Studies On The Analysis And Esterification Of Cholesterol, Marvin Lee Withrow
Studies On The Analysis And Esterification Of Cholesterol, Marvin Lee Withrow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The recent widespread interest in the cause of atherosclerosis in humans has stimulated research in many fields of science. Articles describing cholesterol experiments on humans and lower animals indicate that an elevation of the blood level of cholesterol increases the incidence of atherosclerosis. Bloor and colleagues suggested an interrelationship between the metabolism of cholesterol and the highly unsaturated fatty acids of the blood. In these experiments it was found that the fatty acids present in neutral fat had the lowest unsaturation, the phospholipids contained the fatty acids of intermediate unsaturation, and the fatty acids present in cholesterol esters had the …

Some Effects Of Environment On Laying Hens, Lawrence U. Rubida
Some Effects Of Environment On Laying Hens, Lawrence U. Rubida
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Good management dictates that laying hens be confined; so, environment to a laying hen is made up of conditions within the house in which she lives. These conditions, in South Dakota, range from poultry houses that put the hen under condition of stress to houses that offer the hen many comforts. The principal question is, does money spent on improving the conditions within a house pay for itself? Payments could be in the form of lower mortality, increased production, better feed efficiency or a combination of any or all factors. Among the environmental conditions that may affect the hen’s performance …
A Teaching Approach To Selected Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Helen E. Rezatto
A Teaching Approach To Selected Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Helen E. Rezatto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The basic purpose of this thesis is to report the use of a promising approach to specific portions of the work of Ernest Hemingway suitable for upper-level Freshmen English students. The six short stories selected are: “Indian Camp,” “the Battler,” “A Very Short Story,” “Soldier’s home,” “Big Two-Hearted River, I & II”, and “The Captial of the World”. All of the stories except eh last are from Hemingway’s first collection to achieve critical acclaim, In Our Time. In addition to these stories, the short sketches or vignettes which act as inter-chapters between the stories of In Our Time, are studied. …
Stilbestrol For Growing-Fattening Cattle, Dean Vinton Radabaugh
Stilbestrol For Growing-Fattening Cattle, Dean Vinton Radabaugh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The production of beef in South Dakota is one of the largest industries in the state. Those in the business of producing beef are constantly looking for newer methods of management, nutrition and breeding which will economically increase the production of beef. It has been shown that adding diethylstilbestrol to the rations or implanting diethylstilbestrol pellets in the ears will generally economically increase beef production by increasing rate of gains and feed efficiency. Several questions have been raised by livestock producers and research workers since the introduction of stilbestrol in beef cattle production. Some questions are: Does the administration of …

The Effects Of Colchicine On An Inbred Line Of Corn, Raymond A. Moore
The Effects Of Colchicine On An Inbred Line Of Corn, Raymond A. Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Investigation with mutagenic agents to increase variability in plants have met with some success in the improvement of agronomic crops. One such agent is colchicine, a poisonous alkaloid extracted from the autumn-flowering crocus (Colchicum autumale L.). Evidence of the mutagenic nature of colchicine without changing the chromosome numbers, has been shown in sorghum. Observations of the variability induced in sorghum lines by colchicine treatment inspired the present study which was undertaken to determine what effects this chemical might have on an inbred line of corn. Results similar to those in sorghum could be of utmost importance in corn breeding since …

The Effect Of Horseradish Peroxidase On Some Organic Peroxides, Dennis Lietz
The Effect Of Horseradish Peroxidase On Some Organic Peroxides, Dennis Lietz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Horseradish peroxidase is a well-known enzyme and one that is often studied. It is well suited for enzyme studies due to its availability, relative ease of preparation, and stability. Although a wealth of knowledge has been gained about this enzyme, very little can actually be said about the mechanism of the reaction. Much of the work that has been done has been concerned with the reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Methyl and ethyl hydroperoxides have also been studied in some detail but only a very few references can be found concerning the action of the enzyme on other organic peroxides. The …
Comparison Of Cellulose Digestion In Vivo And In Vitro, Charles Frederick Lefevre
Comparison Of Cellulose Digestion In Vivo And In Vitro, Charles Frederick Lefevre
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Because of the time consuming and costly nature of the total collection in vivo digestion trials, various other methods have been tried to get reliable digestibility data in a faster and less costly manner. One of the more recent methods being used is the “artificial rumen” (in vitro) technique. This method makes use of rumen bacteria and simulated conditions in the rumen of the animal. Cost, tie, and labor saving are definitely in its favor. Some of the work reported indicates the in vitro technique can be a useful method in nutrition research. Studies on the effect of stage of …

Acreage Response Of South Dakota Wheat Producers To Expected Price Changes, 1955, Richard Hoyt Kruse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prices have long been considered to be an important factor influencing agricultural production. The diversity of views as to the effectiveness of prices in allocating resources in agriculture has served to emphasize the need for further research on this problem. South Dakota is primarily an agricultural state and is vitally concerned with the problem of adjustment. Geographic and economic conditions in South Dakota are widely different from other parts of the nation. This study was undertaken in order that legislators and other policy makers might have access to more research results in formulating future agricultural policies. The purpose of this …
The Amino Acid Composition Of Four Varieties Of Rice From India, Devaki B. Kripalani
The Amino Acid Composition Of Four Varieties Of Rice From India, Devaki B. Kripalani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, emphasis has been placed on the evaluation of protein quality rather than the total quantity of protein in foods. This is indeed a timely approach, as utilization of the amino acids, which are constituents of proteins, is dependent on all of the essential amino acids being present simultaneously and in proper proportion. Because rice is widely used by the people in India and since there is no particularly rich source of protein, other than the pulses, in the diet of common people, more information on the amino acid composition of the foods (especially rice) commonly consumed, is …

Mysticism In Selected Early Novels Of John Steinbeck, Tom E. Kakonis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this essay is to trace the development of the concept of mysticism from selected early works of John Steinbeck to its culmination in the novel the Grapes of Wrath. The works to be discussed are the following: The Features of Heaven, To a God Unknown, In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, The Red Pony, The Grapes of Wrath, and Sea of Cortez. Such a study requires, a basic, historical knowledge in two other areas. The first involves a familiarity with Oriental specifically Hindu, mystical beliefs; the second, the early backgrounds of mysticism in American literature as …

The Physiology And Some Nutritional Aspects Of A Rumen Bacterium, Norma P. Christopherson
The Physiology And Some Nutritional Aspects Of A Rumen Bacterium, Norma P. Christopherson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the interesting symbiotic relationships in nature is that existing between the ruminants and their microbial population. This arrangement has solved for them the problem of existing on an herbivorous diet. Most mammals can derive little benefit from the potentially available energy in plant materials, which is locked in the complex, insoluble polysaccharide, cellulose. Cellulase is not a mammalian enzyme, but it is part of the chemical machinery of a number of bacteria, some species of which reside in the rumen. Many different organisms are present and their biochemical activities have not as yet been completely delineated. All of …
An Organism Resembling Sphaerophorus Necrophorus Isolated From A Beef Liver Abscess, James C. Canada
An Organism Resembling Sphaerophorus Necrophorus Isolated From A Beef Liver Abscess, James C. Canada
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Condemned beef livers cause a loss of several million dollars each year. This loss is felt not only by the meat packer, but the animal husbandryman as well as the consumer. Percentagewise, the United States annually condemns in federally inspected meat packing plants between two and 20 percent of all beef livers. These beef livers are principally of three pathological types. These types include liver abscesses, telangiectasia, and the “sawdust” liver. Little is known of the three liver conditions in regard to their causative agents. By microscopic examination usually one finds gram-negative, granular filaments approximately 100 microns in length present …

Results Obtained From New And Remodeled Poultry Houses In South Dakota, Boyd J. Bonzer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this survey was to attempt, in an organized way, to determine the opinion of a group of flock owners who were using poultry house recommendations included in South Dakota College Extension Circular 516, Modern Poultry Housing, March, 1956. Early in 1958 the circular was in short supply for the second time since the original printing. As a result, the Extension Poultry Office had been granted authority to have another supply printed. At this time it seemed important to delay reprinting the circular until some of its contents could be evaluated. An attempt to determine how many of …
The Effects Of Relaxin On The Composition Of Bovine Milk, Chris H. Nissen
The Effects Of Relaxin On The Composition Of Bovine Milk, Chris H. Nissen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Protoplasm is a fragile substance keeping its homeostatic properties by many physiochemical phenomena. Much is known about the properties of protoplasm; but it is, perhaps, only meager when compared to what is yet to be learned. Such physical changes as electrical impulses, diffusion, and oxidation – to mention a few – are necessary for protoplasm to retain its integrity. In higher animals, particularity, for our purpose, mammals, protoplasm is sustained by different body system working harmoniously together to supply raw materials that remove waste, and govern all endeavors. One should not infer that single called animals have a more simple …
The Blood Picture In Correlation With Bloat, Dale A. Yarns
The Blood Picture In Correlation With Bloat, Dale A. Yarns
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bloat may spell disaster to any farmer on a given day. This kind of disaster is typical and not infrequent in ruminates especially cattle and sheep. Bloat affects polygastrics, why not monogastrics? Ruminants or polygastrics have a four compartment stomach utilizing protozoa and bacteria similar to a fermentation vat which catabolizes complex substrates into simple digestible nutrients while the monogastrics rely on secretions from the stomach lining. Primarily fermentation takes are water and larger amount of free gas, which can accumulate in the rumen when disposal is impaired. Why do animals dispose of these large quantities of gas 364 days …
The Moral Order Of William Faulkner, Shirley Lease Kay
The Moral Order Of William Faulkner, Shirley Lease Kay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to indicate William Faulkner’s belief in a moral order and then to show how this may be taught in the novel Light in August. I believe that there is more to Faulkner that “the agony and the rhetoric” and that his works are not merely” [tales] told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, and signifying nothing.” By considering our questions, I hope to establish the type of moral order in which Faulkner believes. These questions are (1) What is Faulkner’s attitude toward nature? (2) What is evil to him? (3) How does …

An Attempt To Develop Resistance In The Udder Against Streptococcus Dysgalactiae And Escherichia Coli, Donald E. Otterby
An Attempt To Develop Resistance In The Udder Against Streptococcus Dysgalactiae And Escherichia Coli, Donald E. Otterby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of mastitis in dairy animals has received much attention in recent years. As the business of dairying has developed and grown, mastitis has become more significant to the farmer and the processor. The economic loss from reduced production and sale of milk, loss of breeding animals, veterinary and medical fees is paramount. Much of the emphasis when dealing with mastitis has been on cure rather than prevention. Despite the extensive investigations of antibiotics and other chemo-therapeutic agents as a cure for mastitis, a completely satisfactory answer to the mastitis problem has not been found. Recent research has suggested …
