Linguistic Diversity From The K–12 Classroom To The Writing Center: Rethinking Expectations On Inclusive Grammar Instruction, Zoe Esterly, Hannah L.W Swoyer, Bridget A. Draxler Nov 2023

Linguistic Diversity From The K–12 Classroom To The Writing Center: Rethinking Expectations On Inclusive Grammar Instruction, Zoe Esterly, Hannah L.W Swoyer, Bridget A. Draxler

The Writing Center Journal

Language expresses our values and identities, but in educational spaces, multidialectical and multilingual students’ voices are often silenced in favor of Standard English (Lockett, 2019). As writing tutors and future language arts educators, we have developed a research-based inclusive grammar curriculum and classroom-based resources to expand the conversation surrounding linguistic inclusion. Guided by the principle that all students should be offered the opportunity to learn the conventions of Standard English, we advocate for inclusive teaching of Standard English grammar in K–12 classrooms and writing centers (Godley et al, 2015). Using previous research on multilingual students, linguistic inclusivity, and dialectical diversity, …

Calling In Antiracist Accomplices Beyond The Writing Center, Hillary Coenen Nov 2023

Calling In Antiracist Accomplices Beyond The Writing Center, Hillary Coenen

The Writing Center Journal

A reflective, ethnographic study of a grassroots, antiracist educational workshop (The Conversation Workshops, TCW) reveals that writing center (WC) pedagogy and feminist invitational rhetoric’s (FIR) influence on TCW enables participants to recognize their own and their partners’ expertise, meaningful experiences, valuable perspectives, and their need to be listened to, accounted for, and understood. In an invitational model, particularly one based on a one-with- one, interpersonal dynamic, participants are more like collaborators than audiences, an approach that can be applied in diverse educational settings, and which reflects the WC’s model of one-with- one pedagogy. This dynamic also reveals one of TCW’s …

Destigmatizing Working With Dyslexic Learners, Riley N. Dandurand Nov 2023

Destigmatizing Working With Dyslexic Learners, Riley N. Dandurand

The Writing Center Journal

In the field of writing center research there is a paucity of information regarding tutoring students with dyslexia. This comes as no surprise considering it is only in the last 50 years that there has been a conscious effort to include those who have exceptionalities in all areas of education. In addition to a lack of research and training there is another issue that arises with disclosing exceptionalities. Those studying dyslexia have found that students are hesitant to disclose their learning disability because of the stigma and feelings of differentiation from their peers (Brizee et al., 2012). The question then …

Embedded Vs. Drop-In Tutors In Developmental Writing Contexts: Course/Tutoring Perceptions And Impact On Student Writing Efficacy, Kendon Kurzer, Anna Hayden, Jennifer Nguyen Nov 2023

Embedded Vs. Drop-In Tutors In Developmental Writing Contexts: Course/Tutoring Perceptions And Impact On Student Writing Efficacy, Kendon Kurzer, Anna Hayden, Jennifer Nguyen

The Writing Center Journal

Many higher education institutions offer drop-in tutoring programs hosted by writing specialists to support struggling students while others may also/alternatively embed tutors directly into courses. In this quasi-experimental study, we compared survey results from 100 students in basic/developmental courses that featured embedded peer tutors with 78 students who experienced tutoring via a walk-in writing center. Variables explored included writing efficacy and course/tutor perception survey items. While students generally found both embedded and walk-in tutoring to be helpful, the ratings for embedding tutoring tended to be statistically stronger for most variables we investigated, suggesting that students responded more positively to embedded …

The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans Nov 2023

The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans

Navigating Careers in Higher Education Series

The Challenges of Minoritized Contingent Faculty in Higher Education offers a probing and unvarnished look at the employment challenges of these faculty members in four-year institutions. With dramatic shifts in the faculty workforce and nearly three-quarters of instructional positions in United States institutions now off the tenure track, contingent faculty have become the essential, frontline workers of higher education. Remarkably little research attention has focused on the experiences of minoritized contingent faculty in this new academic underclass. Based on in-depth interviews coupled with extensive research, the book highlights the double marginalization that can occur due to secondary employment status in …

Co-Limitation Of Resources Reveals Adaptations Of A Tropical Tree To Heterogeneous Environments Along An Elevational Cline, Indira Paudel, Kyle M.E. Rose, Simon M. Landhausser, Douglass F. Jacobs

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Introduction: Plant species often exhibit significant variation in functional traits in populations along elevational gradients to cope with varying stress conditions. While plant development has been assumed to be most limited by a single resource, growing evidence suggests the potential for interactions of co-limiting resources to impact plant performance. Here, we aimed to determine how light, nitrogen, and water availability influence the growth and physiology of different populations of koa (Acacia koa), a tree species of concern that occurs across a large elevational gradient in tropical Hawaii, United States.

Methods: Populations from three seed sources [low (L), mid (M), and …

Comparative Evaluation Of Investigation Methods For Estimating The Load-Dependent State Of Charge And End Of Discharge Of A Multirotor Uav Battery, Hanna Dibbern, Morten Roßberg, Claudia Werner Nov 2023

Comparative Evaluation Of Investigation Methods For Estimating The Load-Dependent State Of Charge And End Of Discharge Of A Multirotor Uav Battery, Hanna Dibbern, Morten Roßberg, Claudia Werner

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

As the scope of multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications increases, more attention is being paid to UAV energy requirements, which vary depending on the mission profile. To obtain accurate information about the UAV battery during flight, the idea of a digital twin including a battery state estimation model is promising. For battery state estimation, a Kalman filter combination is the preferred approach in the literature. Comparing different Kalman filters, the unscented Kalman filter has a more accurate estimation for nonlinear systems compared to the extended Kalman filter. In the application of UAV flight with load-dependent flight missions, the comparison …

Acoustical Properties Of Anisotropic Spinodoid Structures, Yutong Xue, Brittany Wojciechowski, Bhisham Sharma, J Stuart Bolton Nov 2023

Acoustical Properties Of Anisotropic Spinodoid Structures, Yutong Xue, Brittany Wojciechowski, Bhisham Sharma, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Spinodoid structures, also called spinodoid metamaterials, are non-periodic cellular structures that mimic the spinodal topologies that are observed during diffusion-driven phase separation processes. Spinodoid structures are computationally efficient to model and they can be fabricated using additive techniques; as a result, they offer an attractive way to design multifunctional structures that can simultaneously provide mechanical stiffness and noise reduction performance. In recent work, the normal incidence sound absorption behavior of four distinct spinodoid topologies was studied: isotropic, cubic, columnar, and lamellar. The isotropic and cubic topologies are essentially isotropic in terms of acoustical behavior, and they can be successfully modeled …

Experimental Study Of Granular Activated Carbon Stacks’ Level- And Time-Dependent Behavior, Guochenhao Song, Zhuang Mo, Tongyang Shi, J Stuart Bolton Nov 2023

Experimental Study Of Granular Activated Carbon Stacks’ Level- And Time-Dependent Behavior, Guochenhao Song, Zhuang Mo, Tongyang Shi, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Granular materials, such as activated carbon, have shown advantages in absorbing low-frequency sounds, but they also exhibit significant nonlinearities. In this article, three unique types of granular particle stacks' acoustical behavior are described and experimentally analyzed. First, when measuring the sound absorption spectra of particle stacks with varying depths and sample holder sizes, it was found that the frictional interaction with the tube circumferential wall can significantly affect the measurements, and a 1-D plane-wave model is only valid when the sample is thin. Secondly, when granular samples were tested with increasing excitation levels, the results indicated a decreased modulus and …

Acoustic Modeling Of Granular Material And Its Combination With A Flexible Perforated Membrane, Zhuang Mo, Guochenhao Song, Tongyang Shi, J. Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Porous granular materials such as activated carbon have been found helpful in sound absorption at low frequencies, and enlarging the apparent volume of loudspeaker cabinet. Such findings have encouraged studies of modeling technique to predict their response to an acoustic input. When tested in an impedance tube, the finite space of the sample holder and the elasticity of the granule stack can lead to features that are not predicted by rigid acoustic models, like sound absorption peaks caused by radial modes, for example. In the presented work, a finite difference (FD) scheme is built based on Biot theory to account …

Skeletal muscle fibers regulate surrounding endothelial cells (EC) via secretion of numerous angiogenic factors, including extracellular vesicles (SkM-EV). Muscle fibers are broadly classified as oxidative (OXI) or glycolytic (GLY) depending on their metabolic characteristics. OXI fibers secrete more pro-angiogenic factors and have greater capillary densities than GLY fibers. OXI muscle secretes more EV than GLY, however it is unknown whether muscle metabolic characteristics regulate EV contents and signaling potential. EVs were isolated from primarily oxidative or glycolytic muscle tissue from mice. MicroRNA (miR) contents were determined and endothelial cells were treated with OXI- and GLY-EV to investigate angiogenic signaling potential. …

Facilitating Uav Application For Cav Deployment, Shuya Zong, Yujie Li, Sikai Chen, Shaoshuai Mou, Samuel Labi

Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Connectivity-equipped UAVs offer communication opportunities within CAV ecosystems. This study was motivated by challenges in UAV-based monitoring: (a) at intersections where road user trajectories could be irregular, leading to traffic conflicts or collisions, and (b) during inclement weather where video images are often corrupted by falling rain streaks thus impairing the integrity of the image. In response to these challenges, the study developed and demonstrated the efficacy of (a) an algorithm for UAVs to predict vehicle trajectories at intersections and (b) a 2-stage self-supervised algorithm for enhancing the quality of UAV-sourced images. Both parts of the study highlight the UAV …
