Approximate Calculations Of The Net Economic Impact Of Global Warming Mitigation Targets Under Heightened Damage Estimates, Patrick T. Brown, Harry Saunders Oct 2020

Approximate Calculations Of The Net Economic Impact Of Global Warming Mitigation Targets Under Heightened Damage Estimates, Patrick T. Brown, Harry Saunders

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Efforts to mitigate global warming are often justified through calculations of the economic damages that may occur absent mitigation. The earliest such damage estimates were speculative mathematical representations, but some more recent studies provide empirical estimates of damages on economic growth that accumulate over time and result in larger damages than those estimated previously. These heightened damage estimates have been used to suggest that limiting global warming this century to 1.5 °C avoids tens of trillions of 2010 US$ in damage to gross world product relative to limiting global warming to 2.0 °C. However, in order to estimate the net …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Quantifying variability in the ocean carbon sink remains problematic due to sparse observations and spatiotemporal variability in surface ocean pCO2. To address this challenge, we have updated and improved ECCO-Darwin, a global ocean biogeochemistry model that assimilates both physical and biogeochemical observations. The model consists of an adjoint-based ocean circulation estimate from the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) consortium and an ecosystem model developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Darwin Project. In addition to the data-constrained ECCO physics, a Green's function approach is used to optimize the biogeochemistry by adjusting initial conditions and six biogeochemical …

Lunn, Katie Katuzny, Sacha Finn, Laura Duncan, Jae Sevelius, Annesa Flentje, Matthew R. Capriotti, Micah E. Lubensky, Carolyn Hunt, Shannon Weber, Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, Juno Obedin-Maliver

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people—including members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities—are understudied and underrepresented in research. Current sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) questions do not sufficiently engage SGM people, and there is a critical gap in understanding how SOGI questions reduce inclusion and accurate empirical representation. We conducted a qualitative study to answer the question, “For SGM people, what are the major limitations with current SOGI questions?” Focus groups probed reactions to SOGI questions adapted from prior national surveys and clinical best practice guidelines. Questions were refined and presented in semi-structured cognitive interviews. Template …

Communication And Culture In International Business – Moving The Field Forward, Betina Szkudlarek, Joyce S. Osland, Luciara Nardon, Lena Zander

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The centrality of communication in international business (IB) is undeniable; yet our understanding of the phenomenon is partially constrained by a cross-cultural comparative focus as opposed to intercultural, process-oriented research designs that capture the dynamic nature of communicative interactions. Our brief review of studies at the intersection of culture and communication in the context of global work interactions reveals the dominant research trends that guided IB scholarship to date in this domain. We propose eight shifts in perspective to advance the field's theorizing and create avenues for further research.

Predictive Modeling For Occupational Safety Outcomes And Days Away From Work Analysis In Mining Operations, Anurag Yedla, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki, Ali Jannesari

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Mining is known to be one of the most hazardous occupations in the world. Many serious accidents have occurred worldwide over the years in mining. Although there have been efforts to create a safer work environment for miners, the number of accidents occurring at the mining sites is still significant. Machine learning techniques and predictive analytics are becoming one of the leading resources to create safer work environments in the manufacturing and construction industries. These techniques are leveraged to generate actionable insights to improve decision-making. A large amount of mining safety-related data are available, and machine learning algorithms can be …

Comparisons Of Upper Air Ozone At A Coastal And Urban Site And The Impacts Of Non-Controllable Ozone Sources, Chloe Gore, Sen Chiao Oct 2020

Comparisons Of Upper Air Ozone At A Coastal And Urban Site And The Impacts Of Non-Controllable Ozone Sources, Chloe Gore, Sen Chiao

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study quantified the impact of non-controllable and urban emission sources on the enhancement of ozone (O3) in the troposphere. These enhancements were investigated using data from simultaneous ozonesonde launches at Half Moon Bay (HMB), CA and San Jose (SJ), CA on eleven dates in July and August 2018. The urban O3 enhancement in the SJ vertical profile was derived by subtracting out HMB, which represents baseline O3, from the urban SJ profile. Within the planetary boundary layer (PBL), urban emissions had a large impact on SJ, as SJ O3 was 20–30 ppb higher than HMB for all dates. Above …

COVID-19 brought the public’s attention to the critical value of transportation and supply chain workers as lifelines to access food and other supplies. This report examines essential job skills required of the middle-skill workforce (workers with more than a high school degree, but less than a four-year college degree). Many of these middle-skill transportation and supply chain jobs are what the Federal Reserve Bank defines as “opportunity occupations” -- jobs that pay above median wages and can be accessible to those without a four-year college degree. This report lays out the complex landscape of selected technological disruptions of the supply …

Relevance Of Generational Cohorts In The Analysis Of Academic Library Usage, Laura D'Aveta, Thomas Sullivan, Tina Budzise-Weaver

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The literature surrounding student usage of academic libraries often relies upon generational cohort classifications when discussing patterns and preferences. We analyzed the most recent data available at [University] Libraries to determine whether any statistical significance could be attributed to these generational cohort classifications. We found that no significance could be attributed to generational cohorts that could not also be accounted for by other factors, bringing into question the importance of alleged generational differences when making decisions within academic library practice and policy.
