Transportation Of Poultry And Poultry Products From The North Central States, W. H. Thompson Oct 1958

Transportation Of Poultry And Poultry Products From The North Central States, W. H. Thompson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

This study was designed to analyze the transportation factors involved in the movement of poultry and poultry products from origins in the North Central Region. The commodities were transported by two media-railroads and motor carriers. Because data currently published by private and public sources do not adequately nor accurately cover the factors analyzed in this report, it was necessary to work directly with the records of cooperating shippers and carriers. Until such time as public regulatory agencies or carrier associations require or encourage the reporting of this data by all carriers, this technique will continue to be necessary, if transportation …

Boar-Progeny Performance Differences, J.W. Mccarty Sep 1958

Boar-Progeny Performance Differences, J.W. Mccarty

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1958

Of several possible performance comparisons among pigs, one of the most striking is often that between groups of pigs sired by different boars. Just looking at groups of pigs sorted according to sire may not be very informative. However, records showing the average performance of groups of pigs by several sires will often suggest that there are real differences among sires in their breeding ability. Sire groups are likely to include rather large numbers of offspring out of several different sows, farrowed on the same farm and in the same season, The fact that pigs by pigs in other sire …

The Effects Of Hygromycin Alone And In Combination With Chlortetracycline On Growing-Finishing Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom Sep 1958

The Effects Of Hygromycin Alone And In Combination With Chlortetracycline On Growing-Finishing Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1958

Hygromycin is a '''relatively new" antibiotic that is recommended for its ability to control certain internal parasites in swine. Previous work has shown that it is very effective against roundworms, nodular worms and whip worms. In some of these trials hygromycin has increased gains comparable to other antibiotics. However, these studies did not show whether the increased gains from feeding hygromycin were due to the control of roundworms or due to a growth stimulating effects similar to that exhibited by other antibiotics. In order to obtain more information on the role 6f hygromycin swine feeding this experiment was conducted in …

The Effect Of Injectable And Oral Iron For Baby Pigs, Eldon Juhl, Richard C. Wahlstrom Sep 1958

The Effect Of Injectable And Oral Iron For Baby Pigs, Eldon Juhl, Richard C. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1958

Iron is an essential mineral element for all animals. It is particularly important for the baby pig because they are born with only small amounts of iron stored in their bodies and milk does not contain enough iron to meet their needs. Therefore, some supplemental source of iron is needed in order to prevent anemia. Anemia can cause death of pigs but more often the losses from anemia are due to reduced growth and a lowered resistance to other diseases.

Economic And Legal Aspects Of Vertical Integration, Dale C. Dale Jul 1958

Economic And Legal Aspects Of Vertical Integration, Dale C. Dale

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Vertical integration, on the other hand, is the grouping of two or more complementary firms on different levels of the production-marketing process. For example, a processor and a farmer may unite or a supplier, farmer, processor and wholesaler may combine under centralized management. The key idea is the extent of control that can be exercised by the central decision maker or "integrator," It is important to understand that vertical integration is concerned only with single enterprises or single commodities at the present time. A multi-enterprise farmer may integrate only part of his farming operation. A farmer who deals in wheat, …

The Fourth "H" Is Health : Family Health, Helen Becker, Don K. Wiles

SDSU Extension Circulars

Family health depends in part upon (1) hygiene and grooming habits, (2) sanitation practices, and (3) emergency preparations. During the year, you are expected to make two or more improvements to your family's health habits or practices. This manual will discuss how this requirement might be met. To meet this requirement, you need the full cooperation of your parents and other members of your family. This means that you and your family will have to hold several family discussions on the problem of family health. During these sessions members of your family should study their personal health habits, the family's …

The Fourth "H" Is Health : Personal Health, Helen Becker, Don K. Wiles

SDSU Extension Circulars

"The 4th H is Health." Your 4-H pledge says, "I pledge my Health to better living." This means that you must develop good health habits. Because your health is effected by your habits, this unit of the 4-H health activity is devoted to the study of personal health habits. You are expected to study your habits, determine ways for improvement and to correct some of your faults. Usually, it is advisable to try to change only a few faults at a time; rather than all of them at once. If you continuously work at self improvement, you will be surprised …

Beef Performance Testing On Farm And Ranch, Henry P. Holzman Jun 1958

Beef Performance Testing On Farm And Ranch, Henry P. Holzman

SDSU Extension Circulars

This circular has been prepared to assist in answering the increasing number of questions being asked by producers of commercial and purebred cattle about the methods, principles and values of the Performance Test for beef cattle. Performance testing is nothing new. Improvement in livestock ever since the beginning of the various breeds, has been due to some form of performance test. Such tests have been based on either observation or some form of records. Knowledge of underlying principles and the relative value of different methods has, until recent years, been lacking in beef cattle testing. Research projects conducted during the …

Planning A Father-Son Farm Partnership, C. H. Denrud Jun 1958

Planning A Father-Son Farm Partnership, C. H. Denrud

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

Almost one-third of the farmers in South Dakota in 1954 were over 55 years of age, according to the U. S. Agricultural Census. Many farmers find it advantageous to retire from actual farming and rent out their farms at age 65, in order to qualify for Social Security benefits. This means that a large number of new farm operators are needed each year. At the same time, thousands of farm boys are confronted with the task of selecting their life work. Many would like to farm, but are wondering how they can ever raise the capital required. The day is …

Indexing Beef Cattle, C. A. Dinkel, J. A. Minyard

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

The primary purpose of this circular is to furnish some simplifications in the procedure presently in use in South Dakota for indexing beef cattle. As more data become available, t h e s e methods may change and in that event, supplements will be distributed. Such differences as exist between the shortcut methods presented here and those presently in use will be pointed out as they are taken up in the circular. The methods presented here are based on data taken in private herds in the state as well as in Experiment Station herds. Where there appeared to be a …

Methionine And Related Compounds And Selenium Poisoning, O.E. Olson, C.W. Carlson, Eriks Lettis May 1958

Methionine And Related Compounds And Selenium Poisoning, O.E. Olson, C.W. Carlson, Eriks Lettis

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

The problem of selenium poisoning has been known for many years, but the mechanism by which this element exerts its toxicity has not been clarified. As a result, what control measures are now available are of an empirical nature, and they fail to the give the most desirable protection. In search of a better control mechanism, the role of compounds containing biologically active methyl groups has been studied. Some experimental work indicated that these types of compounds might indeed be involved in the metabolism of selenium. However, not all workers’ data were in agreement, and it was felt that further …

Wintering Calves With Alfalfa Hay Or Prairie Hay, L. B. Embry, A. C. Dittman, G. F. Gastler Apr 1958

Wintering Calves With Alfalfa Hay Or Prairie Hay, L. B. Embry, A. C. Dittman, G. F. Gastler

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Alfalfa hay has been recognized for many years as being a high-quality roughage for cattle. However, some cattle feeders in the state prefer prairie hay over alfalfa hay.
The experiment reported here was designed to compare the performance of calves wintered on (1) alfalfa hay alone, (2) a mixture of alfalfa hay and prairie hay, (3) prairie hay and soybean meal pellets, and (4) prairie hay alone. In addition to these companions, some studies were made on the effect of winter gains on summer performance of the calves when grazing native prairie pasture.

Effect Of Various Feed Additives On Gain, Feed Efficiency And Digestibility Of Rations By Lambs, Paul R. Zimmer Mar 1958

Effect Of Various Feed Additives On Gain, Feed Efficiency And Digestibility Of Rations By Lambs, Paul R. Zimmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is now an established practice to feed continuously certain feed additives in the rations of simple stomach animals for the control of disease, digestive troubles, bloat, internal parasites and for their growth stimulating properties. It is very important that additives of an antibacterial nature in rations for ruminants be studied thoroughly so their beneficial effects, if any, can be determined. If the bacteria are not functioning normally and digesting properly, the animal will suffer. Digestion of the ration would also be affected, and the efficiency of feed conversion would diminish. Supplements to the ruminant ration in the form of …

Dual, An Early Grain And Forage Sorghum, C. J. Franzke Mar 1958

Dual, An Early Grain And Forage Sorghum, C. J. Franzke

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Dual is a new grain and forage sorghum for South Dakota which grows taller than either Reliance or Norghum. It was developed to provide the stockman with a grain sorghum having a high yield of sweet, juicy forage for both fodder and silage. Tests conducted at several locations on widely different soil types and under varying climatic conditions show Dual is well adapted to the sorghum growing areas of the state. About 8,000 pounds of Dual seed were released by the South Dakota State College Agricultural Experiment Station to the County Crop Improvement Associations in the spring of 1958.
