Defamation Via Hyperlinks: More Than Meets The Eye, Gary Kok Yew Chan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Hyperlinks make the World Wide Web go round. They find and connect information and content from a wealth of sources on the web including, from time to time, defamatory material. Newton, the owner and operator of a website in British Columbia, posted an article entitled “Free Speech in Canada”. The article itself was not alleged to be defamatory of Crookes, a politician. However, it incorporated hyperlinks to other internet websites that contained defamatory material. Notwithstanding requests from Crookes and his lawyer, Newton refused to remove the hyperlinks. Did Newton’s act of hyperlinking to internet websites constitute “publication” of the defamatory …

Clustered Subsampling For Clinically Informed Diagnostic Brain Mapping, Malin Björnsdotter, Diego Sona, Sonny Rosenthal, Justin Dauwels
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Brain based diagnostic systems have recently received attention as a tool in the characterization and diagnosis of a variety of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. Nonetheless, a majority of disorders are still diagnosed entirely based on symptom assessments and behavioral correlates. We therefore propose a method for fusing brain responses with clinical measures for improved diagnosis. To this end, we utilized the flexibility of clustered random subspace brain mapping to detect regions where brain responses in conjunction with a clinical measure could reliably differentiate patients from control subjects. We demonstrate the approach on realistically simulated functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain …

Identifying Event-Related Bursts Via Social Media Activities, Xin Zhao, Baihan Shu, Jing Jiang, Yang Song, Hongfei Yan, Xiaoming Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Activities on social media increase at a dramatic rate. When an external event happens, there is a surge in the degree of activities related to the event. These activities may be temporally correlated with one another, but they may also capture different aspects of an event and therefore exhibit different bursty patterns. In this paper, we propose to identify event-related bursts via social media activities. We study how to correlate multiple types of activities to derive a global bursty pattern. To model smoothness of one state sequence, we propose a novel function which can capture the state context. The experiments …
A More Economic And Cross-Jurisdiction Study On Patent Pools, Kung-Chung Liu
A More Economic And Cross-Jurisdiction Study On Patent Pools, Kung-Chung Liu
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This paper traces the growing acceptance of the more economic approach to IPR and competition law in state practices, and summarizes its characteristics. It then compares how five jurisdictions weigh the IPR licensing agreements against competition law in the context of patent pools, which have become critically effective mechanism for both patent enforcement and the deployment of new technology. It further analyzes the major difference found, namely the abuse of a dominant position by patent pools, and how to look at this difference and even how to harmonize it. It then moves on to study the impact of antitrust violation …
Rejoinder: Real-Time Road Traffic Forecasting Using Regime-Switching Space-Time Models And Adaptive Lasso, Yiannis Kamarianakis, Wei Shen, Laura Wynter
Rejoinder: Real-Time Road Traffic Forecasting Using Regime-Switching Space-Time Models And Adaptive Lasso, Yiannis Kamarianakis, Wei Shen, Laura Wynter
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Kamarianakis et al. presented a promising application of multivariate time series analysis to the traffic condition forecasting problem in urban transportation networks. Interest is keen and growing in providing accurate predictions of link and route travel conditions, especially in the context of the burgeoning demand for ‘real-time’ traveler information. Forecasts underlying this information must be sufficiently accurate for the traveler information provided to be of tangible value. As the authors clearly pointed out, although the near ubiquitous availability of urban traffic condition data makes area-wide forecasts theoretically possible, scalability to area-wide networks and the required speed of forecast generation represent …

Adaptive Cgf For Pilots Training In Air Combat Simulation, Teck-Hou Teng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Wee-Sze Ong, Kien-Lip Lee
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Training of combat fighter pilots is often conducted using either human opponents or non-adaptive computer-generated force (CGF) inserted with the doctrine for conducting air combat mission. The novelty and challenges of such non-adaptive doctrine-driven CGF is often lost quickly. Incorporating more complex knowledge manually is known to be tedious and time-consuming. Therefore, a study of using adaptive CGF to learn from the real-time interactions with human pilots to extend the existing doctrine is conducted in this work. The goal of this study is to show how an adaptive CGF can be more effective than a non-adaptive doctrine-driven CGF for simulator-based …
Parameter Synthesis For Hierarchical Concurrent Real-Time Systems, Étienne André, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Parameter Synthesis For Hierarchical Concurrent Real-Time Systems, Étienne André, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Modeling and verifying complex real-time systems, involving timing delays, are notoriously difficult problems. Checking the correctness of a system for one particular value for each delay does not give any information for other values. It is hence interesting to reason parametrically, by considering that the delays are parameters (unknown constants) and synthesize a constraint guaranteeing a correct behavior. We present here Parametric Stateful Timed CSP, a language capable of specifying hierarchical real-time systems with complex data structures. Although we prove that the synthesis is undecidable in general, we present an algorithm for efficient parameter synthesis that behaves well in practice.

Joint Learning For Coreference Resolution With Markov Logic, Yang Song, Jing Jiang, Xin Zhao, Sujian Li, Houfeng Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Pairwise coreference resolution models must merge pairwise coreference decisions to generate final outputs. Traditional merging methods adopt different strategies such as the best first method and enforcing the transitivity constraint, but most of these methods are used independently of the pairwise learning methods as an isolated inference procedure at the end. We propose a joint learning model which combines pairwise classification and mention clustering with Markov logic. Experimental results show that our joint learning system outperforms independent learning systems. Our system gives a better performance than all the learning-based systems from the CoNLL-2011 shared task on the same dataset. Compared …
Mining Input Sanitization Patterns For Predicting Sql Injection And Cross Site Scripting Vulnerabilities, Lwin Khin Shar, Hee Beng Kuan Tan
Mining Input Sanitization Patterns For Predicting Sql Injection And Cross Site Scripting Vulnerabilities, Lwin Khin Shar, Hee Beng Kuan Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Static code attributes such as lines of code and cyclomatic complexity have been shown to be useful indicators of defects in software modules. As web applications adopt input sanitization routines to prevent web security risks, static code attributes that represent the characteristics of these routines may be useful for predicting web application vulnerabilities. In this paper, we classify various input sanitization methods into different types and propose a set of static code attributes that represent these types. Then we use data mining methods to predict SQL injection and cross site scripting vulnerabilities in web applications. Preliminary experiments show that our …

Analyzing Multi-Agent Systems With Probabilistic Model Checking Approach, Songzheng Song, Jianye Hao, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Ho-Fung Leung, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multi-agent systems, which are composed of autonomous agents, have been successfully employed as a modeling paradigm in many scenarios. However, it is challenging to guarantee the correctness of their behaviors due to the complex nature of the autonomous agents, especially when they have stochastic characteristics. In this work, we propose to apply probabilistic model checking to analyze multi-agent systems. A modeling language called PMA is defined to specify such kind of systems, and LTL property and logic of knowledge combined with probabilistic requirements are supported to analyze system behaviors. Initial evaluation indicates the effectiveness of our current progress; meanwhile some …

Review: Issei Buddhism In The Americas, Justin Kh Tse
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Issei Buddhism in the Americas makes a unique contribution both to Asian and Asian American studies. The authors premise Issei Buddhism in the Americas as a final stage in bukkyo tozen, the eastward-moving transmission of Buddhism from India traditionally thought to have ended in Japan. Their work is thus a contribution to Asian studies, both in terms of how Japan entered a global age and of extending the analysis of a Japanese religious form to the Americas. Following Eiichiro Azuma, the editors and their colleagues demonstrate that Issei Buddhists lived "between two empires," as their experiences of dislocation from Japan …

This paper proposes a robustification of the test statistic of Aït-Sahalia and Jacod (2009b) for the presence of market microstructure noise in high frequency data, based on the pre-averaging method of Jacod et al. (2010). We show that the robustified statistic restores the test's discriminating power between jumps and no jumps despite the presence of market microstructure noise in the data.

Enacting Clan Control In Complex It Projects: A Social Capital Perspective, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Wee-Kiat Lim, Christina Soh, Siew Kien Sia
CCX Research
The information technology project control literature has documented that clan control is often essential in complex multistakeholder projects for project success. However, instituting clan control in such conditions is challenging as people come to a project with diverse skills and backgrounds. There is often insufficient time for clan control to develop naturally. This paper investigates the question , "How can clan control be enacted in complex IT projects? " Recognizing social capital as a resource , we conceptualize a clan as a group with strong social capital (i.e., where its members have developed their structural, cognitive, and relational ties to …
Client Conservatism And Auditor-Client Contracting, Yoonseok Zang, Chee Yeow Lim, Mark Defond
Client Conservatism And Auditor-Client Contracting, Yoonseok Zang, Chee Yeow Lim, Mark Defond
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Auditors risk costly litigation and loss of reputation when they are associated with clients that engage in substandard financial reporting, and prior research argues that accounting conservatism reduces managements‟ tendency to misreport. Thus, we predict that client conservatism affects auditor-client contracting by reducing auditor litigation and reputation risk. Consistent with our predictions, we find that conservative audit clients are less likely to trigger auditor litigation or issue accounting restatements; and that auditors of conservative clients charge lower audit fees, issue fewer going concern opinions, and resign less frequently. Taken together, these findings are consistent with client accounting conservatism playing an …

Complexity Of The Soundness Problem Of Bounded Workflow Nets, Guan Jun Liu, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong
Complexity Of The Soundness Problem Of Bounded Workflow Nets, Guan Jun Liu, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Classical workflow nets (WF-nets) are an important class of Petri nets that are widely used to model and analyze workflow systems. Soundness is a crucial property that guarantees these systems are deadlock-free and bounded. Aalst et al. proved that the soundness problem is decidable, and proposed (but not proved) that the soundness problem is EXPSPACE-hard. In this paper, we show that the satisfiability problem of Boolean expression is polynomial time reducible to the liveness problem of bounded WF-nets, and soundness and liveness are equivalent for bounded WF-nets. As a result, the soundness problem of bounded WF-nets is co-NP-hard.Workflow nets with …
Active Refinement Of Clone Anomaly Reports, Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Aditya Budi
Active Refinement Of Clone Anomaly Reports, Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Aditya Budi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software clones have been widely studied in the recent literature and shown useful for finding bugs because inconsistent changes among clones in a clone group may indicate potential bugs. However, many inconsistent clone groups are not real bugs (true positives). The excessive number of false positives could easily impede broad adoption of clone-based bug detection approaches. In this work, we aim to improve the usability of clone-based bug detection tools by increasing the rate of true positives found when a developer analyzes anomaly reports. Our idea is to control the number of anomaly reports a user can see at a …

A New Framework For Privacy Of Rfid Path Authentication, Shaoying Cai, Robert H. Deng, Yingjiu Li, Yunlei Zhao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
RFID-based path authentication enables supply chain managers to verify the exact path that a tag has taken. In this paper, we introduce a new oracle Move that models a tag's movement along a designed or an arbitrary path in a supply chain. With this oracle, we refine the existing security and privacy notions for RFID-based path authentication. In addition, we propose a new privacy notion, called path privacy, for RFID-based path authentication. Our privacy notion captures the privacy of both tag identity and path information in a single game. Compared to existing two-game based privacy notions, it is more rigorous, …
Stochastic Dominance In Stochastic Dcops For Risk-Sensitive Applications, Nguyen Duc Thien, William Yeoh, Hoong Chuin Lau
Stochastic Dominance In Stochastic Dcops For Risk-Sensitive Applications, Nguyen Duc Thien, William Yeoh, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Distributed constraint optimization problems (DCOPs) are well-suited for modeling multi-agent coordination problems where the primary interactions are between local subsets of agents. However, one limitation of DCOPs is the assumption that the constraint rewards are without uncertainty. Researchers have thus extended DCOPs to Stochastic DCOPs (SDCOPs), where rewards are sampled from known probability distribution reward functions, and introduced algorithms to find solutions with the largest expected reward. Unfortunately, such a solution might be very risky, that is, very likely to result in a poor reward. Thus, in this paper, we make three contributions: (1) we propose a stricter objective for …
Nature Of Vix Jumps On Market Timing Of Hedge Funds, Yueh-Neng Lin, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh
Nature Of Vix Jumps On Market Timing Of Hedge Funds, Yueh-Neng Lin, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The study indicates that Brownian motion, finite and infinite activity jumps are present in the ultra-high frequency VIX data. The total quadratic variation can be split into a continuous component of 29% and a jump component of 71%. Jump activities on ultra-high frequency VIX data are found informative in ex-ante identifying subgroups of hedge funds that deliver significant outperformance. In the months that follow large jumps, strategies exposing to long volatility and extreme risk tend to deliver positive performance in extreme market environments. In the months that follow small jumps, possibly as a result of trading illiquidity, most fund strategies …
Traditional Tests For Implication Of Terms Prevail In Singapore Despite ‘Acceptance’ Of Belize Test: Sembcorp Marine Ltd V Ppl Holdings Pte Ltd, Yihan Goh
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
There is an ongoing legal debate concerning the test governing the implication of terms in fact, prompted in no small measure by Lord Hoffmann’s influential speech in Attorney General of Belize v Belize Telecom. In Belize, Lord Hoffmann famously said that the question for a court considering whether a term should be implied is ‘whether such a [term] would spell out in express words what the instrument, read against the relevant background, would reasonably be understood to mean’. This has generally been regarded by judges3 and academics4 as subsuming the implication of terms within the broader rubric of ‘interpretation’. The …

Li (Ritual/Rite) And Tian (Heaven/Nature) In The Xunzi: Does Confucian Li Need Metaphysics?, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Ritual (li) is central to Confucian ethics and political philosophy. Robert Neville believes that Chinese Philosophy has an important role to play in our times by bringing ritual theory to the analysis of global moral and political issues. In a recent work, Neville maintains that ritual ‘needs a contemporary metaphysical expression if its importance is to be seen.’ This paper examines Neville's claim through a detailed study of the ‘ethics of ritual’ in one of the early Confucian texts, the Xunzi. This text has sometimes been read as offering a form of naturalism in its discussions of ‘heaven (tian)’ as …

Repairing An Organization’S Image In Times Of Crises: What Strategies To Use When?, Augustine Pang, Benjamin Meng-Keng Ho, Nuraini Malik
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The image repair theory has been described as the “dominant paradigm for examining corporate communication in times of crises” (Dardis & Haigh, 2009, p. 101). While the theory, which posits five major strategies and 14 sub-strategies, has been applied extensively, a fundamental question remains: What strategies should be used when? Through meta-analysis of the image repair studies, we examine the persuasiveness/effectiveness in the use of different strategies. This study addresses the call by Haigh and Brubaker (2010) to conduct more studies to understand the use of strategies across different crisis types with a view to providing a template to equip …
The Dimensionality Of Political Space: Epistemological And Methodological Considerations, Kenneth Benoit, Michael Laver
The Dimensionality Of Political Space: Epistemological And Methodological Considerations, Kenneth Benoit, Michael Laver
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Spatial characterizations of agents' preferences lie at the heart of many theories of political competition. These give rise to explicitly dimensional interpretations. Parties define and differentiate themselves in terms of substantive policy issues, and the configuration of such issues that is required for a good description of political competition affects how we think substantively about the underlying political space in which parties compete. For this reason a great deal of activity in political science consists of estimating such configurations in particular real settings. We focus on three main issues in this article. First, we discuss the nature of political differences …

Sri Lanka's Informal Religious Economy: Evangelical Competitiveness And Buddhist Hegemony In Perspective, Orlando Woods
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Existing religious economy models maintain that as religious regulation increases, levels of interreligious competition decrease. But new understandings of the market dynamics of religious oligopolies necessitate new understandings of religious competitiveness. A relational model of competitiveness using the case of evangelical Christianity in Buddhist-majority Sri Lanka is proposed. In Sri Lanka the informal religious economy is defined by competitiveness among evangelical Christian groups and, although not recognized by the state, is closely regulated. The focus in this article is on the scalar determinations of evangelical competitiveness, patterns of secrecy and subterfuge, the formation of strategic extra-group networks that enable competitiveness, …

Space And The City: Gender Identities In The Seventeenth-Century Norwich, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Influenced by interdisciplinary studies and the ‘spatial turn’ in social history, this article explores the relationship between space and the construction of gender identity amongst the poor to middling sorts of seventeenth-century Norwich. To this end I have considered gendered interaction in different ‘types' of space: domestic, private space, ‘borderline’ space – such as the alehouse or threshold – and, finally, the public space of streets and markets. Each section explores the relevance of recent spatial historiography in the Norwich context, and evaluates whether men and women inhabited different ‘worlds' in the city, not only in terms of their physical …
