Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Surface drilling for mine rescue represents a critical technique in the emergency rescue system against mine disasters. To accurately assess the passability of large-diameter rescue wells during rescue operations, it is essential to build precise 3D models of the rescue wells for rapid reconstruction of rescue scenarios. Methods Based on the theory of multi-camera-based 3D model reconstruction, this study investigated the method of arranging four Intel D435i cameras within a large-diameter rescue well. Accordingly, a multi-camera-based 3D model reconstruction system for a large-diameter rescue well was established, involving the joint calibration of the camera array and the selection of …

Many employers screen job applicants with algorithms built by the same few algorithm vendors. We hypothesize that algorithmic monoculture leads to the same individuals and members of the same racial groups facing rejection. We acquire and analyze a novel dataset of 3 million applicants submitting 4 million applications where all the applications are screened by algorithms built by the same vendor. We find clear racial disparities in applicant outcomes. Of all applications submitted by Asian and Black applicants, 14.74% and 25.87% are submitted to positions that adversely impact Asian and Black applicants, respectively, according to U.S. employment discrimination standards. Individuals …

"Your Problem Is Not At All An Uncommon One": Visibility, Black Men, And Sexual Orientation In The Anti-Apartheid And Civil Rights Movements, Wren Addison Weddell
Dissertations and Theses
The South African Anti-Apartheid Movement and the American Civil Rights Movement are two of the most well-known examples of racial liberation movements, but there are few scholarly works that offer comparisons between the two. Furthermore, the experiences of people who fall outside the bounds of heteronormative society are often overlooked in historical research on both movements. Despite the dearth in research, there are several key factors that are revealed when comparing the lives of Black non-heterosexual men among the activists for both of these movements, including the role of the global community, unique local cultures, and how the state polices …

What’S Past Is Prologue: Prior Convictions As Evidence Of Dangerousness In State V. Romero, Alexander Guel-James
What’S Past Is Prologue: Prior Convictions As Evidence Of Dangerousness In State V. Romero, Alexander Guel-James
New Mexico Law Review
State v. Romero marked the first time the New Mexico Court of Appeals considered whether a New Mexico law disarming every person with a state felony conviction was unconstitutional under the Second Amendment. The court upheld the law, but only to the extent that it disarmed dangerous felons. The court found that the appellant was dangerous because he was previously convicted of dangerous crimes. This note questions whether prior convictions alone are sufficient to prove dangerousness. Criminal justice data and constitutional theory caution against dangerousness findings based on criminal history alone. Courts should determine dangerousness under the disarmament law using …

Challenges And Opportunities In Rural Education: The Case Of La Araucanía, Chile, Katerin Arias-Ortega, Viviana Villarroel
The Rural Educator
The article reports on the challenges that rural education has been facing in La Araucanía, Chile, from the perspective of Mapuche parents. The study’s methodology was qualitative and involved Mapuche families who sent their children to rural, single-teacher schools located in an Indigenous context. The findings indicate that Mapuche mothers perceive the education that their children receive in rural schools to be of lower academic quality. Furthermore, they acknowledge that rural education receives less economic support than education in urban settings, which creates a disadvantage for Indigenous and peasant children. This disparity limits their ability to acquire the same resources …

Research On Optimization Modeling Method For Eye Tracking In Solfeggio Cognitive Simulation, Kun Zhang, Jiajie Qian, Shuhong Ma, Zengxu Zhao, Yuchen Pan, Yaoqi Tang
Journal of System Simulation
To address the fixation offset problem caused by head movement in music solfeggio teaching simulation and the lack of system-level simulation validation in existing methods, this paper proposed a fixation accuracy optimization method integrating image semantic understanding, temporal trajectory modeling, and solfeggio cognitive simulation. With Vision Transformer as the core, after preprocessing via Mahalanobis distance, sliding window, and region of interest, position offset perception, offset residual regression, and dual-pathway fusion were introduced to achieve offset modeling and correction under unlabeled conditions. Simulation results indicate that the error of this method decreases by 43.9% compared with the original value error; removing …

Nozzle Erosion Reconstruction Model For Data Analysis In Rocket Engines And Correlation With Chamber Pressure, Ryan J. Thibaudeau, Stephen A. Whitmore
Nozzle Erosion Reconstruction Model For Data Analysis In Rocket Engines And Correlation With Chamber Pressure, Ryan J. Thibaudeau, Stephen A. Whitmore
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
Graphite nozzles remain the dominant choice for small hybrid and solid rocket motors operating on laboratory and university budgets, owing to their low cost, ease of machining, and rapid turnaround during iterative design campaigns. These same programs, however, must contend with the fact that graphite erodes through coupled thermochemical and mechanical mechanisms when exposed to the oxidizing species generated by high-energy propellant combustion, and the resulting throat-area growth fundamentally alters the time histories of chamber pressure, thrust, and delivered specific impulse. This paper presents a nozzle-erosion reconstruction model that extracts the time-resolved throat area from coupled thrust and chamber-pressure measurements …

The 1920s And The Distortion Of Democracy: The Fourteenth Census, The Fight Over Reapportionment, And Its Consequences, William L. Paine
Department of History
Following the 1920 decennial census the United States Congress, for the first and only time in its history, failed to pass a reapportionment bill to redistribute representation in the House of Representative in a timely manner. Congress would debate and delay reapportionment for nearly a decade before finally passing the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929, which provided for the next reapportionment after the 1930 census as well as for all future censuses. There were many factors that helped perpetuate the debate over reapportionment in the 1920s, some of which were unique to the decade and some of which weren’t. The …
A Cross-Dataset Vision Transformer Study For Brain Tumor Mri Image Classification, Sharon Kawira Mungania
A Cross-Dataset Vision Transformer Study For Brain Tumor Mri Image Classification, Sharon Kawira Mungania
Masters Theses
Brain tumor MRI classification is an important medical-imaging task because MRI scans contain complex anatomical patterns that can be time consuming to interpret manually. This study evaluates whether a pre-trained Vision Transformer can classify brain tumor MRI images consistently across datasets with different class structures. Three publicly available Kaggle datasets were used: Nickparvar, Br35H, and Figshare. Nickparvar and Figshare were treated as multi-class classification tasks, while Br35H was treated as a binary tumor/no-tumor task. Images were converted to three-channel format, resized to 384 × 384 pixels, normalized using ImageNet statistics, and augmented during training. The selected model was ViT-Base Patch …
Animal Ethics And The Lowest Common Denominator, John O. Adenitire
Animal Ethics And The Lowest Common Denominator, John O. Adenitire
Animal Sentience
This commentary assesses the pragmatic framework proposed in Jonathan Birch’s The Edge of Sentience (2024). Celebrating the book's exceptional clarity, scientific rigor, and profound real-world impact on UK legislation, I nevertheless have some questions about the method by which Birch arrives at his policy recommendations for animal protection. In seeking an overlapping consensus between deeply divergent ethical and credal viewpoints, the framework risks defaulting to a minimalist, lowest-common-denominator standard of protection for animals. Birch also risks drawing the standard even lower by including serious academic positions in animal ethics that deny moral status for animals altogether. A rights-based approach offers …
