Corn Silage For Lambs, J.W. Wilson Jan 1916

Corn Silage For Lambs, J.W. Wilson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

This bulletin includes the results of two experiments in feeding corn silage to lambs. It also includes results of other experiments in feeding lambs at this Station and reported in previous bulletins now out of print. The sheep is the plant scavenger of the farm, and will eat nearly all plants during some stage of their growth. Many plants that have become troublesome weeds on farms would be completely destroyed if the sheep were given a chance to eat them before seeding. Because of this peculiarity sheep raising is a profitable business. Then again, it has been found that a …

Comparative Yields Of Hay, From Several Varieties And Strains Of Alfalfa, At Brookings, Highmore, Cottonwood And Eureka, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

In the following pages, the results of field tests of alfalfa are put down separately for each of the several fields, operated by the Experiment Station. Certain strains of alfalfa have been tested under field conditions at four fields, for three years 1913-1915 inclusive. The average yields of these strains, at the several fields are so made up that they, in turn, may be tentatively averaged, in order to get some indication as to which one of the strains may be adapted to general conditions.

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The present report, has for one of its purposes, the fulfilling of the legal requirement which provides that a report shall be made of the work of the Vivian Farm. It is therefore a narrative of events and observations rather than any attempt to draw final conclusions therefrom. It is assumed that results given in the present report will later be used in Experiment Station bulletins dealing with specific subjects, and more completely analyzed in the light of further results from Vivian and other points. Such results will be published under the department of the South Dakota Experiment Station within …

Silage And Grains For Steers, J.W. Wilson May 1915

Silage And Grains For Steers, J.W. Wilson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
1. With the rapidly increasing price of lands we believe a preliminary feeding period one of the best methods to follow in fattening cattle for market.
2. Corn silage produced more than twice as much grain as sorghum silage when fed as the sole ration. It required over twice as much sorghum silage for a pound of gain as it did corn silage.
3. When three pounds of oil meal were added to both the sorghum and the corn silage rations, the gains were more than doubled over lots that received the silages alone and the cost of producing …

Winter Grain In South Dakota, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin, J.D. Morrison May 1915

Winter Grain In South Dakota, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin, J.D. Morrison

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Winter grain, both wheat and rye, have certain apparent advantages over spring grain. These are as follows:
1. They permit division of labor both seeding and harvest.
2. They ripen early and frequently evade drough [sic] hail storms and plant diseases.
3. Under favorable conditions the winter grain out yields spring grain of the same type.
Since winter grain possesses these advantages over spring grain it would seem strange at first thought that winter grain is not more generally grown in South Dakota. Upon careful consideration it will be seen that owing to the very fact that winter grain is …

Rape Pasture For Pigs In Corn Field Kaoliang And Alfalfa Hay For Pigs, J.W. Wilson Dec 1914

Rape Pasture For Pigs In Corn Field Kaoliang And Alfalfa Hay For Pigs, J.W. Wilson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Some pod: producers in South Dakota practice the turning of their pigs in the cornfield during the late summer and early fall to pick their own feed instead of gathering the corn and hauling it to them. The practice is a good one because it saves much labor. Pigs do well under these conditions, probably because they secure more of a variety of forage with their corn than they would receive in a dry lot or even on a good pasture. By this practice they are required to take exercise which is also a benefit to the growing pig. In …

The Pit Silo, C. Larsen Nov 1914

The Pit Silo, C. Larsen

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The pit or underground silo is useful in the semi-arid sections and on high locations. Where the ground is low, where irrigation is practiced and where the rainfall is great, seepage water will interfere with its usefulness. The pit silo can be built with common home labor. The cost is very low. When once properly built a pit silo is long lived, it never rots, it never blows down, and the silage never freezes in it during the winter. The pit silo can be filled with an ordinary feed cutter costing only about $60. A 6 H. P. engine is …

Selection And Preparation Of Seed Potatoes -- Size Of Seed Piece And Bud Variation, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin, I.S. Oakland Nov 1914

Selection And Preparation Of Seed Potatoes -- Size Of Seed Piece And Bud Variation, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin, I.S. Oakland

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
(1) The average yield from potato seed pieces of equal size, was 15.55 bushels per acre, higher when select tubers were used for seed than when "culls" were used for seed. Page 103.
(2) Thus the present bulletin furnishes quantitative data, supporting the theory that the use of culls for seed, will cause a variety of potatoes to "run out", the effect being measurable in the first generation. Page 103.
(3) The present Bulletin enforces the conclusion of Bulletin No. 140, namely yield per acre definitely is influenced to vary definitely with increase in size of seedpiece. Page 107. …

Testing And Handling Dairy Products, C. Larsen, J.M. Fuller Nov 1914

Testing And Handling Dairy Products, C. Larsen, J.M. Fuller

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

During recent years there has been a widespread demand for information on the various phases of testing dairy products for per cent of butterfat. These requests have come chiefly from farmers who desire to know how to test the cream from their separators, and the milk from their cows for percent of fat. The greatest demand for information along this line has perhaps come from the men who intend to operate, or also operating cream buying stations. These men for various reasons are seldom able to leave their regular business to take a course at the dairy school. Patrons of …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Since the year 1910, the South Dakota Experiment Station, Agronomy Department, has been developing four separate strains of Minnesota 13 corn. These may be grouped into two pairs of strains, the first pair being high protein and low protein and the second pair high oil and low oil. The selection and breeding of these several strains has been carried out in pursuance of a project which was started previous to the organization of the present Agronomy Department, by the then Agronomists, Mr. 0. Willis and Mr. W. L. Burlison. The object of the project as originated, according to the records, …

Trails With Sweet Clover As A Field Crop In South Dakota, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin Aug 1914

Trails With Sweet Clover As A Field Crop In South Dakota, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Throughout the state of South Dakota, farmers are interested in learning about the possibilities of sweet clover. The South Dakota Experiment Station has made trial of this plant in certain cropping systems with a view to having some information available. The present bulletin is offered not at all as a complete treatis1e. It is believed that a brief account of progress with the plant as a crop will be of more immediate value than if its publication be longer delayed.

Weeds, H.S. Coe Apr 1914

Weeds, H.S. Coe

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

This bulletin is intended to meet the already large and steadily increasing demand for information on the weeds of South Dakota. By no means does this publication cover all the weeds of the state, nor weeds which are noxious in only a small part of the state, but the aim is to discuss those weeds most important over the state in general. The descriptions are brief so that anyone may compare them readily with the plants in question. In addition such points are noted as will enable teachers of rural schools in South Dakota to use this bulletin as a …

Summary
1. The results show that all of the steers made good gains while receiving corn silage as the sole roughage ration.
2. Oil meal, dried distilled grains and cottonseed meal are valuable feeds to mix with corn silage for the economical production of a pound of gain. The results show that their relative value ranks in the order mentioned above.
3. The largest gains and .the most uniform gains were made by steers in lot that received oil meal and corn silage. The average daily gain compares favorably with the gains made by steers of a similar age receiving …

Effect Of Alkali Water On Dairy Cows, C. Larsen, D.E. Bailey Dec 1913

Effect Of Alkali Water On Dairy Cows, C. Larsen, D.E. Bailey

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

While alkali water is not general in South Dakota, it is prevalent in certain sections of the. Semi-arid portions of the state. In some places the water is so charged with soluble minerals that it has been a question whether cows and other stock could drink it without being injured. In some of these sections the cows became ''alkalied.'' By many this disease was laid to drinking the alkali water. In a previous bulletin (Bul. 132) the results of the experiments on the effects of alkali water on dairy products are reported. The effects of this kind of water on …

Some Varieties And Strains Of Wheat, And Their Yields In South Dakota, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin Nov 1913

Some Varieties And Strains Of Wheat, And Their Yields In South Dakota, A.N. Hume, Manley Champlin

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

If anyone knows the characteristics of any kind of wheat that may be grown, he is usually interested in its yielding power. Conversely if anyone finds out that any kind of wheat is a good yielder, he wishes to know its name and characteristics. It is the purpose of the present bulletin to classify and describe some of the wheats most commonly grown and inquired about in South Dakota. Having thus define these varieties and strains of wheat, it is the purpose to summarize them according to their average yields. These latter have been determined by tests made at the …
