Physiological Studies On Bloat, Clarence Leonard Moore Feb 1959

Physiological Studies On Bloat, Clarence Leonard Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bloat is a complex and confusing syndrome involving an interaction of plant and animal factors. Many “toxic” principles of plants have been incriminated either by directly inhibiting rumen motility and eructation or indirectly by changing the physical characteristics of the rumen ingests. Variations in anatomical structures, activity of such structures and microbiological activity all might be animal factors which are involve. The development of the livestock industry and the use of legumes in pasture programs have grown very rapidly during the past decade. Recent studies have been directed towards the biochemical constituents of legumes that might contribute to bloat. Attention …

A Study Of Factors Influencing Weaning Weights Of Beef Calves, Joe Allen Minyard Feb 1959

A Study Of Factors Influencing Weaning Weights Of Beef Calves, Joe Allen Minyard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability of the cow to wean a heavy, vigorous and good quality calf every year is probably the most important economic trait in a beef cattle enterprise. But wide variations in the weaning weight of beef calves exist in almost every herd. These variations persist despite possible continued selection and general improvement and form the basis for further genetic improvement of the trait. Background information necessary for the development of effective herd improvement programs include knowledge of (1) the variability present in the performance traits, (2) the relative importance of heredity on the expression of the traits, and (3) …

The Dakota Indian Religion, A Study Of Conflict In Values, V. D. Malan, C. J. Jesser Feb 1959

The Dakota Indian Religion, A Study Of Conflict In Values, V. D. Malan, C. J. Jesser

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Religious beliefs have exerted substantial influence on the values of the Dakota Indians. In earlier days religious folklore infused every area of their daily lives. When the missionaries introduced Chnstianity to the tribes on the Great Plains, important changes began to take place. Values which conflicted with customary beliefs were interposed, but many of the traditional values were retained. In some cases, accommodation of conflicting values was attempted in marginal religious activities which combined elements of both the old and new religions. In other cases, the conflicts appeared insurmountable, and some individuals sought escape or succumbed to apathy.

High Quality Oats For Growing Pigs, R. C. Wahlstrom Feb 1959

High Quality Oats For Growing Pigs, R. C. Wahlstrom

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

These trials indicate that high quality oats is a good feed for growing-finishing swine. The results show that you can satisfactorily use it to replace up to 40% of the corn in rations when your pigs are on pasture. When they are in dry lot you can replace up to 50% of the corn in mixed rations. Oats with a test weight of less than 35 pounds a bushel may not be as satisfactory.

Water Systems For The Farm, William Peterson Jan 1959

Water Systems For The Farm, William Peterson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Water under pressure is necessary on the modern farm. Probably more tons of water are needed than any other single product handled on the farm. Handling it automatically, with a pressure system, will save much work and time. Without water under pressure, animals often do not get enough water and production efficiency suffers. The home will be more sanitary if plenty of water, under pressure, is available.

Nesting Of Mourning Doves In Eastern South Dakota, Lloyd E. Oldenburg Jan 1959

Nesting Of Mourning Doves In Eastern South Dakota, Lloyd E. Oldenburg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mourning dove¹, not presently a game bird in South Dakota, is gaining support toward that status. During the 1959 state legislative season a bill sponsored by the Department of Game, Fish and Parks to place the mourning dove on the game bird list was passed by the House and defeated by the Senate. In a special dove issue of Outdoor California, January 1959, W.K. Kiel (9) stated there are currently 30 states which allow dove hunting. No state bordering South Dakota has an open dove season. However, in a special memorandum of March 7, 1958, the Nebraska Game, Forestation …

A Study Of The Manufacture Of Cultured Butter And Retail Store Sales In Brookings, South Dakota, Shirley W. Seas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Butter consumption in the united stated had dropped to 8.4 pounds per capita in 1953 from approximately 17 pounds prior to World War II. There has been only a very slight increase during the last five years. Dairy industry leaders and research workers have south to find the reason for this situation and possible remedies for it. A recent consumer preference study conducted by Rollag and Krist Janson (21) in Brookings and Sioux Falls, South Dakota indicated a fairly strong preference for high quality butter with a considerable amount of flavor obtained by adding butter culture to the butter. The …

Evaluation Of Final Weight In The Selection Of Performance Tested Bulls, Delwyn D. Dearborn Jan 1959

Evaluation Of Final Weight In The Selection Of Performance Tested Bulls, Delwyn D. Dearborn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selection of herd sires, in the past, by the beef breeders in South Dakota has primarily been based on type. In general, the beef breeder has attempted to purchase the bull with the most attractive conformation based on his personal judgement. This method of selection has brought limited progress to the largest industry in South Dakota from which 35% of the cash farm income is derived. The purpose of this study was to check the feasibility of using final weight as a criterion in the selection of performance tested bulls. The other phases of the study concerned final weight as …

Wildlife Utilization Of Stock Ponds In Minnehaha County, South Dakota, James D. Swanson Jan 1959

Wildlife Utilization Of Stock Ponds In Minnehaha County, South Dakota, James D. Swanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Man’s agricultural activities in South Dakota have greatly altered environmental conditions for nearly all forms of wildlife. Draining and ditching in eastern South Dakota have decreased the acreage of wetlands available to waterfowl and furbearers. Results of conversation practices carried out under the Agricultural Conservation Program as reported by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (1) show that between 1936 and 1937 South Dakota farmers had drained 760,198 acres. Drainage of wetland areas changed once valuable wildlife habitat into drylands which are of little value to waterfowl and furbearers. Waterfowl breeding grounds have been so greatly reduced that few …

Analysis Of Summer Spotlighting For Determining Deer Populations Indices, Donald C. Duerre Jan 1959

Analysis Of Summer Spotlighting For Determining Deer Populations Indices, Donald C. Duerre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Man changes his environment to suit his needs. In doing so he has destroyed forests, plowed the land, and built cities. Deer have adopted themselves to these changes, and in many instances populations have erupted as a result. Their ability to survive advancement of civilization and increasing hunting pressure has made deer the most important big-game animal in America, The importance of deer as a game animal has caused game agencies to institute more intensive management programs. Proper management of this species has long been a problem of game technicians. In order to obtain an optimum annual harvest, the technician …

There are indications of variation in resistance between different breeds of swine and cattle. The relationship of sex to resistance. There are indications that a sex difference may exist in beef cattle since in some herds bulls are affected more …

The Effects Of Feeding A Ration Containing Erythromycin Thiocyanate To Growing-Finishing, Eldon Walter Juhl Jan 1959

The Effects Of Feeding A Ration Containing Erythromycin Thiocyanate To Growing-Finishing, Eldon Walter Juhl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A large number of Midwest farmers depend upon the swine enterprise for a part of their annual income. Swine sales constitute a large per cent of the cash farm income in this geographical area and therefore these animals represent a very important phase of livestock production. Approximately 18 per cent of the total cash farm income in South Dakota is obtained from the production of hogs. A successful swine producer is primarily interested in obtaining the greatest return for his financial investment and labor output. In order to attain these goals it is often desirable to feed a highly fortified …
