Sorghums For Forage In South Dakota, Manley Champlin, G. Winright Mar 1917

Sorghums For Forage In South Dakota, Manley Champlin, G. Winright

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Sorghum is commonly used for forage in South Dakota. In the United States, three-fourths of the total herbage produced by all sorghums is consumed as coarse forage. Forage sorghums include the species that are more valuable for their edible fodder than for their seed. The most promising of these are the black and red seeded amber canes and Sudan grass. Dwarf milo, reterita kafir, shallu and some others are also grown in some localities. It is the purpose of this bulletin to give the results of comparative trials of the producing power of these crops and to give directions for …

Sugar Beets In South Dakota, J.H. Shepard, R.C. Sherwood Feb 1917

Sugar Beets In South Dakota, J.H. Shepard, R.C. Sherwood

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The object of this Bulletin may be best achieved by describing each year's work separately. But a few words in regard to the four tables which appear on subsequent pages will be in place here. Most of the headings for these tables are self-explanatory, but other relations are brought out by some explanations. In taking the samples for the field tests one whole row 100 ft. long was harvested, counted and weighed. Every beet was used. The third column gives the number of beets analyzed and consequently the number of beets to 100 ft. row. It is evident that the …

Grasshoppers And Their Control, H.C. Severin, G.I. Gilbertson Feb 1917

Grasshoppers And Their Control, H.C. Severin, G.I. Gilbertson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
1. Injury to farm crops may be caused by grasshoppers in every part of South Dakota, but the damage is ordinarily done in alfalfa fields and in areas bordering such fields.
2. The locusts which are responsible for the damage are reared usually in alfalfa fields or along the borders of these fields and are not of the migratory kinds.
3. Locusts are held in check ordinarily by various natural agencies, but when these are lacking, the grasshoppers tend to increase in large numbers. If an outbreak of hoppers is to be prevented under these circumstances, artificial methods of …

Quack Grass And Western Wheat Grass, A.N. Hume, L.S. Sloan Dec 1916

Quack Grass And Western Wheat Grass, A.N. Hume, L.S. Sloan

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary of Bulletin
Quack grass possesses root-stocks of a distinctly brownish yellow color. In addition to the thickness and toughness of the covering, this color is helpful in distinguishing quack grass from other grasses that also possess root-stocks. Page 497.
Any methods for eradicating quack grass must take into account: (1) the prevention of leaf growth, and (2) the destruction of root-stocks. Page 500.
Methods of Destruction
(1) Hand digging.
(2) Tarred-paper or mulching.
(3) Summer fallowing. Page 500
All of these men have followed some modification of the '' summer-fallow system.'' The experience all supports the observation that July …

Pasteurization Of Cream, C. Larsen, V.R. Jones, H. Gregory, M. Tolstrap Nov 1916

Pasteurization Of Cream, C. Larsen, V.R. Jones, H. Gregory, M. Tolstrap

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Pasteurization of cream for butter making purposes is now a common practice. Some European countries have required for some time that all butter be made from pasteurized cream. In America about two-thirds of our butter is now made from pasteurized cream, and pasteurization of cream for butter making is constantly increasing. Considerable experimental work has been done during the past few years on pasteurization of dairy products. The greater part of the work, however, has been in connection with pasteurization of market milk. It is the purpose of these experiments to determine the efficiency and practicability of the coil cream …

Flax Culture In South Dakota, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin, John Martin Nov 1916

Flax Culture In South Dakota, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin, John Martin

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
1. South Dakota ranks fourth among the states in flax production.
2. The total production for this state is rapidly decreasing and the industry will soon be lost if measures are not taken to prevent it.
3. Careful attention to the essentials, such as variety, rotations, soil preparation, selection and treatment of seed, time, rate and depth of seeding, weed prevention and disease prevention will make it possible to produce flax permanently and profitably.
4. Flax commonly grown in South Dakota is all of the small seeded, blue flowered European type. Several pedigreed varieties have been· selected by the …

Transplanting Alfalfa, N.E. Hansen Jun 1916

Transplanting Alfalfa, N.E. Hansen

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

So many letters have been received concerning my method of starting alfalfa by setting one year roots instead of by sowing seed, that it appears timely to summarize the experience up to date in this bulletin. The question is often received, "Do you recommend transplanting to the farmer?” My reply is that I cannot recommend the method to anyone until it is fully standardized and perfected. Hundreds of farmers have had excellent results with transplanting in a limited way for seed. Many have grown seed at the rate of one pound of seed from eight or ten plants and in …

Breakfast Foods And Their Relative Value, G.E. Youngburg Jun 1916

Breakfast Foods And Their Relative Value, G.E. Youngburg

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

There are many breakfast food preparations on the market. They are so important, so many claims are made for them by the different manufacturers, so little seems to be generally known both as to, their cost, actual and comparative, and their food values, that it is thought useful to make analyses covering all the different classes and at the same time to gather data which will enable all interested, especially housekeepers, to make an intelligent choice among the many kinds on the market. This is not the first bulletin of its kind to be published. Other Experiment Stations and the …

Making Butter And Cheese On The Farm, C. Larsen, V.R. Jones Feb 1916

Making Butter And Cheese On The Farm, C. Larsen, V.R. Jones

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

If a person is interested, and is equipped, the making of farm butter and cheese can be made a profitable way of handling the milk and cream. There is no place where so high a quality of butter and cheese can be produced as on the farm, if properly done. The health and cleanliness of the cows, the kind of feed, barn sanitation, the handling of the milk and cream, and all the conditions under which butter and cheese are manufactured can be controlled better on one farm than on many farms. By manufacturing and offering for sale a good …
