The Feasibility Of Using Compression To Increase Memory System Performance, Jenlong Wang, Russell W. Quong
The Feasibility Of Using Compression To Increase Memory System Performance, Jenlong Wang, Russell W. Quong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We investigate the feasibility of using instruction compression at some level in a multi-level memory hierarchy to increase memory system performance. For example, compressing at main memory means that main memory and the file system would contain compressed instructions, but upstream caches would see normal uncompressed instructions. Compression effectively increases the memory size and the block size reducing the miss rate at the expense of increased access latency due to decompression delays. We present a simple compression scheme using the most frequently used symbols and evaluate it with several other compression schemes. On a SPARC processor, our scheme obtained compression …

A Selective Committee Architecture For Time Series Prediction And Pattern Classification, Antonio G. Thome, Manoel F. Tenorio
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this report we describe a novel technique to generate a committee architecture for time series prediction. The algorithm, here named Selective Multiple Prediction Network, consists of three steps: a systematic partition of the input hyperspace, a selective training of many agents and a flexible combining strategy. Potencially uncorrelated agents are generated which improves the combination process. The proposed architecture is easily extended to the class of classification problems.
Visible Light And X-Ray Ray Tracing Of Generalized Cylinders, Jean Hsu, David M. Chelberg
Visible Light And X-Ray Ray Tracing Of Generalized Cylinders, Jean Hsu, David M. Chelberg
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A new algorithm for ray tracing generalized cylinders whose axis is an arbit:rary three dimensional space curve and whose cross-sectional contour can be varied accortding to a general sweeping rule is presented. The only restriction placed on the class of generalized cylinders that can be ray-traced is that the sweeping rule of the generalized cylinder must be invertible. This algorithm handles a broader class of generalized cylinders than ainy other reported ray tracer. It has been integrated into a general geometric modeling systenn that can render objects utilizing visible light as well as simulated X-rays. Generalized cylinders are often used …

New Methods Of Complete Camera Calibration, Chanchal Chatterjee, Vwani P. Roychowdhury
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this study, we present a complete camera calibration algorithm for the solution of all extrinsic and intrinsic param~etersf or both noncoplanar and coplanar distribution of object points. The complete algorithm consists of: (a) new methods of computing image center and scale factor parameters inclluding the coplanar case, (b) compllete lens distortion algorithms with general radial and first order tangential distortion models, and (c) computation of calibration parameters within necessary constraints such as orthonormality of the camera vectors. In addition, we demonstrate the effectiveness of higher order models and of higher iterations of the lens distortional gorithms. For accuate calibration, …
A Fuzzy Locally Sensitive Method For Cluster Analysis, Antonio G. Thome, Manoel F. Tenorio
A Fuzzy Locally Sensitive Method For Cluster Analysis, Antonio G. Thome, Manoel F. Tenorio
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Cluster analysis has been playing an important role in pattern recognition, image processing, and time series analysis. The majority of the existing clustering algorithms depend on initial parameters and assumptions about the underlying dat,a structure. In this paper a fuzzy method of mode separation is proposed. The method addresses the task of multi-modal partition through a sequence of locally sensitive searches guided by a stochastic gradient ascent procedure, and addresses the cluster validity problem through a global partition performance criterion. the algorithm is computational efficient and provided gocd results when tested with a number of simulated and real data sets.
On Efficient And Robust Methods Of Accurate Camera Calibration, Chanchal Chatterjee, Vwani P. Roychowdhury
On Efficient And Robust Methods Of Accurate Camera Calibration, Chanchal Chatterjee, Vwani P. Roychowdhury
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper we have presented a novel algorithm for camera calibration which is a significant improvement in mathematical simplicity, accuracy and computational efficiency in the solution of all extrinsic (external camera geometric) and intrinsic (internal camera geometric and camera optics) parameters. The method involves a direct transformation from the three dimensional (3D) object world to the two-dimensional (2D) image or sensor plane in terms of "homogeneous vector forms" for the solution of 12 extrinsic and a number of intrinsic parameters for both coplanar and non-coplanar distributions of object points. Furthermore, we have demonstrated a strong robust property of the …
