Organ-Specific Characteristics Govern The Relationship Between Histone Code Dynamics And Transcriptional Reprogramming During Nitrogen Response In Tomato, Russell Julian, Ryan M. Patrick, Ying Li
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Environmental stimuli trigger rapid transcriptional reprogramming of gene networks. These responses occur in the context of the local chromatin landscape, but the contribution of organ-specific dynamic chromatin modifications in responses to external signals remains largely unexplored. We treated tomato seedlings with a supply of nitrate and measured the genome-wide changes of four histone marks, the permissive marks H3K27ac, H3K4me3, and H3K36me3 and repressive mark H3K27me3, in shoots and roots separately, as well as H3K9me2 in shoots. Dynamic and organ-specific histone acetylation and methylation were observed at functionally relevant gene loci. Integration of transcriptomic and epigenomic datasets generated from the same …

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications
The prolific seed production and polyploidy of annual bluegrass allow for the rapid development of herbicide resistance. Ethofumesate-resistant annual bluegrass plants were identified in the 1990s in grass seed production in Oregon, but their prevalence and distribution are not well documented. Therefore a dose–response experiment was initiated to determine the potential level of ethofumesate resistance in seed production systems. Seeds from 55 annual bluegrass populations were obtained from three sources: seed production fields (31 populations), the seed cleaning process (6 populations), and seed testing lots prior to retail distribution (18 populations). Additionally, two populations, one with known ethofumesate resistance and …

Background
Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States (US), affecting approximately 27%, or 15.9 million adults 65 years of age and older. Diabetes is the most expensive chronic condition in the US and accounts for the second largest avoidable healthcare cost. Adherence to long-term medication treatment plans is crucial among patients with diabetes because it decreases risk of developing comorbid conditions and improves quality of life. Greater exposure to adverse social determinants of health (SDOH) over an individual's lifespan can result in worse health outcomes. Hence, it is important to obtain a better understanding of …

Center for Connected and Automated Transportation
To help mitigate road fatalities due to human error, transportation stakeholders are turning to advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicle (AV) development. However, the stakeholders continue to seek assurance of the safety performance of this new technology. This is often done using simulation testing of AV sensors and other platforms for simulation (microsimulation of AV movements, AV testing in a cab driving simulator, at AV test tracks, AV-dedicated road networks and in-service roads). Simulation is particularly important for the perception module of AV systems. Perception is a key module that typically uses light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensors and …

Unraveling The Enigma Of The Gentry: A Historiographical Exploration Of Late Imperial Chinese Society, Local Governance, And The Complex Role Of The Elite, Jaeyoon Kim
KAUPA Letters
This paper delves into the intricate dynamics of late imperial Chinese society and local governance, focusing on the enigmatic concept of the "gentry." The term "gentry" carries multifaceted connotations, applied to both individuals and families, with political, social, or economic significance depending on the context. Controversy surrounds the role of the gentry in Chinese local society, ranging from praise as influential figures to criticism as targets in anti-feudal movements. Nevertheless, it is widely accepted that the gentry constituted a pivotal social group in Chinese society, standing above the commoners. To understand their influence, it is crucial to examine their institutional …

Background Drug–drug interactions (DDIs) are common and can result in patient harm. Electronic health records warn clinicians about DDIs via alerts, but the clinical decision support they provide is inadequate. Little is known about clinicians’ real-world DDI decision-making process to inform more effective alerts.
Objective Apply cognitive task analysis techniques to determine informational cues used by clinicians to manage DDIs and identify opportunities to improve alerts.
Design Clinicians submitted incident forms involving DDIs, which were eligible for inclusion if there was potential for serious patient harm. For selected incidents, we met with the clinician for a 60 min interview. Each …

Characterizing Intervertebral Disc Strain Under Dynamic Loading Conditions Using Ultrasound Texture Analysis, Radhika Kulkarni
Characterizing Intervertebral Disc Strain Under Dynamic Loading Conditions Using Ultrasound Texture Analysis, Radhika Kulkarni
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Herniated discs in the spine are a significant patient burden, with potential links to lower back and leg discomfort and a considerable impact on daily life. These discs, located between spinal vertebrae, are comprised of the annulus fibrosus (AF) and the nucleus pulposus (NP). Herniations happen when the NP protrudes through a full-thickness annular tear, possibly compressing spinal nerves. The mechanical factors underlying herniated discs are poorly understood, necessitating research into these mechanisms and accessible diagnostic techniques. Our study employs high-resolution ultrasound and texture correlation to quantify strain patterns in intervertebral discs during dynamic loading.

Introduction:
Opioid overdose deaths continue to climb in the United States. Administering naloxone to an overdose victim can save their life, but rapid access to naloxone remains a barrier. Delivering naloxone to a bystander using a drone has potential to increase naloxone availability but there are still many uncertainties about this mode of delivery. Can an untrained bystander to an opioid overdose successfully administer drone delivered naloxone after viewing video instructions on the drone and how long does it take?
Methods:
This mixed-methods observational study, conducted in a controlled outdoor environment, simulated an opioid overdose using a mannequin (overdose victim) …

Hermetic storage systems are used around the world to reduce stored product losses. Scavenging residual oxygen in hermetic containers can further enhance their effectiveness in minimizing stored commodity losses. Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of germinating seeds of soybeans, rice, cowpeas, and corn in scavenging oxygen. There were six germination stages: seeds soaked for 24 h and allowed to grow for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 days (T1 to T6). Oxygen consumption was monitored for 30 h. Root length, the weight of mobilized seed reserve, and visual fungal growth were also assessed. The results showed that …

Closing The Gap: Leveraging Aes-Ni To Balance Adversarial Advantage And Honest User Performance In Argon2i, Nicholas Harrell, Nathaniel Krakauer
CERIAS Technical Reports
The challenge of providing data privacy and integrity while maintaining efficient performance for honest users is a persistent concern in cryptography. Attackers exploit advances in parallel hardware and custom circuit hardware to gain an advantage over regular users. One such method is the use of Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) to optimize key derivation function (KDF) algorithms, giving adversaries a significant advantage in password guessing and recovery attacks. Other examples include using graphical processing units (GPUs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). We propose a focused approach to close the gap between adversarial advantage and honest user performance by leveraging the …

With recent advances in wide-area measurement systems (WAMS), wide-area damping controllers (WADCs) based on remote signals can effectively damp inter-area oscillations. However, these signals are inherently subjected to communication time-delay which may adversely affect the damping of inter area oscillations. The purpose of this paper is to present a optimization-based method for designing a WADC for a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to improve the damping of inter-area oscillations by considering the time delays of remote control signals. For this aim, the control gain value of the WADC, shifting of the critical modes to a desirable area, and the maximum …
Evolution Of Bose-Einstein Condensate Systems Beyond The Gross-Pitaevskii Equation, Yuli Lyanda-Geller
Evolution Of Bose-Einstein Condensate Systems Beyond The Gross-Pitaevskii Equation, Yuli Lyanda-Geller
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
While many phenomena in cold atoms and other Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) systems are often described using the mean-field approaches, understanding the kinetics of BECs requires the inclusion of particle scattering via the collision integral of the quantum Boltzmann equation. A rigorous approach for many problems in the dynamics of the BEC, such as the nucleation of the condensate or the decay of the persistent current, requires, in the presence of factors making a symmetry breaking possible, considering collisions with thermal atoms via the collision integral. These collisions permit the emergence of vorticity or other signatures of long-range order in the …

In agricultural weed management, herbicides are indispensable, yet innovation in their modes of action (MOA)—the general mechanisms affecting plant processes—has slowed. A finer classification within MOA is the site of action (SOA), the specific biochemical pathway in plants targeted by herbicides. The primary objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficacy of hyperspectral imaging in the early detection of herbicide stress and to assess its potential in accelerating the herbicide development process by identifying unique herbicide sites of action (SOA). Employing a novel SOA classification method, eight herbicides with unique SOAs were examined via an automated, high-throughput imaging system …
The Role Of Parenting In Developmental Trajectories Of Risk For Adolescent Substance Use: A Bioecological Systems Cascade Model, Kristine Marceau
The Role Of Parenting In Developmental Trajectories Of Risk For Adolescent Substance Use: A Bioecological Systems Cascade Model, Kristine Marceau
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Parenting is a key influence and prevention target for adolescent substance use, and changes dramatically in form and function during adolescence. This theoretical synthesis reviews evidence of associations of substance use-specific parenting behaviors, dimensions, and styles with adolescent substance use, and integrates key developmental and family theories (e.g., bioecological, dynamical systems, family systems, developmental cascades) and methodological-conceptual advances to illustrate the complex role that parenting plays for the development of adolescent substance use in combination with child and contextual influences. The resulting bioecological systems cascade model centers the dynamic co-development of parenting and child influences in developmental cascades that lead …

Keynote: Butting Heads And The Agency To Yield: Maverick Considerations In The Writing Center, Rebecca Hallman Martini
The Writing Center Journal
Despite their history of marginalization, writing centers need to be spaces where consultants, writers, and administrators act with agency. This requires both knowing when and how to act, as well as deciding when to yield. In challenging policies of seeming neutrality, I argue in this manuscript that writing center practitioners can center the needs and knowledge of consultants and writers alike. Finally, I call for more research about writer experiences with writing centers, which can (and should) meaningfully shape our administrative practices.

Keynote: Notions Of Writing Center Community And Some Challenges To Them, Carol Severino
The Writing Center Journal
It is crucial for writing center professionals who discuss community to ask ourselves what we mean by the term as applied to writing centers. In this keynote, I explore various notions of community that are influenced by writing center growth, expansion, and complexity, especially in relation to Iowa’s writing center. After relating a personal story about our new tutors’ traditional notion of community and an account of our own center’s expansion and growing complexity over the decades, which challenges their traditional notion, I discuss other obstacles to community, bringing in the critiques of writing center scholars. Finally, I synthesize what …
