Trend Towards Socialism In Recent Law-Making, James Arthur Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: It is an undeniable fact that civilized nations are drifting towards socialism. Whether we reach the goal of ideal and theoretic socialists at last, or stop short of socialism in its modern accepted meaning it is not the purpose of this work to investigate. Socialism is of recent origin. It was started less than seventy years ago in France. The progress that it has made is worthy of some attention. It has spread to all civilized nations and has won many earnest supporters in England, France Germany and the United States. A great deal of confusion results from the …

Forestry, J.M. Trueman
Forestry, J.M. Trueman
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Since publishing Forestry Bulletin No. 32 a very severe test of the hardiness of the several species in the forest plat at this station has been passed through. 1893 was perhaps an average season with something less than the usual amount of rainfall, but the season of 1894 was almost unprecedented for the extreme duration of the dry period. It began early and continued until after the plants had completed their season's growth. For some species under such trying conditions the provisions for winter appear to have been insufficient, as is evidenced by the great falling off in number in …

Native Trees And Shrubs Of South Dakota, T.A. Williams
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
In the course of our study of the flora of South Dakota during the past two years, a large amount of material relating to the woody plants has been gathered together. A portion of this is included in this bulletin. This report is published with .a two-fold object in view. It is hoped that it· will stimulate a closer study of our trees and shrubs and their distribution throughout the state, and also serve to some extent as a guide in the selection of plants for planting. A knowledge of the trees and shrubs growing naturally in a given region …
Squashes, L.C. Corbett
Squashes, L.C. Corbett
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
From those who have attempted growing either pumpkins or squashes, in the more newly settled portions of our State, there comes almost universal complaint; that the vines while making a satisfactory growth, do not set fruit. There is an abundant production of flowers but an almost complete failure of fruit. This question was so constantly met with, that during the past two seasons a series of observations were made upon plants of this class with a view of determining, if possible, the cause of the failure as well as a more or less complete remedy for it. A very little …

The Artesian Waters Of South Dakota, J.H. Shepard
The Artesian Waters Of South Dakota, J.H. Shepard
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The artesian waters of South Dakota are used for three distinct purposes. In the first place they are used by cities as the source of water supply. When thus used they are employed for domestic use, for sprinkling lawns and gardens and for fire protection. Closely, akin to these are the township or neighborhood wells where the water is used conjointly by communities for watering stock and for domestic use. In the second place these waters are used for irrigating purposes mainly and for domestic use incidentally. In such cases the well may be owned by an individual or it …
Native And Introduced Forage Plants, T.A. Williams, J.H. Shepard
Native And Introduced Forage Plants, T.A. Williams, J.H. Shepard
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The true grasses are one of the most valuable families of plants. To them belong the small grains (oats, wheat, barley, etc.,), corn, the various sorts of cane, the great bamboo of Asia, and a host of other plants of more or Jess importance to man or beast. In the great prairie regions of the United States the grasses form by far the greater part of the natural vegetation and constitute one of the most valuable of the natural resources as well. In our own state of South Dakota stock-raising- has been one of the leading industries ever since its …

Milk Tests And Comparison Tables, A.H. Wheaton
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The establishment of a Dairy School in connection with the South Dakota Agricultural College and Experiment Station was authorized by the State Legislature of 1891. The sum of two thousand dollars was appropriated for the erection of suitable buildings and these were built and furnished with all necessary modern appliances and apparatus for instruction and experimental work. The Department was not furnished with cows, however, until May 15th, 1892, when eight Durham cows were transferred to it from the Department of Agriculture. Three of these were found to be unsuitable for dairy purposes, being inferior milkers and were sold. In …
Feeding Wheat To Hogs, E.C. Chilcott
Feeding Wheat To Hogs, E.C. Chilcott
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
This experiment was undertaken to answer the following questions:
1. Can the farmers of this state realize more from their wheat by feeding it to hogs, then by selling at present prices of for wheats and hogs?
2. Can wheat be profitability fed without some other food to form a balanced ration?
3. Will it pay to grind wheat as food for hogs?
4. How does wheat compare with corn and peas as food for hogs?
5. How does the quality of pork made from wheat compare with that made from corn, peas, and mixed food?
6. How does the …
