Root Crop Culture In South Dakota, Manley Champlin, G. Winright Mar 1918

Root Crop Culture In South Dakota, Manley Champlin, G. Winright

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
1.
Root crops increase in importance with the growth of the dairy and livestock interests.
2. The common root crops include sugar beets, mangel wurzels, carrots, rutabagas and turnips. Of these, mangels produce the highest tonnage per acre, but sugar beets produce the greatest feed value per acre.
3 A loam soil is best for root crops. Sticky clays increase the difficulty in securing a stand and in harvesting.
4. Root crops make considerable growth during the fall, thus utilizing a part of the season when most crops are dormant. This helps to make them relatively sure.
5. Manuring …

Injurious Corn Insects, H.C. Severin Mar 1918

Injurious Corn Insects, H.C. Severin

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Reliable estimates of the average yearly loss of growing corn (not including stored corn) thru insect attack in the United States is placed at 10 to 15 per cent of the total value. In South Dakota the loss is less than 10 per cent, but nevertheless it is a considerable yearly tax upon the farmers of our state and one which can be greatly reduced thru proper application of control measures based upon a thoro [sic] knowledge of the life of these harmful insects and methods of their work.It is our aim in this bulletin to discuss briefly· only the …

The Sheep, J.W. Wilson, B.L. Thompson Mar 1918

The Sheep, J.W. Wilson, B.L. Thompson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The sheep is one of the most profitable animals on the farm. Besides increasing the fertility of the land sheep furnish two incomes during the year, namely; from the sale of wool in the summer and from the sale of lambs in ·the fall or winter. Sheep are economical meat producers, requiring less than the average number of pounds of feed to produce a pound of gain. This gain usually brings as much in the market as gain made by any other meat-producing animal. The gain is oftentimes made under conditions where other animals would starve, and also from vegetation …

Corn Culture In South Dakota, Manley Champlin, G. Winright Mar 1918

Corn Culture In South Dakota, Manley Champlin, G. Winright

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
1.
Corn was first cultivated by white people in the colony of Virginia in 1608, and has increased in importance until it now ranks first in value among all grain crops in the United States and in South Dakota
2. South Dakota is peculiarly adapted to supply seed corn to the states north and west. These states grow corn for roughage every year, but as a rule do not produce seed for their own use.
3. The production of corn in South Dakota may be increased by the more general use of adapted varieties. Still further improvement may be …

Emmer In South Dakota, Manley Champlin, J.D. Morrison Mar 1918

Emmer In South Dakota, Manley Champlin, J.D. Morrison

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Inquiries are being received requesting information in regard to emmer as a war crop for South Dakota, the impression being that this crop would assist in solving the food problem, because of its ability to produce twice as many pounds per acre as spring wheat. This gives an excellent opportunity to correct a number of false impressions in regard to emmer as a crop for South Dakota conditions. Please note the term emmer is used exclusively. The reason for this is that there is practically no speltz being grown in South Dakota. The commonly called speltz is not true speltz, …

Potato Culture In South Dakota, Manly Champlin, G. Winright Dec 1917

Potato Culture In South Dakota, Manly Champlin, G. Winright

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
1. Potato production in South Dakota increased 120.8 per cent from 1906 to 1915.
2. Yield and table value must be considered in deciding which variety to grow. Acme and White Harvest, extra early varieties have proved best at Cottonwood. Irish Cobbler and Eureka, medium early, are best at Brookings, Highmore and Eureka. At Brookings the late varieties, Raleigh, Bugless and Late Rose have also given very satisfactory returns. The Irish Cobbler and Early Ohio seem best adapted for general culture throughout the state and the Acme has given best results for early market.
3. Seed Potatoes should be …

The County Farm Bureau & County Agent In South Dakota, I. B. Johnson Oct 1917

The County Farm Bureau & County Agent In South Dakota, I. B. Johnson

SDSU Extension Circulars

The Farm Bureau and the County Agent movement was started in South Dakota in 1913 when Codington and Spink Counties organized for the purpose of securing the services of a County Agricultural Agent. This was two years prior to the enactment of the present South Dakota Farm Bureau law, but the farmers of those counties saw the value of Farm Bureau work and through personal efforts secured financial assistance from the county and the United States Department of Agriculture for employing a county agent. When the Smith-Lever Act was passed by Congress in 1914, it gave an immense impetus to …

The Role Of Water In A Dairy Cow's Ration, C. Larsen, C., Hungerford, E. H. And Bailey, D. E., E.H. Hungerford, D.E. Baily

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

In connection with the investigations by this department on ''The Effect of Alkali Water on Dairy Cows and Dairy Products'' it became evident that the information on the functions of water in the ration of a dairy cow was meager. Furthermore, during this work some clews were obtained which the investigators desired to carry to a conclusion. . . . It is the object of the investigation reported in this bulletin to study the effects of watering the cow at different intervals and in varying amounts upon the amount of food consumed, digestibility of nutrients, amount and composition of feces …
