Understanding Child Noncompliance In The Early Care Setting, Melody Mann

McNair Research Journal SJSU

This study examines how teachers respond to children’s noncompliance in early care settings. This structured observational study will focus on the moment to moment interactions occurring within the preschool classroom between both the child and teacher. It is predicted that (1) teacher’s direct bids to children will promote greater instances of child compliance than indirect bids, and (2) teachers’ responsive language will promote greater instances of child compliance than restrictive language. The results of this study will contribute to existing knowledge about the nature of teacher child interactions in the early care settings.

Behavioral Economic Analysis Of Demand For Hypothetical Work Performance: A Partial Replication, Hifsa Khan Oct 2020

Behavioral Economic Analysis Of Demand For Hypothetical Work Performance: A Partial Replication, Hifsa Khan

McNair Research Journal SJSU

Operant behavioral economics is a field that analyzes human decision making by combining concepts of behavioral psychology and consumer demand theory. A relatively new and effective method of collecting data in behavioral economics is the hypothetical purchase task (HPT), which reveals consumers’ demand for a commodity as price increases by asking participants to respond to hypothetical situations rather than having them work for and consume the commodity. Henley, Reed, Kaplan, and Reed (2016) extended the HPT to create a novel task (the Hypothetical Work Task; HWT) to assess workers’ demand for payment under increasing conditions of work effort. Their study …

Post Postblack: Rethinking Contemporary Black Art In 2020 Art Culture, Brooke Finister

McNair Research Journal SJSU

For this study, I will be exploring the importance of advocacy in the art culture community. My research question is: Do we still need a postblack lens to look at black art and content? Historically, the black arts community’s perspective following the civil rights era and leading to the rise of the Black Arts Movement had been left out of exhibition spaces. I intend to evaluate the impact of arts foundations and organizations that contributed to the success of artists and curators within New York City from the late 1960s onward. In the 21st century we have much more inclusive …

Teach Us How: Love, Relationships, Resistance, Aarron Booker

McNair Research Journal SJSU

The purpose of this conceptual paper is to examine Black love in the historical, contemporary cultural, and political context. The goal of this paper is to illustrate the importance of choosing love as a means of resistance and as a practice for teaching transdisciplinary praxis. Historically, scholarship conducted on Black love did not incorporate the multidimensionality that blackness spans. It placed a focus on the relationships between Black males and females through a sociocultural lens examining factors such as Black male viability, Black male scarcity, and the impact systemic structures have on Black males. This emphasis placed on the Black …

Enhancing The Role Of Academic Librarians In Conducting Scoping Reviews, Peter Kokol, Jernej Zavrsnik Dr, Marko Turcin, Helena Vošner Blažun

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Information exposing, in conjunction with technological innovations and the emergence of social media, altered the traditional roles of academic libraries and enabled librarians to become necessary partners in research. The role of academic librarians in conducting systematic reviews is well recognised, however, their role in conducting scoping reviews is not yet well established. Nevertheless, we propose that, in more and more frequent situations when it is not feasible to read and analyse all relevant literature to be scoped manually, librarians employ bibliometric analysis and mapping to visualise and chart literature content. Our study demonstrated that science landscapes induced automatically by …

The State Of Research In Veterans Studies: A Systematic Literature Review, Leonard Lira, Janani Chandrasekar

Faculty Publications

New areas of research on veterans are emerging as the field of veterans studies develops and grows. Yet gaps remain in interdisciplinary research efforts on veterans. The research available across disciplines is still too fragmented to coalesce into a full-fledged field of veteran studies, as other categorical, area, and identity fields of study have done so. By surveying research literature of multiple disciplines used in the curricula of higher education-level veteran study programs, this article presents a thematic and integrative review of the state of research contributing to the growing field of veterans studies. Discussion follows about research emerging from …

Manual For Thin Asphalt Overlays, Lerose Lane, R. Gary Hicks, Dingxin Cheng, Erik Updyke

Mineta Transportation Institute

This manual presents best practices on project selection, mix design, and construction to ensure a superior product when constructing thin asphalt overlays. Experience shows these treatments provide excellent performance when placed on pavements in fair to good condition using proper construction techniques. Though sometime referred to by other names, thin asphalt overlays have been widely used for pavement preservation throughout the world for over 50 years.

Limited infrastructure funding at the local, state, and federal levels has resulted in greater emphasis on the use of pavement preservation techniques to extend pavement life and reduce maintenance costs. Thin asphalt overlays are …

Impact Of Regular And Narrow Av-Exclusive Lanes On Manual Driver Behavior, Sahar Ghanipoor Machiani, Aryan Sohrabi, Arash Jahangiri

Mineta Transportation Institute

This study attempts to answer the question of how a narrow (9-ft) lane dedicated to Automated Vehicles (AVs) would affect the behavior of drivers in the adjacent lane to the right. To this end, a custom driving simulator environment was designed mimicking the Interstate 15 smart corridor in San Diego. A group of participants was assigned to drive next to the simulated 9-ft narrow lane while a control group was assigned to drive next to a regular 12-ft AV lane. Driver behavior was analyzed by measuring the mean lane position, mean speed, and mental effort (self-reported/subjective measure). In addition to …

Promoting Transit-Oriented Developments By Addressing Barriers Related To Land Use, Zoning, And Value Capture, Shishir Mathur, Aaron Gatdula

Mineta Transportation Institute

This study advances land use, transportation planning, and public finance research by identifying: a) the various land use, zoning, and value capture-related barriers to the construction of transit-oriented developments (TODs); and b) the major strategies that are commonly used or could be used to address these barriers. The value capture (VC) tools include joint development projects, tax increment financing, special assessments, lease/sale of land or air rights, and impact fees. The research finds that while a large proportion of jurisdictions across the US have TODs, land use, zoning, and VC-related barriers often impede their construction. Most transit agencies are not …

Construction Cost Estimation Using A Case-Based Reasoning Hybrid Genetic Algorithm Based On Local Search Method, Sangsun Jung, Jae Ho Pyeon, Hyun Soo Lee, Moonseo Park, Inseok Yoon, Juhee Rho Oct 2020

Construction Cost Estimation Using A Case-Based Reasoning Hybrid Genetic Algorithm Based On Local Search Method, Sangsun Jung, Jae Ho Pyeon, Hyun Soo Lee, Moonseo Park, Inseok Yoon, Juhee Rho

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Estimates of project costs in the early stages of a construction project have a significant impact on the operator's decision-making in essential matters, such as the site's decision or the construction period. However, it is not easy to carry out the initial stage with confidence, because information such as design books and specifications is not available. In previous studies, case-based reasoning (CBR) is used to estimate initial construction costs, and genetic algorithms are used to calculate the weight of the retrieve phase in CBR's process. However, it is difficult to draw a better solution than the current one, because existing …
