Interprofessional teamwork is recognized as a major contributing factor to safe patient care and improved patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals' attitudes impact successful teamwork. A large, not-for-profit healthcare organization in the southwestern United States conducted a new employee orientation that included content on interprofessional teamwork, and collected quality improvement data that included responses to the TeamSTEPPS® Teamwork Attitudes Questionnaire (T-TAQ). This retrospective, non-experimental, before-after, comparative study analyzed this quality improvement data to determine if there was a significant impact of the interprofessional teamwork-focused orientation on individual team member's attitudes regarding teamwork as measured by the T-TAQ. According to the CDC, 17.8% of people in the United States are current smokers. 23.4% of Ohioans smoke cigarettes daily, which is significantly greater than the national average. In the clinical setting where the project took place, approximately one third of patients who came into the office stated they were active smokers. Review of evidence suggests that text message-based smoking cessation interventions are an effective means of smoking cessation. A priority for health care organizations is to ensure their electronic health record (EHR) systems are used safely and effectively. Alarm fatigue occurs when excessive alarms cause nurses to disregard alarms posing a significant patient safety threat. This quality improvement project utilized the plan-do-check-act approach to examine the impact of daily electrocardiographic electrode changes on the frequency of technical related cardiac monitor alarm events on two adult nursing units. All technical related cardiac monitor alarm events decreased during the intervention period; specifically, by 20.6% and 71.0% on the first and second nursing unit respectively.

This DNP capstone project provides evidence that adding a hands-on educational initiative regarding the use of capnography to a group of nurses who administer procedural sedation will promote the use of capnography. Multiple factors (e.g., a misperception of what constitutes violence and lack of administrative response following violent events) may precipitate a lack of compliance in hospital employees' reporting patient-to-staff violent incidents, as well as lead to poor staff perception of personal safety and support from hospital administration. Lack of recognition of the true incidence and underreporting of verbal violence, which often precedes physical violence, may contribute to a false sense of security within a healthcare facility.

Although there has been extensive research on factors contributing to moral distress, burnout, and turnover intentions in the nursing profession, there has been limited research on the relationship of conscience and ethical climate. Both the ethical climate theory and moral distress theory were utilized to guide the implementation of this study. A predictive correlational design was utilized to determine the relationship between the variables defined as perceptions of conscience, hospital ethical climate and stress of conscience. A purposive, non-probability-based sampling of 193 registered nurses throughout the state of Louisiana was surveyed using a web-based survey instrument.
