Transmission Scheduling Of Multichannel System For Communication Of Pre-Orchestrated Multimedia Information, Miae Woo, Arif Ghafoor
Transmission Scheduling Of Multichannel System For Communication Of Pre-Orchestrated Multimedia Information, Miae Woo, Arif Ghafoor
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Communication of multimetlia information over broadband networks dictates stringent QOS requirements. In this report, we propose a commnnication model for preorchestrated multimedia information. The proposed model, calletl XOCPN, specifies the performance parameters to handle mnltimedia media. effectively as well as provides resynchronization action to compensate anomalies thle to random delays introduced by the network. The model is used to determine the optimal number of channels needed to transmit the multimedia information. Subsequently, we consider a channel-deficient system having homogeneous channels (i.e. channels with identical characteristics) and prove that scheduling transmission of multimedia data in this system is an NP-hard problem. …

Performance Tradeoffs For Scheduling Pre-Orchestrated Multimedia Information Over Broadband Integrated Networks, Zafar Ali, Arif Ghafoor
Performance Tradeoffs For Scheduling Pre-Orchestrated Multimedia Information Over Broadband Integrated Networks, Zafar Ali, Arif Ghafoor
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this report we present a framework for evaluating performance of scheduling preorchestrated multimedia information over broadband integrated networks. We propose a set of Quality Of Presentation (QOP) parameters which quantify the quality of multimedia presentation from user's point of view. The communication of mulltimedia data in a networked environment can affect the desired QOP parameters due to jitter delays in the network. We evaluate trade-offs between QOP parameters and the system resources including channel utilization and buffering at the destination. These trade-offs can be used to develope an optimal transmission schedule for multimedia information.

This paper reports the diagnostic performance of observers in detecting abnormalities in computer generated mammogram-like images. A mathematical model of the human breast is defined in which breast tissues are simulated by spheres of different sizes and densities. Images ar'e generated by casting rays from a specified source, through the: model, and onto an image plane. Observer performance with two viewing modalities (stereo versus mono) is compared. In the stereo viewing mode, left and right images are presented to the observer (wearing liquid crystal shuttle glasses), such that the left eye sees the left image only and the right eye …
Modeling And Analysis Of Distribution Load Currents Produced By An Ad Justable Speed Drive Heat Pump, Stephen Paul Hoffman
Modeling And Analysis Of Distribution Load Currents Produced By An Ad Justable Speed Drive Heat Pump, Stephen Paul Hoffman
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A number of demand side management techniques have been proposed for the efficient use of electric power in the commercial and residential sector. The adjustable speed drive heat pump is a technology which has the prospect of decreasing power demands for space heating. This design has the advantage over conventional designs of higher efficiency and, potentially, reduction of peak power demand. Its main disadvantage is higher cost. Further, it has the disadvantage that it produces a load current with a substantial harmonic content. This load current waveform is injected into the distribution system and causes extra losses in the distribution …

Many years ago, I found that the students in EE 532, Computer Applications in Power System Engineering at Purdue University benefited by assembling a "term report". This report is written individually by the students, presented in a videotaped session, and assembled in a written report. For the Fall 1993 semester, the assigned subject was "Selected Topics in Electric Power Quality", and this is the compiled report written by (Chapter I) Soheil Alyasin (Chapter 11) Reid Sasaki (Chapter III) Atulya Risal (Chapter IV) Ling Chung (Chapter V) Jinyu Yang (Chapter VI) Brian Kwon (Chapter VII) Dan Hu. The topics state with …

Genetic Algorithms In Noisy Environments, T. W. Then, Edwin K. P. Chong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Genetic Algorithms (GA) have been widely used in the areas of searching, function optimization, and machine learning. In many of these applications, the effect of noise is a critical factor in the performance of the genetic algorithms. While it hals been shown in previous siiudies that genetic algorithms are still able to perform effectively in the presence of noise, the problem of locating the global optimal solution at the end of the search has never been effectively addressed. Furthermore, the best solution obtained by GA often does not coincicle with the optimal solution for the problem when noise is present. …

Rate Equations For The Phonon Peak In Resonant-Tunneling Structures, Roger Lake, Gerhard Klimeck, J. P. Anantram, Supriyo Datta
Birck and NCN Publications
The ratio of the phonon peak current to the main peak current in double-barrier resonant-tunneling structures is significantly enhanced by barrier asymmetry. Previously, using the Keldysh formalism, we derived analytical expressions, valid in the zero-temperature, high-bias regime, which explained this eftect. We now provide analytical expressions valid for finite temperature and bias obtained from (i) an intuitive derivation using a rate equation approach and (ii) a more general derivation using the Keldysh formalism. The results of the two difFerent approaches are shown to be essentially identical for the ex- perimental device parameters. The finite temperature expressions shed light on the …

Accelerated Learning Through A Dynamic Adaptation Of The Error Surface, Antonio G. Thome, Manoel F. Tenorio
Accelerated Learning Through A Dynamic Adaptation Of The Error Surface, Antonio G. Thome, Manoel F. Tenorio
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this report we describe a novel technique that accelerates learning pirocesses through a dynamic adaptation of the error surface. The algorithm, here name ARON (Adaptive region of Nonlinearity), implements a generalization of the basic McCulloch-Pitts type of neuron which gives to each unit the ability to automatically adapt its operational region according to the requirements of the problem. The changes on the error surface facilitates the progress of the 0ptimization criterion on its search for a minimum. ARON can be used in addition to and bring benefits to a large class of other optimization schemes.

Asap: A Transistor Sizing Tool For Speed, Area, And Power Optimization Of Static Cmos Circuits, Santanu Dutta, Sudip Nag, Kaushik Roy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This paper introduces an automated transistor sizing tool (ASAP) that incorporates accurate gatelevel functio~nalm odels and can be used for delay, area, and power optimization of CMOS combinational logic circuits in a VLSI design environment. ASAP considers the performailce improvement of VLSI CMOS circuits by optimally sizing the transistors on the first N critical paths. The global picture of the circuit is considered by taking into account the effects that the transi.stor size changes of one path have on the others. The optimization technique in our sizing tool is based on simulated annealing and couples accurate delay modeling with power …
